Ok so, ever heard of a rating company (EG, PEGI, ERSB, etc) that has been putting pressure on a game developer because they consider a game to be "too inappropriate" somehow to be released?

I've been hearing that more and more as new idea's for games are being announced and I'm starting to wonder if this should be allowed? I mean no one cracked down on the works of Shakespeare or H.P Lovecraft, and for a good reason.

No one told Picaso or Van Gogh that they couldn't show their paintings,
I could go on and on with examples.

Bottom of the line, if a development team works on a game, should they have to cut out parts to appease the raters?

(my personal opinion, no, if a game is overly violent, gory or contains sexual scenes, then there are ways of pointing that out to a customer before its paid for. If a game contains things that you may be offended by, then no one is forcing you to play it, don't ruin it for everyone else)

Distributors have the power to not sell or to sell, that's where the filter comes in. Once they started they would keep pushing further and further in, banning more games they just don't find appropriate. Truly horrific games don't sell so they don't perpetuate.

If the game really IS too horrific for the distributors to considering releasing, than it wouldn't sell anyway.

Certain movies have been considered unsuitable for rating, although only a select few, in Britain.
Same applied to Manhunt 2.

Don't agree with it (feel it should be down to the retailers) but meh, could be worse, could live with the American movie ratings system.

No, nothing should be ban-able, it's against our first amendment of free speech and the right to self-expression. A lot of the responsibility should fall to the parents who are buying the games for their 12 and 13 yr old kids. That's actually why they came out with the ESRB in the first place.

NO!

If I want to play rapelay then I will damn well play it

I think bans and ratings ruin the chance for us to have some fun gaming experiences, developers shouldn't have to be worrying about that stuff they should be working on new and original ideas to blow our minds!!!
