Oh woe is the new generation that is conformed into being comfortable with oppression.

Police = Stormtrooper

Control = Fear

Fact of the matter is that the Police are there to serve you, not the other way around. You don't serve the Police and then let the government get away with more shit like the Patriot Act or start making every cop a fully armored assault troop.
This guy deserves a fucking medal for hitting the point dead on.

why the hell wouldn't they be? they're the bloody police.
In the UK, most Police officers don't walk around with guns. Armed police units are specialised, similar to the American SWAT units.

If they were unarmed how would they police things?
In the UK we only have 'armed police squads' that can only take fire-arms for jobs if they've had special training AND the current situation justifies their need. Your normal bobby on the beat has a truncheon and mace, that's it.
What do they do if someone starts firing a gun?
Gun crime is exceedingly rare in the UK, because guns are illigal and difficult to get hold of for criminals. Whereas in the US, guns are legal, and gun crime is out of hand.

Nobody should have guns in my opinion. Not even the police.
I dont know about that personally I love guns and hey if someone breaks in my house and wants to hurt me he better think again cause I wont hesitate to defend myself, which is basically the only reason I would need a gun. Oh and they are fun to shoot!

I think that all police officers should carry "less lethal" fire arms, like tasers or mace. I even saw this weapon used in riot control fires a pellet full of powder that works the same way as pepper spray, but with power comparable to a paintball gun.

depending on the location

in Oakland, CA. i think they need full body armor, fully automatic machine guns, and close air support.

in Barrow, AK i think they wouldnt need more than a taser.

You people do realize that the people in the USA that use guns illegally would still get them even if we made a death penalty for owning them. You can smuggle firearms from Mexico easily and taking away the mass populace's weapons would just give the criminals more sheep to fleece so to speak.

UK has it tough police wise, this is an age where we get told by the council to "Remove your St. George's flag from your window, because it's offensive to minorities".

Police in the UK treat everything with kid-gloves now. Not their fault, they "have" to. Political correctness (Tamals in London atm, police won't touch em, lord knows it'll be "racist"), and modern media* means they're extremely limited in their choices of action.

I really feel for the average bobby atm, in many respects, they're powerless. Bring back the days when a delinquent youth yelling abuse at a police officer, who then goes on to steal 3 people's phones at knife point would get a slapping. Saw a two PC's (one white, one asian, both female) taking an untold amount of verbal abuse from 4-5 male black youths, who practically followed em down the street continuing the abuse(reason PC's did nothing? probably scared of being called a racist), this was about a year ago, it has only gotten worse.

Bottom line, give UK police more rights to uphold peace, without fear of persecution for doing so.

*Camera phones, personal camcorders etc. wielded by the public can be used against the police, when shown out of context. e.g protester spits in PC's face, PC gives him a beating to the legs with truncheon, filming of beating, then distributed to the news desks, PC gets persecuted, and dismissed from police force, despite him being in the right.

Interesting, American Police work under the assumption of always having to be one level above and never at the same level.
Try that again buddy. Here I'll bold a KEY word for you.

I'll even define it;

or
?conjunction
1. (used to connect words, phrases, or clauses representing alternatives)

Should start putting cameras in their hats.

I hate guns, but I guess if criminals have guns, the police should be well-equipped enough to handle that.

Sure, getting rid of guns completely would solve a lot of problems, but....who wants that?

Think of all the future buddy-cop movies! They'd be ruined!

On top of that I actually have a degree on the topic of law enforcement and hey, nearly every single police force in the first world uses a continuum of force using the 'one level above' theory.
Um... okay? Yeah, you said "You have to be at the same level or one level above.." And I have never heard of a cop here in the US, that approaches a situation at "the same level". They don't go into fist fights with fists.. and they go into knife fights with guns. The whole "at the same level" thing is the part that seemed unique. I don't know why you felt compelled to supply the definition for OR in a condescending tone but have fun with that.

The police is suppose to be friendly to the people, not characters of dread and fear. If i wanted that then i would just move to North Korea.
When I call the cops to grab a shop lifter I don't want them to be friendly.

Agreed, if someone's mugging me, I don't want the police to be nice. I want them to shoot the idiot.

I think none lethal weapons like stun guns should be looked into again
UK Cops can't even use stun guns and tazers?
Im prity sure they cant
Only certain Officers in certain Boroughs in the UK have the correct "training" to use them.
Whereas Airport cops get guns anyway,
I think they should all be armed, be it with stun guns or otherwise.
