I prefer 1st person if the devs did the right thing and let me use my ears as well as my eyes to "see". I love games that let me predict what is about to happen using only sound.

3rd person view is a little better for certain games. Like say Ratchet and Clank, your controlling them both, so it wouldn't make any sense if you had Ratchets point of view.

I voted first because I hate cover based shooters... Third person was basically designed to work with cover, which is why I never liked it!!

3rd-person all the way. In 1st-person, you can only see in front of you and you have no peripherals. Yeah, you see too much in 3rd-person but I'd rather see too much than too little.
But it's so immersive!

Sorry, I get told every five minutes that playing a silent marine with arms coming out of his neck who can get stuck on an inch high obstacle is somehow more immersive. Since people don't seem to understand what "immersion" is, this has become an almost autonomic response, and I just have to tease.

I'm surprised TPS is leading the polls. Honestly, when I say I prefer them, I usually get treated like I said that Osama guy is a nice gentleman or something else as horrific and offensive.
1st-person can be more immersive as Bioshock was definitely helped by it's 1st-person perspective and I thought Mirror's Edge worked wonderfully as well, I really didn't think 1st-person platforming would work but I loved it.

If the gameplay is trying to be strategic, I really don't see the 1st-person perspective working very often. I'm playing the new Deus Ex right now and if it didn't have that 3rd-person cover system, it would be 100 fold harder to sneak about as it would be hard very hard to see the enemies without you yourself getting seen.

Also, there are more FPSs than TPSs because the 3rd-person camera is a lot harder to get down and you have to give the main character more animations as well. Aiming is also harder to get the feel right as well in a TPS. FPSs are just easier to make, which is why there are so many more of them.

My favorite 2 games of all time (Star Wars Battlefront I and II) are third person shooters. however, I much prefer first person shooters, because as a whole they have much better movement.

I enjoy both, but being required to choose one, I'll go with first.
To me a first person shooter is much more immersive as you are seeing the game through the protagonist's eyes. It also it better when I want a more "realistic" game.

Third person is also good, but to me it can make or break the game. Take Mass Effect, they did it perfectly. Take Resident Evil 5(the only one I've played), it's awful, the characters take up way too much of the screen.

To me third and first person have their place in some games, and have no place in other games.

Third person. Because first person shooters died for me after I heard of the release of modern warfare 3. Third person shooter any day! I mean look at saints row 2!

It doesn't matter as long as the game is good and likeable. Games which allow you to switch? Even better! *Hugs copy of Battlefront.

I woted for fps, for that is what i play most.
However i think some types of games are better in third person.
Example:
I loved MGS4:GotP in third person, but I when I decided to do a second time in first person wearing a suit (why not?) I found the first levels much harder and I did not enjoy it nearly as much.
B:BC2 however ia a type of game that does not need a third person view, and would be worse with it.
I think it all has to do with the player's interaction with the npcs and areas.
After all who could not agree that stealth is best when you can see yourself?

I voted for first person , i hate 3rd person shooters with a passion especially if it is cover based game, with the exception of RE4 and ME 2. I like the feel of fps with the inverted vertical aim . 3rd person games control too akwardly for me personally , moving , aiming and shooting is a hassle , not that i can't do it , it just counter-intuitive for me i find.

How? How exactly are those two games more immersive because of FPP? No offense, but I've heard the generic platitudes, but I'm yet to hear any specific and concrete way in which they were benefited by the perspective.

First person all the way. 3rd person is clunky and puts your character in the way of the action! (who wants to stare at someone's back for the entire game?), first person is more immersive as you view the game as if you were living it rather than just watching someone else, and finally first person works much better with mouse and keyboard controls.

Mmm lets see... in real life you view the world in first person perspective....

Let me know if you need me to explain more.

it depends, some games feel better at either or

although in first person i get heavily annoyed while trying to juke around in fps's and i get caught on that rock that is 1 pixel higher on the z axis than everything else so i end up dying because i couldn't see it....(this happens much more often than it should)

plus i like the strategic value of seeing much much more than you can in first person, it allows me to jump/crawl/crouch knowing my head is truly under the cover, it isn't sticking out a few inches for easy pickings for the opposing sniper.

plus i kind of grew up playing mario and socom....so yeah, third person is embedded in my hardware.

although i am highly enjoying metro 2033 (which once again that same shit is happening where i catch on the most bullshit of things sticking out) and i think that it wouldn't be as immersive in third person for that specific game.

Where is the option of "depends"?

IMHO :

First person is better for immersion.
Third person is better for visibility and spacial awareness.

I dont really have a preference. Both work well, it really depends on what the game want us to see and feel.
^ what this person said :)....I prefer third person, I enjoy the freedom of being able to see more around my character and also see what my character looks like (clothing, animations etc). My first love will always be old school first person shooters (Doom, Quake) so I will always have a soft spot for them, but 90% of the time I would much rather have the third person view.

ME2, Resident Evil 4 and Uncharted are brilliant third person shooter games that are superior to the best FPS' I've played with exception of Metroid Prime 1, 3.

I prefer to actually play FPS even though the games aren't as good since there's a much better feeling of control.

My vote goes to FPS.

Both have merrits but i guess i personaly have always prefered third person, i make this choice simply that shooters are often quite hectic and a first person view while being potentialy more immersive is often more restrictive aswell, i can't count the number of times ive been hit by grenades in FPS games like battlefield simply because they land slightly out of your FOV, third person tends to give you a better awarness of your immidiate surrondings because you can basicly see them easier, a good example from my personaly gaming history would be starwars battlefront, that has the option for first and third person perspective and i always chose third.
