Hey, I know there are a good amount of Australians on this site, and I have a question for you all. Do you guys eat kangaroo? If so, what does it taste like? If not, why not? Do you just not like the taste or is it considered immoral or something to eat your country's mascot? I am completely serious about this. I'm not trying to troll or anything.

The thread seems kind of "Trollish", even if it isn't your intention.

But I'm more curious about if they eat dingos. The dingos eat their babies have I heard (Seinfeld) they should eat them back.

I'm not Australian, but I was about to ask where the hell you heard that... then I did a google search.

Go figure. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_meat]
I'm sure there are a bunch of people that wouldn't be able to stomach it, but... yeah, this was unexpected.

Yeah, I know it seems insulting but I've been wondering this for a while. It seems logical for them to eat kangaroo, they're freaking everywhere down there. But then again they might have a different view on it. I really just don't know and I hope I haven't insulted anyone.

I'm Australian and yes, I do eat kangaroo. I've eaten kangaroo steaks, kangaroo sausages, kangaroo kebabs, in a stir fry - kangaroo all sorts of different ways. It's not immoral or anything like that. They're farmed here just like any other animal intended for eating. It's not like we go out shooting wild kangaroos for dinner. We buy it from the butcher just like any other meat.

And as for taste, um, it's nice? I dunno how to describe it exactly, but I do enjoy eating it.

Yep you can buy Kangaroo meat at most butchers or supermarkets in Australia. It's not considered even a little immoral (unless you're a vegetarian obviously). We eat Emu occasionaly too - the other animal on our coat of arms - and can get that at most butchers.

Kangaroo's not too popular really but some people just love it. I really don't eat it very often - it's a bit too rich, the same reason I don't eat venison.

I'm Australian. I do eat kangaroo. Here's why:

1. Extremely lean meat, very healthy
2. Tastes great
3. Kangaroos are not endangered, in fact they are in plague proportions in many parts of the country
4. Kangaroos don't produce CO2 gasses from their farts like cows do, so eating kangaroo is much better for the environment

But it's more healthier for the environment to eat the cow, because then there's one less farting animal to care about. Of course, you'd have to farm the cow to be able to kill it later... My plan seems flawed :(

Damn, I wish you guys would export it to where I live. That sounds awesome.

Well people out in rural towns have been known to eat kangaroo steaks. I on the other hand do not, but I'll tell you something my cat loves Roo meat. We buy it from the store and put it in his bowl and he eats so much.
I guess it's his nature, after all any cat in Australia is automatically drawn to eat the flesh of native fauna.

Read the Wikipedia article that I linked. As of 2007, it's exported to 55 other countries.

Short answer, yes we do. It is quite common and available in most, if not all, large-ish supermarkets.

As for taste. It is a lot like beef, except it has a very distinct lingering taste. It's quite good on burgers and you can get it on kebabs and in sausages, anything you can get as a beef product you can more than likely get as kangaroo.

It is a very common meat since they, as BonsaiK said, are a nuisance in many states here. They are often hunted, "culled", due to the threat they pose to farming and livestock environs.

It is possible you could get it. I know it's exported to Europe/Britain, so there's a fair chance it's exported to the US too.

EDIT: MGIBlaze beat me to it /facepalm

Yeah it is. Cattle is probably THE most harmful activity to the environment practiced today. Worse than cars, worse than oil mining, worst than everything. Cows give off massive amounts of methane gas (not c02, sorry made a mistake earlier) that contributes to greenhouse gas, the also require huge amounts of water and feed to rear. It's healthier to just NOT HAVE so many cows in the first place. On the other hand kangaroos have eco-friendly fart gas and take care of their own dietary needs until you're ready to go out bush with a 4WD and a shotgun.

Then we must kill all cows in the world! To arms!

Ahh, but is it... there was a Cow with your name on it somewhere that's still farting away as you've not had it slaughtered yet, as you're selfishly eating meat that has lower emissions!

Save the planet, eat more cows.

Same vein that vegetarians are destroying the planet too... killing plants, and not eating animals with emissions!

That said, if you're really in to saving the planet, eat more cars.

-note-

Piss take. Also, Cow produce Methane.
Yeah I messed up. Methane, not C02.

I see your point but your logic is back to front. The solution is to farm less cows in the first place.
