(I did search bar this and didn't find anything, so if it turns out am wrong feel free to bully me like crazy)

So I was just thinking about the word lie and why do people do it.

Is it to save loved ones from a horrible truth.

To save yourself from a mistake you made.

Or to get out off a horrible situation.

So what am asking is what are your views on lying and when should you do it.

Edit: I notice a few posts about the third option in the poll, its there now please don't mention it again.

How come there's no option for "You should lie whenever you feel like it." That's what I usually do.
ya i agree with this one i lie whenever i want. so fun messing with peoples feelings

I put the second option, but there should be a third option that involves lying constantly.

Everyone lies, from little white lies you tell someone to keep their feelings from being hurt, "Aww.....What a..cute..baby." To medium ones you tell to keep yourself out of trouble. "I've never seen that box of condoms in my life." To the grandiose ones people tell in court. "I did not rape and murder those twelve children."

All this talk of lying reminds me that The Invention of Lying is coming out soon. That looks like a really good movie.

I'm a terrible liar...

For a full year after i graduated from university, i was struggling to find work.. I got a ton of interviews, and always thought i did a good job of answering the questions as honestly as possible, but never got any call-backs... Friends of mine all told me "oh gosh, you have to lie!" Like when encountered with a question that you have no clue on, for instance "Are you familiar with C Sharp Programming?"

If you have no clue, say "yes"...That's what they were telling me..

Now i always thought the proper tact was to say "i am not familiar with that one, could you tell me what it's used for? OH, okay i don't know THAT one, but i worked with a language that did something SIMILAR....yadayada.."

Well, in this one interview, i just said screw it and tried lying, and the next question was "great! Could you give us an example of how you would write yadayada RIGHT NOW?"

I was busted hardcore.

Then i hear stories about the guy i work with who claimed that when he went for his interview, and they asked him a question he didn't understand or no, he just nodded his head.. Didn't say anything, just nodded.. AND HE GOT THE JOB?

I don't get it. I just don't.

At any rate, lying has always gotten me in trouble.. ALWAYS, so i just don't do it anymore.. No matter how much the truth hurts, i have to tell it..

Only if it's called for. I don't like lying, but people who think that lying is some ultimate evil are trying too hard.

I lied to my boyfriend about his birthday stuff for 2 months. I lied to him to surprise him.

I guess that makes me a bad person.

We all know 300 you know this is sparta bla bla bla but when the spartans+athenians were fighting the persians the athenians had to stop the persians navy with there navy but only 3years before that they only had 100 ships and the athenian government says the persians won't attack so no need for ships then a navy commander(or somthing like that) lied to the athenians and said an island of the coast is planning to stop the athenians ships from passing so immediately the athenians government started building ships and they had 200 by the time xerxes attacked. The athenians were still out numbered at see but they only lost a few ships only the last day or so. Even though the persians won on land this was probably vital for the comeback of Alexander the Great( some facts might be a little off but it's round about right)

So yes a lie can save a great nation.

Me and a few freinds where talking about this recently. We are not full time jobseekers yet, as we are just starting uni, but we where talking about making good CV's. Basically we all concluded you just had to be economic with the truth.

For instance when i was 11, 12 and 13 years old i did some voluntary work at a childrens activity club as a supervisor. In a CV i said i have done volunteer work supervising young children, but not said how old i was one i had done them. If i am feeling like a liar, i could have easily pretended to have done the voluntary work at 14, 15, and 16. (I am 18 now) If your a poor liar, do not blatantly lie by telling a false fact, as that will show, but you can always omit certain less desirable details.

Here's another exhample- i could tell an interviewer that i regularly debate political issues online. (On this board) I give only vague detail about it being a game website, if i asked i would have to concede it is, but i would give impressive examples of any "high brow" debates which i have had, such as- explained and debated the Lisbon Treaty, discussed if we should keep the royal family or not, explained the problems of Utopian society's, discussed the relative merits of capatalism and socialism. I would also add emphasis on how international this board is, because that makes it sound more impressive. Take control of the interview and talk about what you want to tell them, that's how you sell yourself.
