Poll: Should Yahtzee Review Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind?

I'd prefer a Metroid Prime review, but that's just because it's my favorite game and Yahtzee seemed to like it when he mentioned it.

Johnny Novgorod mentioned Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and that's another good one. I'm sure he'd have a lot to say about the wonderful traps and the somewhat anemic combat.

I guess the problem with reviewing Morrowind for me is... I don't really care for it. The Elder Scrolls games tend to be big sandboxes with minimal or generic subplots to play with. The gameplay itself isn't that interesting to talk about. Morrowind has some creative world design, but I'd still prefer something else. Hell, Daggerfall would at least be a lot funnier because of how bloated that game is.

The thing is, Morrowind is loads more technical and complex than Oblivion or Skyrim, but its combat system has basically no work attached to it. But it was one of the last few major games that didn't hold your hand, and that does make it kind of special to gamers who view it with nostalgia, nowadays you'd be surprised if quests DIDN'T just solve themselves.

he spoke of it in relation to oblivion. He doesn't really like it I think. This is saying little in one of his reviews but I'm pretty sure it falls well outside of the "games I actually really like" cathegory

OT: I don't see why not. Though if I know Yahtzee, and I think I maybe kind of do, he'll probably praise it where it deserves and rip it apart where it needs to be. A lot of the Morrowind fanboys are definitely wearing nostalgia-goggles, because it's not as good as you all remember.

I'm pretty sure that 'better' is in the eye of the beholder?

I am a big fan of Earl Grey, in fact I was brought up with only that in the house, and it was only when I was older I found that it wasn't 'normal' tea. I would obviously say it was better than other teas, however, this is just how I perceive it, and obviously doesn't take into account anyone elses views! Not only that, but I haven't even tried all the worlds teas... A rare Oolong from the mountains of (Where Oolong is grown) could be better... but at the moment I have my view. IT doesn't mean that Earl Grey is actually any better though. In fact, how do you even score it? Surely if you pitted the qualities off against eachother, (colour, accessibility, availibility, price, strength, taste) Earl Grey would win on many levels, but it isn't the most popular. I will always like earl grey more than other teas, but it doesn't make it the best, but that doesn't mean other teas are the best ether... they are all just different teas with different fandoms!

Replace Earl Grey with Skyrim, and other Teas with Morrowind and there you have it! (Well... in most of the metaphor, and you can fill in the other changes mentally)

Yahtzee already gave his general impression of Morrowind in his Oblivion review. Despite only playing it for a handful of hours and comparing it to the Glastonbury Festival (whatever that is...pardon my ignorant Yank-ness), a text blurb at the end of the credits indicated that he quite enjoyed it, or at least liked it better than Oblivion.

If he did give it the full review treatment, I'd imagine his likes (more unique setting and open-endedness) and dislikes (clunky combat mechanics, cliff racers) would be pretty much what you'd expect.

I don't see a reason for Yahtzee to review it - he already mentioned it in Oblivion's review for one, and next...there isn't much to say we don't already know or we can't really guess. It's either going to be the exact same thing we are aware of or he'd highlight some stuff that wouldn't leap immediately to mind, like...I don't know the sun looking nice or something.

First off... We all have different opinions on what makes the "greatest game ever". As far as I can tell it boils down to how much enjoyment we get out of it, and we all enjoy different things.

Secondly... I tried picking Oblivion back up. I adored Oblivion, and I have incredibly fond memories of wandering Cyrodiil. But, after playing Skyrim, I find myself simply unable to go back to playing Oblivion. There are too many improvements in Skyrim that I now take for granted that I notice too strongly in Oblivion, and that ruins my enjoyment and stops me from becoming immersed in it. Which is a shame, but it's not the only sequel/prequel that had that effect on me.

I've never played Morrowind; and I'm sad about that, because I have a very strong suspicion that those steps backwards, that aging, will be even more glaringly obvious now. Would a ZP review really make a difference to you now? You have all these wonderful memories of Morrowind, and maybe you can even go back and get as much enjoyment from the game as you used to be able to. Isn't that enough?

(In short: No. Plus I'm pretty sure Yahtzee doesn't like being told what games to review.)

The graphics and fighting mechanics are pretty darn archaic at this point. The game was fantastic and new (before Morrowind there was no legitimate notion of sandbox worlds that you were really free to explore) when we it came out but I don't know how well it'd fare now.

He should retro review Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I think that's the only one of his Super Awesome Games he hasn't reviewed (he already did Silent Hill 2, Half Life and Shadow of the Colossus).

He still hasn't done a full killer7 review either, despite eluding to it several times. It's clearly the best Suda51 game, and ripe for commentary. I really want to here his thoughts on what rocked/what sucked with it.

Not, it isn't. And a trilogy has 3 titles in it, so you're wrong there too. And having one man's opinion on the subject does not confirm your personal biases are true.

I have no opinion on Marrowind. I never played it.
I think it was titled the best because it was a HUGE leap from it's predecessors. I'm just waiting for the Skyrim mod remake to come out.
However I doubt Yahtzee reviewing it will make a difference.
He is, after all just a reviewer with his own opinions.
So what he deems as good and bad, might not be the same for everyone else.

The only real steps backwards Morrowind has are in it's technical graphics and combat (which was poor at the time). It's a lot more open than either of it's successors (for instance, there are no immortal NPCs) and a lot more effort was put into the main story. The lack of fast travel might be an issue for some, but the world isn't so terribly huge that it feels like a chore. The fact that the landscape is so bizzare makes exploration more fun, too. I'm not nostalgic for it, either, considering I played it *after* Oblivion and Skyrim.

Then again, I spend a lot of time playing old games so maybe the archaic mechanics just didn't bother me as much as they would someone who largely plays new games.
