Poll: Should the moon have a name?

The problem with "The Moon" is that it sounds pretty fucking stupid outside the English language. Every country has its own version, if we're going to call it anything let it be "Luna" because:

A) Latin is a dead language, no country is associated with it.
B) Every educated person has a basic understanding of Latin and common words like "Luna", not necessarily the case with English.

Well, the moon has a name, and all other moons have names, and really all moons are scientifically called sattilites (Im sorry for my horrible spelling) and the only real moon is OUR moon because its name is LUNA. Or you know, If Valve ever takes over the world (Which is definitely a possibility) the moon will be named Chell, or Wheatley or whatever.

on that note, the moons name is not fucking luna. unless you were alive a couple thousand years ago, if you speak English call it by its English name. MOON. unless your doing a research project and you want to make sure no one gets our moon confused with any other moon, than go ahead and use the dead language name for our moon that no one has speak other than in scientific terms or to pretend there smart in a very long time.

Terra's single natural satellite is named Luna, this is what the scientific community calls it. This is just as valid and accurate a name as calling Mars' satellites Phobos and Deimos.

On that very same train of thought, Earth's real name is Terra, not Earth, as we insist on calling it because it literally makes up the whole of the earth (Read: land) beneath our feet. Calling Terra "Land" or "Dirt" or "Rock" is equally as ridiculous as calling it "Earth" or Luna "Moon", but they're colloquialisms I tend to let slide.

Still following this same train of thought, and, as noted upthread, the Sun's name is Sol.

honestly, i dont really care what NASA thinks on this matter. they also say Pluto isnt a planet anymore, but a "dwarf" planet. i dont agree with that, either. i consider it to be a planet, and i consider its small size to be irrelevant. why not say Jupiter is no longer a planet, but a "gargantuan planet"?

it does bring up another point, though. NASA changes their mind on things, over time. i mentioned this before, but you must know what will inevitably happen if the human race branches out to other planets - other planets with their OWN moons. they will have to name those moons, and call Earth's moon something other than simply, "moon". the name they would most likely go with would probably be "Luna"... but until then, sure, we will continue to just call it "The Moon", and you will be happy as a clam for that, im sure.

also, many other cultures gave the moon names before your precious NASA, IAU, Webster, and Oxford ever existed. therefore, there are many names for the moon. and none of them have to be proper nouns. know why? because its a name. when you name something, you can name it whatever the hell you want, you can MAKE UP a word. if i were to discover a planet someday, i would probably name it Psstgkitillia or something ridiculous like that, just to irritate people like yourself.

The Sun is a star. The Moon is a satellite. No one else would have any reason to call their stars or satellites Moon or Sun.

That... isn't trolling. At all. Moon/Luna Sol/Sun are names for both of them. Official names aer obviously Moon and Sun, but... it wasn't completely wrong. I don't really get it.

That is just hilarious bullshit logic there. Any alien species that encounters us won't understand our language, so they won't understand the terms "moon" and "sun" other than the fact that we've named our Kroshlar and Zeepta "Moon" and "Sun" respectively.

See what I did there? If you understood that language, you'd understand that they named EVERY moon and sun after their world leaders, a much more egocentric thing to do.

All joking aside, do you see my point? How do we know we aren't incredibly humble compared to other intelligent life forms in the galaxy?

To us they have meaning, but to an alien species, they're nothing but unintelligible words.
