Why does everyone seem to hate side missions? I love doing side missions on all games, even if the side missions are generic. Recently ive played through Mass Effect and from what ive heard, people complain alot about the boring side missions and how generic they are but ive found myself visiting every planet, talking to every NPC just to get every mission done..

Anyway, what are your opinions on side missions?

I must not be looking in the right places. I enjoy side-missions, and people I tend to talk to also enjoy them.

I like ones that are fun. I didn't like mass effect's because the search ones were do goddamn boring.

The pirate ones and stuff, however, were awesome.

I like them the most when they have some relevance to the plot or characters. When they're just thrown in for the helluva it, it feels like padding. In Mass Effect, the best of the side missions either tied into your origin (especially the ones for the Sole Survivor and Colonist histories) or had a strong story in their own right (like the Cerberus ones). But sometimes its hard to justify swinging by every little colony when there's a galaxy to save.

And if the main story's good enough, I often have a hard time doing all the side missions during my first run, because I really want to see how the main plot ends. But since I'm the type of gamer who plays things multiple times, this works alright for me.

Some are good, some are bad.

It depends on many factors, if there's a story and a reward at the end I'll be interested. If it's a case of "find X amount of Y" then I get bored and don't bother.

For me I'll usually wait til my second play through to play the side missions. Unless they're either a lot of fun or can net me a bunch of cash, I don't worry about them to much.

I'll always complete the main story missions first, before I start any side missions. Some of these missions I enjoy, others I find quite frustrating.

if they offer adequate rewards and are entertaining, then yes, i do like them. but i hate it when the side missions have side missions like in dragon age.

Fable 1 and 2's side missions were boring and relatively unrewarding. In games like just about any Zelda or most of the Bioware games, the way to get some cool equipment (sometimes the best equipment: Biggoron's Sword) is to do the side quests, which are often full of interesting characters and tasks.
So, Sometimes.

Mass Effect's are freakin' boring, and that may have killed my love for them.

However, for the most part I enjoy them and look forward to a reward. Or even jsut a good time.

Try doing that on Fallout 3 without any DLCs.

i love the fallout 3 side missions, especially the one with the super heroes, slipping grenades in their pants and watch those bitches run and explode

I like fun ones, which have cool rewards. Generic ones are fun when there is a decent reward or variety.

Award for most annoying side mission? "OH NOEZ, MY BAWWWOOOOONNNN" *twitch*

I like side quests if they're done right, like when you get rewards for them and they're fun to do. Prototype side missions were just massive killfests, which while fun at first they get repetive.

My beef with ME1 side missions was with the journal. Having to go into the Normandy to figure out where the next mission is drove me nuts. I finally broke down and got a notebook.

I only do main quest lines when there is literally nothing else I could possibly do, such is my love of sidequests.

As long as they're not too tedious and boring, they are most welcome since they provide for more hours of entertainment. And I'd like to enjoy it to the fullest if I pay 50 euros/40 pounds for a game.

I'm the opposite. I don't continue on until I've completely done everything I can in an area, because I'm certain I will find treasure or unlock other options in the game that I would miss out on or otherwise be able to not return to later in the game.
In ME1 It took me like 6 hours before I even left the Citadel the first time because I was obsessed with exploring every nook and cranny of that place and each thing I did unlocked some other thing to do.

I don't like pointless side missions. If I go out of my way to do something, then reward me. Give me an item, or money, or an interesting character history
