A generic fighting game, or a truly original hilarious, incredibly well designed, first person puzzle platformer. Hmmmmm......decisions.......

Portal 2 was just amazing, every moment of it and the Co-op is an extension of the plot/different levels.

Mortal Kombat is the best in the series since 3/Ultimate, which would I choose? Portal 2. Is Mortal Kombat good? It's the best one since 3, then again considering every one after that was absolute garbage I don't think that says much but it IS good.

That's putting it lightly. Almost regardless of what non-valve game you put up against Portal 2 I'd expect Portal 2 to get far more votes by merit of being made by valve.

If you are going online, pick up MK so you can get your wins in early before everyone starts hacking it and makes it so you can't win from the cheaters.

(Now a bit of trolling)
If you want a game you will play once to get any challenge before you know all the solutions, listen to a boring, frankly annoying voice and unfunny-I mean "hilarious" memes to be, go ahead and be part of the problem and pick up Portal 2.

1) Find a coin.
2) Mark one side as Portal 2, one side MK.
3) Flip and see what side lands face up. Buy the game it picks for you.
4) ???
5) An initial loss, followed by PROFIT.

Simple.
See, if I have a problem that, while not important, I still have trouble deciding, this is what I do. However, I don't think you have a problem. Get Portal 2.
I do this, but I also have bad luck with the toss and it ends up choosing the option that will cost me the most money (just did this for picking out a new phone) So for me it would probably land on its side just to tell me I need both and that it hates me.

OT: personally I would say portal because well it's portal and i'm not much of a fighter fan, although MK will have alot more to do in it

I'm all for opinions and whatnot, but a little justification of that comment wouldn't go amiss. Also considering Mortal Kombat is pretty much just Mortal Kombat. Same thing it was the last however many times.
I can't justify HIS opinion. But I sure can justify my own distaste for Portal.

Portal is a game with an overwhelming gimmick. The portal gun. It was also painfully short by all standards and INCREDIBLY easy. I've solved harder puzzles when I was six.

It also lacked replay value. I played through the game once, don't see any point in playing the same puzzles again. The jokes that were hilarious the first time through are kind of boring through repetition. Both in the game and by everyone mindlessly quoting them.

D'aww, can someone not take negative opinions of their favorite games?
I'm not the biggest mortal kombat fan by any means. Haven't played any since 3 (in arcade. Love those days...) Erm. Anyways. Even I am of the opinion that you're either trolling (in which case, good job) or are completely ignoring any of the games redeeming traits. Replay value anyone? Also, calling a game an "STD" could quite easily be considered trolling.
Hell, I downright despise the other games in the series and yet I love this one. Did I mention that one of the stages is the most balls-rockingly awesome backdrop I've ever seen in a fighting game?

Anyway, judging by the poll, there's quite the saturation of Valve fanboys here.
Valve could come out with a game that has the premise that Hitler was a good guy and killing Jews was the right thing to do and the fanboys on this site would say it was a truly amazing game and really made them rethink and change their views on the Holocaust.

I don't get the portal 2 hype I never really enjoyed it or honestly any valve games.

I for a start am incredibly nerdy like really but the humour in it is so weird to the point I don't even get it I admit the cake is a lie was funny and a few Glados quotes however the rest just had me looking at the screen puzzingly. Portal to me seems like an artsy game which relies very heavily on a gimmick for gameplay and as others have said the game has no replayability. If I see portal 2 for like £10 on 360 I'll grab it just to see if it rubs right however I doubt it. I have no quorums against portal fans but when I see it featured and covered CONSTANTLY it just irritates me and makes my dark side appear.

Otherside Mortal Kombat looked amazing played on the demon for 5 minutes had a blast and also a crap load of extras which gives loads of replay ability. Did you ever play deception that game was awesome

For me, I'd have to say Portal 2, but this is from my own experience and yours is 100% likely to be different.

But in case you're not here for a recommendation and instead are investigating reasons why people like one game over another, here's the rundown. I don't like fighting games: it could be said that I despise fighting games. I wasn't old enough at the time to enjoy the early-90's fighter craze, most of my friends growing up would rather play Halo than Soul Calibur, and whenever I've tried to pick up one I have SUCKED, HORRIBLY at them.

I get why people enjoy them, but I can also acknowledge that I am not one of those people. The new Mortal Kombat is supposed to be a lot like the old ones, and it's all the better for it, but the problem for me is that I didn't like the old Mortal Kombats either.

Portal is a different story. I love puzzle games, and Portal is no exception. I've logged god-knows-how-many playthroughs of Portal 1, and just recently finished my first playthrough of Portal 2 and liked it, a lot. Took me 12 hours to beat it, and I have emerged fully willing to go back and replay it for god-knows-how-many times. Even without forcing one of my friends to play co-op with me, I would say without a doubt that it was worth the full price.

TLDR version: I don't much care for Mortal Kombat, but I love Portal. One vote for Portal.

If you like feeling smart and laughing at the best comedy in games ever: Portal 2.

If you like gore: MK.

I am a genius. :3

I bought both.

Now, both are awesome, but it depends what you want. I'm purposely going slow with Portal because if I complete it mega quickly I'll feel like I've wasted my money no matter how much fun I had whilst playing it....

Mortal Kombat is awesome too, although I tend to get bored of fighting games after a while. Saying that, there is a lot to do, what with the ladder (arcade) matches, tag teams, versus, "Test Your..." matches, story mode and the challenge tower, as well as a lot of unlockables.

Both are brilliant games - it does just depend on what you want out of it. Or get both.

Nah, Mortal Kombat could be for the nostalgia reasons seeing as it is basically returning to its roots with the latest instalment, you genuinly enjoy fighting games, you like gore, you (Like me) love the variation in characters :) I could go on.

But if you want Portal 2 then you could be jumping on the bandwagon, enjoy puzzles, enjoyed the last one, like dark humour, enjoy seeing robots as potatoes or like the portal gun gimmick.

I sir/madam, am a genius. Or get both cos why the fuck not?! >:D

Either way, who really cares, seeing as it's just a choice between two games? I mean, does it really need this much fanboyism? (Not directly aimed at who I'm quoting.)

Don't forget that a competently made fighting game will always be superior to an insultingly simplistic puzzle game.
So this one was competently made?
That's a relief.

I'll agree that the puzzles in the Portals aren't the least bit challenging (mind you, I haven't gotten to the end of P2 yet) but I find something that is so unusual (when you compare it to every other example of the overused FPS motif) more compelling than a re-make of a fighting game I played to death in the 90s.

the first Portal was crap and the Mortal Kombat demo seemed promising so I would go with that.

Get Portal 2, unless you are REALLY into fighting games. I mean like arcade-pad-memorize-all-the-combos into fighting games, because if you aren't then it is going to get really stale really fast.

Portal 2 is clever, addicting, fun, fast-paced, and you know valve is going to be adding free updates and addons if you get it for PC, Mac, or PS3.

Portal 2. Because I'm an arty snob who thinks that dark humor and puzzles are more engaging then pressing a button to rip someone's head off.
Dark humor and puzzles are awesome...and so is ripping someone's head off. You are doing a terrible job helping this person pick a game.

Portal is for artsy snobs now? I also thought it was for anyone who likes having fun.

OT: Refer to my previous response. Mortal Kombat if you're really into fighters. Portal 2 if you aren't.
