Where minecraft is a sandbox with no real adventure except the one you make, Terraria focuses more on adventuring and fighting monsters and bosses, collecting treasures, etc

Get minecraft for building
Get terraria for adventuring

It starts of as a worse rip of minecraft but becomes a combat focused version later on. If you want minecraft with intense combat but less creative building get it... the combat is epic fun.

Minecraft has a focus on building, exploring and - to a certain extent - surviving.

Terraria is filled with boss enemies, dungeon crawling, epic loot, legendary items and other crazy shit. Personally, I love it. If that sounds good to you, I highly recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, they're both brilliant games, but there's just not as much of a comparison as everyone is saying.

Someone posted a similar thread earlier this week and the posts within convinced me to give it a whirl. I was not disappointed.

Yes, oh god yes, I got the game and have been having so so so so so........ much fun with it, I love it more than minecraft, which I thought was impossible, but terraria just has so much that you can do, also it has a gun that is half shark half gun, how could you say no?

Oh and once you get past the pick up blocks you destroy and zombies come out at night thing there isn't that much that makes it similar to minecraft

When i played it the first time, the first couple of minutes i was like "Wow, 2d minecraft *yawn*" but after an hour i saw the game getting further and further away from it.

About an hour later i was wearing armor made from a meteorite that i caused to crash into the planet by smashing a black orb that some soul eaters were protecting. Then i used my lightsabre and flintlock pistol to fight off a Boss worm that was the size of 30 buses stapled together; and about as hard to kill as it sounds. (Also me and a buddy were lan'ing it)

I recommend this game very much, im not sure if i like it more than minecraft, but time will tell.
Also sand is op.

The only thing the two games have in common is the mining, building, and crafting.

In Minecraft, the world is what you make it. Sure you could go out on an adventure, but all you're really going to find is more untouched (but interesting) landscapes. However, it is also 3D, highly customizable, and a true sandbox (monsters are optional in that regard). You can build how you want, where you want, and do what you want, provided you mine the materials for it (and if mining is your thing, all the power to you).

In Terraria, the world is chalk-full of interesting stuff to find. With it's random events, NPCs, exploration, and combat, it's much more of an RPG than Minecraft, but extremely limited in terms of building (placing stuff always feels clunky to me). While you don't really "level up" in Terraria, you do find objects and such that make you more powerful.

On the technical side of it all, Minecraft has been around for longer, meaning more of the game-breaking bugs have been ironed out, whereas Terraria just came out and bugs are still being discovered. Minecraft also has a somewhat decent netcode, and playing over the internet is rather easy, but Terraria has some weird bug dealing with multiple network connections (if you have an Ethernet port AND wireless, it probably wont work), making it a pain in the ass to actually host a game. Using the third-party LogMeIn Hamachi VPN service seems to be the only reliable way to host and connect to a game.

You should definitely get a tierra; it would look great on you.

Oh, wait...

The game is nothing amazing, but definitely worth $10 if you like adventures.

It is an excellent game.
If not that, it is at least not a Minecraft rip off or bad.
Totally worth 10$

I was pretty skeptical when I first looked at it but for 10 bucks its well worth it, you might get to the higher end content a bit faster then you expect but honestly for the price I've played it more then some of the triple a games I have sitting around.

i have played an hour and a half and it is freakin awesome. it could possibly be my goty so far, gotta play a bit more to really be able to tell. there is one major downfall though. there is no pause button(if there is one can someone please tell me). but yeah it is an awesome game so everyone do yourself a favour and go buy it.

You can pause it by clicking off to something else.

There isn't a pause button where you can stop and look at what is going on though.

Anyway, like they said above, if you were primarily interested in building in minecraft, you will be pretty disappointed in Terraria. If you liked exploring caverns and such more, you'll like Terraria a lot more.
