let me start by saying that there are two things i cannot stand in a teacher: treating the students (IE me) like a child or the teacher does not seem to know the material they are teaching

so im taking a class on child development and while i enjoy the material i cannot stand the teacher. the teacher constantly contradicts herself as well as facts that i have learned in other classes such as biology, psychology, and human anatomy. at one point she completely botched the fundamental structure of DNA and its function

i recently found out that she doesnt even produce any of the work that we are assigned to do. the author of the text book ($280, the most expensive textbook i have ever bought and its only for this one class) designed both the power points she teaches from and the tests she hands out. during tests she tells the class not to trouble ourselves over certain problems because we never went over them (she doesnt mark them off). she seems to be constantly flustered, often reading the slides as they come up and skipping ones she herself doesnt understand

so needless to say i have become extremely angry after each class. im constantly worried one of her "facts" will somehow replace an actual fact i learned in some other class. i just hate the fact that i am being taught a subject by a person who doesnt seem to even go over their own material that is being presented and who doesnt seem to grasp the material herself

so my question is, should i drop the class? this is the last week to drop and while i know i can get an easy A in the class im worried this class might corrupt the valuable knowledge i have managed to retain from decent classes

EDIT: this class is completely optional, i took it to make my resume shine to employers but i found out that it wont (im trying to become a highschool math teacher and this class is for preschool through 3rd grade). right now i have my AS and am taking one more semester of classes at this community college before transferring to state (i was late on the transfer date) so im not seeing many benefits to staying in the class since i maintain a 4.0 already, so the A wont help any, and it doesnt help my resume so i dont see why i should stay

There are two ways to look at this. If you need the class (in terms of the information it presents) then I'd drop it. If you only need the class to fill a slot on your transcript, you might as well suffer through it. You paid for it after all, you might as well get something out of it.

Have you filed a complaint?
Yeah, I'd suggest doing this. Teacher's obviously not qualified.

If you're coming out of every class frustrated, then you should drop it. But whatever you do, make sure to file that complaint.

How... does one teacher's teaching style over ride your other teacher's teaching styles? If you can get the A, cowboy up and get the A. You're gifted in this subject, so the teacher isnt going to be detrimental to you. Dont go to class. Have someone clue you in and be there when you have to. Or sit in back and ignore her (thats whta I did last semester for psychology and it got me a B+).

If you fail in other subjects its a piss poor excuse to blame it on this teacher. Thats like saying you had a bad PE teacher in first grade, and today you cant learn from any other teacher.

Either A) Drop the class, or B) File a complaint with the district to get her either removed, replaced, or retrained.

Try transferring to another class on the same subject. If that option's not available, complain about her to the school. Your education is incredibly important, and there's no reason that you should have to put up with an incompetent teacher.

You definitely got to drop this class, if you know the information that's (SUPPOSED) to be presented is something important to you. If this is just a class, one that won't cause much consequence to you, go for that easy A.
But definitely, yes, file that complaint.

And when you're done, sell that book on campus (like on a board or something) for maybe around 200 or so. Whoever else needs it won't object considering that inflated price.

If you are doing really well in the class, an 'A' always looks good on your transcript. Just don't make the mistake of dropping the class after the drop deadline, no point in getting an 'F' because she is incompetent.
No matter what you choose, you should speak to the head of the department or ombudsperson and make an official complaint. They may not know what is really going on until someone takes the time to tell them.

Personally, I would rather be told by my students if I am too confusing than to continue with such a farce. As much as I love my students, if I can't teach so that they understand, then I'd rather be replaced.

Should you let someone teach you about something they themselves dont know about? No, of course not.

Drop the class and tell them precisely why... and try to be as insulting and hurtful as you can be to everyone and everything around you, that includes children and innanimate objects.

Bring your laptop into class and play a favorite game while she rambles on about bullshit.

Everytime she says something wrong, correct her and use your AltTab to get out of hte game, google, and prove she's wrong and then immediately go back to fragging.

That'd get lolsy.

Not to be patronizing or anything, but this is the kind of decision you need to learn to make for yourself. No one's knows more about this than you do, and if you're trying to justify being indecisive, you may as well flip a coin for all our opinion matters.

But, I'll give.

As they've said before, it depends on what you value in the class. I took a couple creative writing classes at my local community college. They were shit. I took one look at the teachers and came to the conclusion that not all philosophy majors are unemployed. Not to be judgmental; they just weren't my cup of tea and they knew it too. So I quit that class.

But I didn't need the credits. I'm not even in college yet. If you need to credits, you bite the bullet and take that class. Understand that not every teacher can be reasonable. As a side note, I'd like to point out that your school may not be very selective with their teachers, but textbook publishers certainly are. Sometimes, you just gotta read and teach yourself what the teacher didn't.

Either way though, I advocate telling her, maybe even anonymously if need be, why you dislike her class. Give her constructive criticism. She may not take it completely. She may not take it at all. But at least she will know that her students don't agree with her teaching.

Finally, I will leave you with this: If it is truly valuable knowledge, no hack is going to corrupt it.

Complain to someone in authority. The same thing happened during my A-level in Biology, she was a rubbish tutor, she'd always get things wrong and even then she made the lessons as boring as physically possible. We complained to the head of the science department and the college, and we ending up with a new tutor.

You didn?t even tell us why you took it in the first place. If you?re thinking of dropping it either isn?t the most important thing or you can pick it up again at another time.

I think you should stick it out though, you can take the learning into your own hands, be responsible for yourself. You can do that you know, you don?t need to rely on this ?teacher? nor does the time you have spent on it so far need to be a waste. You know what the syllabus is right; you have an idea of what the course requires of you? Then do it.

Also, yes putting in a complaint might be an idea. Someone should anyway, even if you don?t another person might need it more than you and doesn?t really have the option of quitting.

im not worried about not getting another A. this is a community college (going there for me GE and so i can save money), im pulling in all A's in all of my classes so it really wont effect my GPS, and i originally took this under the guise that it would help my resume (which it doesnt). sure, i could get through this but when the class is optional and providing more stress than it should i really dont see the point

i have gone to cal poly san luis obispo for a year with no problems and a year at this city college with no problems with my teachers but this one drives me crazy. i have never been this close to going off on a teacher (and i feel this way every single class) but i refrain from doing so out of respect for the school, the class, and for the teacher

the crappy thing is that since this a city college im going to you have to attend every class or you get docked points and you get kicked out if you miss too many

Talk to the head of her department. You could file a complaint to the dean but you won't get a suggestion or "fix" until after the drop deadline. Department heads at community colleges, from my experience, aren't that hard to get an appointment with. Just do that in one of the coming days and talk to them.

He will probably tell you whether your opinion is shared by others, what or if they are going to do anything about her, and whether you should just drop.

I don't know how your school works but mine there are two drop dates. One drop date where you get a full refund and one where you can drop the class get a W but still have to pay for the class. Why pay all that money just to have a W for a shitty teacher. This also goes back to the department head, maybe you can convince them to talk to the dean about giving you a full refund for that class.

A teacher can loose the respect of his/her students, and in that case you shouldn't bother anymore. Just skip the classes, and teach yourself. Then go to the tests a get A's, don't drop the class itself though, just don't waist anymore time on the teacher.
