OT, I think it should be illegal in public places. To everyone who claims that this takes away the freedom to smoke, what about the freedoms of my friend with bad asthma? We've had to leave places just because somebody decides they want to light up.

To be honest I've never seen much of a problem with smoking. Both of my parents have been regular smokers for years and in their case some of the facts that stand are:
*Neither have any major health problems
*They only smoke outside or in designated areas
*They've got duties and kids to look after, a smoke now and then helps take the edge off (because some haven't discovered the joys of stress-relieving videogames)
*Over the years only a few have been uptight enough to voice their opinion on smoking right to their face if so much as a trace of smoke meanders away from the empty or designated area to their precious lungs
*Unless you're constantly being beset by heavy smokers in an enclosed environment second-hand smoke isn't going to kill you, most smokers are careful to do it away from others or in the designated areas
So no, I don't think it should be made illegal. Warned aginst, certainly (my folks have often stressed the point to never take it up with me and my brother), banned outright, of course not.
But who will protect us from the metal gears?

No way/ It is unthinkable! Even if I wasn't a smoker I would still be against it. What next? Ban fast food? Ban alcohol (didn't work that well last time)? Why not ban every fucking freedom and just tell me what I can or can't do. If someone want to slowly kill themselves, let them do it!

My asthmatic friend is smart enough to avoid areas of high smoke concentration and designated areas as well as use his puffer should idiotic smokers disregard the many rules and designated areas put in place to avoid such scenarios. It's a pretty airtight system they've got in place, and frankly if they're having asthma attacks even through all that then they're probably in need of 24/7 medical supervision.QuantumT said:

It doesn't take a high smoke concentration to trigger it. Basically when it gets to the point where I can smell it, he can have an asthma attack.Whitenail said:

Let's look at it from the another perspective though. You have 2 sides, smokers and asthmatics. Why should the rules favor the people that have a choice about it and could go without?
We live in America. If I want to smoke and take a gamble on getting cancer, I damn well will. This country was founded on "Do what you do." It does indeed extend that far. People make rallies blocking off traffic over "chemtrails", I'll smoke and make my own little rally of "Mmmm. Freedom tastes good and makes me want to kill less." Though if you're going on the "people shouldn't negatively affect others" then the right to vote should be decided by an IQ test. It isn't however, because we're not living in Berlin circa 1942.
