Poll: Should I even bother?

My rather sturdy DS Lite has finally started taking its last breaths.
It started when the hinge mechanism on the right snapped, leaving the screen to fold entirely open, and skip the spot where it should stop.
Now it has a habit of flickering between the closed-lid standby mode and full power when shut, creating an irritating game-blackness-game-blackness-game-blackness effect.

Do I get a DSi or forget about a new DS in general?
I also have an R4, which I hope will be compatible with the DSi.

You can get the hinge repaired, it's a pretty common problem, but if you fancy picking up a new Lite get one ASAP, due to Nintendo stopping production on them early this year.

It's a Handheld..
Is it true Ninty stopped producing them? If so, I might be able to sell mine for a greater price then I thought.
A handheld console... I don't know what your point is. And I haven't heard anything about them stopping production.

Not quite yet, but they'll probably stop being sold in stores in the first half of this year. I guess they had to be phased out sooner or later.
(This is what I'm told at work anyway, maybe it's only for GAME though.)

I'd get a new one. From my point of view, I love my DS, I never leave the house without either my DS lite, or my gameboy color. Not keen on the DSi though, on the basis that it doesn't have a port for gameboy advance games, and why the hell would anyone want a camera?

Your R4 will NOT work with a DSi. Of course I should just not tell you that so you spend all that money only to discover that you just prevented yourself from pirating games, but then I figure you might end up just buying the Acecard 3 which does let you play ROMs on DSi.

Get a DSi LL. Just because it'd be funny.

Well, if you do get a new one, be sure to get a DS or DS Lite (I'd say)... the DSi has no backwards compatibility with the last gen of Nintendo handhelds and is more expensive, and all it has to show for itself is a built-in camera that would be embarassed by any decent modern-day cellphone.

I say you should upgrade your system, and this is the only deciding factor

It depends, do you still play GBA games?

Yes: get the DSlite
Yes but I still use the GBA/SP/Micro: get the DSi
No, but I might...: see above answers
No: get the DSi

don't bother with the DSbrick or the DSXL neither are worth it.

I don't know if the R4 works with the DSi though. safest bet would be to get a new lite...

Correct me if I'm wrong but is it not a handheld CONSOLE?

It astounds me how everyone who bitches about the DSi seems to be oblivious to any features beyond the camera, namely the DSi shop.

I quite liked the DS, and don't own a DSi. Could someone tell me something about them? Something good?

You're right, I did indeed not know that, thank you for that information! When I made my purchase I was mainly checking for backwards compatibility, so I must have skipped over the shop feature.
However, after reading up on the DSi shop and the games available it still wouldn't be a selling point for, but that ultimately comes down to personal preference, I suppose; the majority of the DSi shop games seem to be casual games, and I tend to use my DS on prolonged drives/travels, so I prefer cartridge games which will last me a good while. Still, I do acknowledge that the DSi shop IS a nice feature for folks who are into that kind of games.

I'd recommend getting either your current DS repaired or just getting another DS lite, the DSi doesn't have the game boy advance slot which severely limits the number of games you can play on it...plus the DS lite is cheaper.

That I can agree on. There at least seems to be like 1 good looking rpg in DSiWare, but apart from that..
Its mainly the potential it has... Rumours have even been spoken of relating to a virtual console for old handheld games. Possibly even GBA games, to make up for the lack of backwards compatibility.

But of course until that point its not a huge selling point unless you're into casual games.

At this point, depending on your "need" to carry a hand-held gaming system with you, I'd wait a year or so and see if big N does another hardware update. It would suck to get a DS or DSi just when they remove all incentive for publishers to make new software for it.
