People die anyway? When did THIS happen?!

I'm always the last to know :(

Gun crime is exceedingly rare in the UK, because guns are illigal and difficult to get hold of for criminals. Whereas in the US, guns are legal, and gun crime is out of hand.

Nobody should have guns in my opinion. Not even the police.

Gun crime is lovely I like it lots and lots.
Good man!
Just remember: It...uh...something vaguely amusing with a lack of regard for human life or suffering!
Hahaha *witty retort*

I dunno. I kind of like the whole "may carry a firearm" thing.
Yeah, people die, but that's going to happen anyway. At least getting shot is a quick and easy way to go.
Wouldn't that depend on where you were shot? I'd imagine having a metal slug implanted in you in a non instantly lethal manner would be quite unpleasant.

Anyways, I'm in favour of cops being armed. Don't want to get shot? Don't break the law.

If they were unarmed how would they police things?
In the UK we only have 'armed police squads' that can only take fire-arms for jobs if they've had special training AND the current situation justifies their need. Your normal bobby on the beat has a truncheon and mace, that's it.
What do they do if someone starts firing a gun?
They contact HQ, and get armed officers dispatched, but not every station/town has an armed squad so it can take quite a long time for it to arrive. In the mean time the police would try cordon off an area from the public until help arrives.

Police in the UK aren't like US police, they're more about 'recording crime and catching the culprits later' rather than 'fighting crime and stopping it'. It's why we have CCTV everywhere.

To be fair tho, guns are VERY rare in the UK, most crime is knife related or alcohol related violence (fist fights), so stab proof vests and truncheons are enough for day to day violence.

[Edit: I agree it's ridiculous, which is why as soon as I can, I'm moving to the US.]

Yes, given strict regulations. The police here in the UK are too lax, and the government has ensured they never actually do any crime fighting, just paperwork. My solution is this. Send all the paperwork police out on patrol and actually do something useful to prevent crime. Then, employ a shitload of admin staff to handle the paperwork. Then we solve two problems at once - crime rates fall and unemployment falls. Simple.

OT, there have been too many instances where innocents have been killed by armed police, such as Ian Tomlinson in the G20 riots and Jean Charles-de-Menezes on a Tube platform in London (he was mistaken for a terror suspect and was killed when he ran after they tried to arrest him). On the other hand, there have also been plenty of times when suspects have killed police and when the police would have been more effective had they been armed. So my response is that there isn't a simple answer, but given the circumstances the police should all be armed under strict regulation and control.

Yes, they should.

Because guns are awesome.

No. More than half the New Zealand police force refused to go constantly armed. Many even threatened to quit the force if it became mandatory.

...Sorry, I had to :p

I dunno about you, but if I'm raping some dudes' wife while belting out "Singing in the Rain" (one web-cookie for reference,) I am not going to be stopped by anything less than bullets penetrating my person, or classical music. (I am now making it childishly easy to guess the reference.)
IF?

ok what about ou plastic police , who have no right to arrest anyone and dont carry weapons either, surely they are a wasts of time and clearly a way of saving our goverment more money by not training up real police
... I'd like some proof of CPOs getting more training than the actual police.

Anyway. No Policemen in the UK should not be armed. The met are thuggish enough as it is anyway.

Not 'armed' police in the UK sense - they were not carrying guns, just the usual truncheon n spray, with additional armour for their 'riot' role.

I've met uk armed police, and they were very professional and extremely scary (as they should be when they turn up at your frond door packing smgs and what looked like an M209...). However, if every cop was packing there's be the constant fear that they would make a mistake, and with lethal weapons there's not much margin for error.

Like, who? Handguns and semi-auto rifles are banned. Nobody has guns. Oh, i forgot, the criminals do. DUH! Way to go UK.
