I just got finished watching Return of the Jedi and I watched number 4 and 5. My question is should I move on to the prequels or should I just stop.
Do not listen to the yay-sayers. I used to think they were decent movies, and loved seeing the rise of Vader. However, the prequels don't stand up to any kind of criticism. They are terrible movies; this is an undisputable fact. For refrence, I point you to this.

There are also reviews for the other two prequels. I'd suggest just watching them rather than the actual movies. George Lucas is a terrible writer, and somehow managed to make Vader a whiney *****. Spare yourself. You'll be better off.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
It depends if you want to like the other starwars movies less, after watching the prequels I've just started not liking starwars as much as I used too.

The number of people saying they aren't really that bad is surprising. Not because I expected more hate from the internet community, but because if you actually stop and look at them with a critical eye, I think a strong argument can be made that they are objectively terrible. From the writing to the acting, directing, and even a lot of the CG animation, they are really bad movies. To be fair to the actors at least, I blame much of their poor performances on the directing and writing. They didn't really have a whole lot to work with here.

But should you watch them? I'll say yes. So long as you go in with the expectation that they aren't very good you won't feel as cheated, and I don't think how poor they are takes away from the originals if you accept that George Lucas apparently went off the deep end as a creator a long time ago. And it avoids leaving you wondering what you were missing out on in the future. So watch them, have a good laugh or two at their expense, then never look at them again.

And one final note; to it's credit, Episode 1 has the best lightsaber combat in the entire series. It's the one thing they really got right out of all 3 movies (though they managed to fuck them up in episode 2).

Yeah you might as well. I mean they're not great but you might as well experience the whole mythology. Episode 3 is actually quite good (don't kill me!), and there's some pretty decent fight scenes. Oh and Samuel Jackson is a Jedi and as usual he's a BAMF. Purple lightsaber? That's just pimp!

Sure. Even if you think there bad movies it's good to watch them so that you know why they are bad. Some people actually like them. Even if you don't its best to be able to talk about it intelligently and that requires actually watching them. There not an issue that is going to go away until certain fanboys up and die anyways.

Yeah, why not? They aren't nearly as good as the originals, but are still entertaining. The duel at the end of The Phantom Menace is amazing.

Also, inb4 people start linking to an hour-long meandering rant on The Phantom Menace.

I think they're worth watching. I was interested to see how Emperor Palpatine actually managed to get where he was.
Also, the lightsaber duels are pretty spectacular compared to the original ones.

Sure, why not. If only to see what the fuzz is about. They're not undeserving of their bad reputation, but they're by no means unwatchable. And should you find them to be, you can always turn them off ^^

I'd say, if you have the free time go for it. They aren't good by any margin, but they are pretty to look at I suppose. If you don't have a lot of free time on your hands, then I wouldn't bother. Your time would be spent elsewhere.

A firm NO to that my friend, if you must experience the prequels in any way watch the Plinkett reviews on Red Letter Media. They take up a comparable chunk of time and are much more entertaining.

Watch them, then watch Mr. Plinkett's reviews by RedLetterMedia. Youtube-search it. They're more entertaining than the movies. :]

As films they are terribly made. They fail to establish likable main characters, and most of the plot/script makes no sense at all.

On top of it all, it's a story that doesn't need to be told. After three full movies, all that happens is we see an angsty, irritating Anakin fall to the darkside and become darth vader. There is no real character arc to it, Anakin never feels like a great or well-liked hero so when he turns it feels pointless.

On top of it all, what makes the movies really terrible, is the laziness with which they were made. Nearly all of the scenes are either actors standing around talking in front of a blue-screen, or the whole screen packed to the brim with mindless computer-generated action. Either way, the computer artists did most of the work, and the effort put into the live action film work is extremely minimal.

they're perfectly catchable films, i've not seen the original films fully but the prequel trilogy was good, not too keen on Ep 2 but the other films were good. just block your ears in Ep 3 when Darth Vader goes 'NOOOOOOOO'

Are you people ten or something? Watch those fucking movies without cringing, I dare you. And don't try to examine any of it logically, because it'll make your heads explode.
I felt the same way when I read those comments. For anyone who hasn't, seriously watch Plinkett's Star Wars Reviews (RedLetterMedia). They are hilarious and eye-opening.
