Poll: Should the moon have a name?

For the sun I'd prefer Helios of sol, but they're both pretty cool,

As for the moon;

I think luna is just the best, although Selene also sounds nice.

I think that pretty much says it all. Most people aren't aware that the sun and the moon actually do have names because they aren't often referred to by their names.

Remember kids, don't look directly at Sol because you will burn your eyes!

Hell, will add something. While the Sun is Sol, and the Moon is Luna, The Earth itself is called Terra, and we as a species are Terrans, which is what some believe we would call ourselves in the slim chance of us meeting other intelligent life.

It better, because Terran sounds much cooler than Human.

Luna and Sol isnt any better than sun and moon as there just the same word in Latin.

EDIT: and Terra just means Earth, also in Latin

Anyway surely it has a name, that being "moon" the only reason the other moons are given names are because, our moon already has the name moon, and it would just get confusing to call them all moon, it would be like the marklar episode of south park.

As for the name, I'm not quite sure, but since us Americans were the first people to step foot on it, I think that we should have the honor of naming it, if it was ever required.

But it already has a name, plus I think the rest of the world may have something to say about that, especially the Greeks who studied it and its effect that it had on our planet way before America as we know it even existed.

Mass Effect was completed somewhat before Pluto's "demotion" to dwarf planet status. The game therefore treats Pluto as the ninth planet. In Mass Effect 2, however, Pluto is called an "ice dwarf" in its galaxy map description and its orbital path has been removed from the galaxy map.

Pluto's actual name is Yuggoth. This whole 'demotion' business is just to dissuade us from further investigation until it's too late.

It was just a thought. It still think that America, if people ever wanted to change the name, should be the one to do so.

It would have to be a global thing, otherwise I could forsee wars with china over the name of a rock, plus how many Americans would like it if the British decided to name America something else. Or the Russians decided to to give space a name. I am just say i do not want to cause offence, I understand your reasoning, just the implications of it would be huge.

if your name your child Child, than child is both a proper and improper noun for your child. we bin calling the moon Moon before there were other moons than our moon that we new of.

The purpose of a personal name is distinction and once we discovered more moons that name became a classification, thus the distinction was lost and a new one was called for in this thread.

The correct classification is natural satellite. Moon is its name. Calling other natural satellites moons is largely used but incorrect. Its the same as calling certain objects or drugs as the brand of the first one produced just to make easier for people to relate to, but technically is incorrect.

Um... Sun is an astronomical term as well. We just use those names for convenience.

No idea why, though - their scientific names (Luna and Sol) are badass

Our moon's scientific name is "the Moon" according to NASA and the IAU.

I believe it has one - Luna.

Now, I'm not being snarky. I really, really like the name Luna, and I think people should be encouraged to use it whenever they refer to the moon.

Luna is the spanish/italian (and latin) name for it. Like Tierra for Earth or Sol for the Sun. Unlike other celestial bodies who were not commonly refered to by the masses, these 3 got their specific names in each language.

Ha, and even if it hadn't already some names, calling it THE moon is great too.

Say someone would call you THE HUMAN. Not a human, that human over there. THE human... as if you are the perfect specimen the ultra-human.

Same goes for the moon.

I like "the moon". Sure other moons around Saturn and the like have names but this is our moon, and if there is some other species out there, I'm pretty sure they'd have a different word for "moon".

just what i was gonna say.

its just that nobody USES the names. maybe in the future if the human race branches out to other solar systems, it would become confusing if people tried to continue simply calling them "sun and moon".
