So, as I have been looking around the video game market recently, I've noticed several franchises that are consistently being produced year after year with little in the way of gameplay alterations. This is what's known as shovelware children. Take any of the EA Sports games - probably the easiest example I can give - or the Guitar Hero series. Now, I don't care if the game are good or not (Guitar Hero is... just like to point that out), but I find it incredibly annoying when a studio's primary goal is to recreate the same game every year. Shovelware. I fuckin' hate it.

Well enough of that - opinions?

Scenario 1:
"Ok, guys, we need more money, so what do we do?"
"Ummm... How about Madden?"
"Will people buy Madden if we add one to the year, update the graphics, and the player stats?"
"Most definitely they will"
"Then its settled"

Scenario 2:
"Ok, we need a new game."
"Eh, lets make a game and slap 'MARIO', 'ZELDA', 'MEGAMAN', 'SONIC', 'HERO', 'HALO', or CALL OF DUTY' on the box respectively to the type of game it is."
"I don't know, will the consumers go for it?"
"Like shooting fish in a barrel"

So long as the consumer buys it, the company will make it. If you buy these games you claim to hate, blame yourself. If you don't, get over it. It isn't affecting you in the slightest.

I have no moral objections, if that's what you're asking. If the games are good, then I like them.

I thought you were referring to all the free useless/shitty programs that come with other programs/devices you buy. My HP printer, for instance, added 3 buttons to my toolbar, as well as terrible imaging software, a nonfunctional troubleshooting program and weekly updates. For my printer...

Pretty much this right here, a company cant run without money so they'll bring it in however they can. Though I personally wouldn't complain about a new Megaman franchise.

I didn't think that shovelware WAS a franchise that repeated its mechanics year-by-year.
When I hear shovelware I think of games by third party developers with little to no quality standards, often picking up the market run off of other, more popular games. See: Brain Voyage, a crappy knock off of Brain Age.

If I like the game, I don't care, if I don't then I'll spend lengthy amounts of time telling people how crap it is. But I'm like that with everything.

I don't like it, but I see why they do it. To a degree, it can even be a good thing, with a good game/concept.
