So valve are starting a Real Money Market for hats (details on the specifics aside) - It appears that there is a natural progression that games could be designed to share weapons as player owned assets.

Obviously, not all games would work and the games would need to be designed to take advantage of the service as well as needing a common mechanism to allow the weapons to operate in the same way in each game.

So you can purchase sets of generic compatible weapons (No gravity gun in a WW2 shooter or no BFG in God of War). A game would come with a set of weapons to allow you to enjoy the game, but you can purchase a pack of weapons which you can own and apply to the supported games.

I'm sure there are a bunch of downsides to this, balancing would be a problem, but if a game was designed around a specific API to allow these shared weapons, you could become really proficient with a weapon and take it with you.

I'm also aware that some publishers have built pay-for weapons/content into their game and it caused a bit of an outcry a while ago. That was just for one game though..

But if it was a weapon you owned, something you could bring to the game which altered your experience and made the game more personal?
