Hello Escapist, I was wondering about your views on the subject of H1N1 flu, in particualr the vaccine for it. I'm going to assume that anyone answering this thread doesn't give in to the "it's not tested enough/it's linked to autism" hype. If you do, just say (for the sake of discussion) that the H1N1 vaccine is completely safe.

Should we mandate that people get this vaccine? Due to the highly communicable nature of the virus, some might argue that others not getting the vaccine could infringe upon their health. On the other hand, it's a person's choice to be vaccinated. I'm sort of 50/50 on this one. What are your opinions?

Not so sure about mandated, but at the very least something should be done about parents who don't give their kids vaccines for religious or whatever reasons.

Edit: Nevermind, didn't read OP 'cause I'm stupid. Swine flu vaccines shouldn't be mandatory, the whole thing is silly.

Well, in the US there are some groups who don't belive or use Modern Medicine and as such, don't get vaccines. I would suppport mandateing it though as it is proably best to ensure the health of others.

Nope, because sometimes you already have the virus in your system, and then that just boosts it up. Or you just contract it from the vaccine anyway.

Free will is nice and stuff.

No, it shouldn't.
The virus has been massively over hyped. Most of Britain was supposed to be in bed or in a coffin because of it Are they? To my knowledge, and the fact no paper has mentioned it for a while, no they're not.

Nothing can ever be 100% sure for everyone. Still everyone should get vaccinated for the vast majority of diseases (the ones that are common enough to warrant it of course) but nobody should ever be forced to do anything

Only some people, doctors, nurses, social workers etc. The ones in contact with people with compramised immune systems...And those people too.

Well, that's pretty much ended all discussion.

Seriously, I don't give a damn about being vaccinated. I had the opportunity to do and declined it. The bacon flu is only as threatening as normal flu, and I'm not in danger from dying thanks to it or anything.

If you MANDATE something, it should only be because that thing is necessary.

It should have spread to a large portion of the population, it's not deadly though. Nobody ever said that. People did say it had the potential to be deadly, which is true, it certainly does. But it isn't.
I'm almost certain that didn't make sense....

No. The swine flu is no more dangerous than the regular flu. It kills the exact same people- those with compromised immune systems (the very young, the very old, or the already ill). The only reason people freaked out was its rate of spread, but getting a bunch of people slightly ill is hardly something to worry about. It is not deadly to the general populace. Mandating a vaccine is stupid for something like this.

Even if it was completely safe (which it isn't) and even if Swine Flu was any more dangerous to normal people than the normal seasonal Flu (which it isn't) the vaccine should absolutely not be mandatory for the public. Ever. I would leave the country before I would take a mandatory vaccine for some overhyped "pandemic".

No, chiefly because the vaccine for the Swine Flu is absolute bullshit. It's the FLU for fuck's sake, we've suffered from it for thousands of years. It's got pretty much the same mortality rate as the good ol' human variant.

This. The swine Flu isn't nearly as dangerous as the normal flu. Not even close. The ONLY thing about it is that it is widespread, which the ONLY reason that it got any noteriety at all. And the vaccine? not only do they not have enough, it isn't completely safe. Besides all of the other reasons already stated about the vaccine (or future vaccines).

It is hyped up far beyond what it should be.

So, no, Mandatory vaccines are not a good idea

That would be the same thing as mandatory, since i think you're assuming that everyone else already has the vaccine... even if you aren't, why would you want to make people get vaccines? Maybe people and their kids are already healthy, and don't want to jepordize their children's health with an unsafe vaccine?

Also, wasn't there some kind of bird flu a while ago that was also supposed to extrememly dangerous? And the swine flu isn't as dangerous as the regular Flu. Not even close.

I actually kinda agree with you on the health thing, I'm just targeting the ones who neglect their kids for religious reasons.

And silly me, I didn't really read the OP, I was talking about other vaccines (like polio) when I was talking about ones kids should be given. This whole swine flu thing is overblown. So yes, as far as swine flu vaccines are concerned, I agree with you, McNinja.

What about the people that don't get sick? Why should they get shots that could go to someone else that needs it? I am one of these people. My roommate and 6-7 of my friends got H1N1 and I interacted with all of them when they were sick and I haven't gotten it. Also, would we have the supplies to pull this off?
