It depend's on what genre of games, Shooter's do not need side quest's(except Borderland's and maybe some other's).
RPG's on the other hand do'nt necessarily need side quest's but playing a Final Fantasy(or Square Enix type games) without side quest would be like eating a sandwich with just butter on it.

The more i hear about Final Fantasy XIII the less and less excited i am about it(not many sidequest;s, linear gameplay, linear dungeon's and no town's(or many or if any Talkable NPC's, I find Squares excuse for no town's kinda flimsy "your on the run from the goverment" so you cant wear a wig or a disguise seeing as the people looking for you will only have seen you in the one costume which i doubt you will change at all).

Getting the ultimate weapon for each charater or new summon's or Hidden charater's is awesome.

I actually prefer doing sidequests than the main quest. I must do all of the side quests too. So, hell no they aren't overrated.

The Dark Brotherhood sidequest in oblivion was better than the actual quest.

If they are interesting Planescape-type sidequests, then they are awesome. They flesh-out the world and give the game replay value. Bonus points for sidequests that revolve around one of your party members. The type where you learn about their dark past sort of thing.

Way too often are sidequests over-hyped. Sometimes because it really doesn't accomplish much besides doing the quest itself.

Maybe its just me, but when I go out of my way to accomplish a bunch of extra stuff, I want to have a nicer kickback than "Heres 100 bucks, enjoy" I mean, really? All that effort, and possible death, and I get a reward that I will spend on one thing.

Sidequests just are not worth what you have to put into them, more often than not.

I really enjoy sidequests!

How bad would Fallout 3 be without them? Very!
fallout 3 is pretty bad even with the sidequests in my opinion...
anywho, i love sidequests. in dragon age i loved delving into my companions backstories through thier sidequests and the nice little rewards from the other ones.

thanks for telling us a spolier was ahead, you ass.
It would have been smart to stop reading at the point I said I was gonna give ME2 examples. I don't know, it takes some effort of your own avoid the spoilers. It's obvious people won't remember to mark them every time.

I love the concept of them, but they are often quite boring. Usually people just being shit and losing things.

When they're done well though, I love them. Kotor did them particularly well I think.
KoTOR's side quests weren't as much great as they were not bothersome. I mean, it wasn't that interesting to find the robot's recording or kill the Mandalorians in Kashyyk, but it didn't completely derail you from the main story either.

Of course, half of the game's main plot plays like a side quest anyway, one that ties with the main story (which makes them at least sensible to do), but still not quite integral part of it. You always need to do a bunch of more or less unrelated stuff to get the star maps.

Provided that after their completion you get some reward that is actually useful but doesn't break the game they're are good. Also make them entertaining! If a sidequest is boring I won't finish it.

It's bad side quests that suck.
I agree. I have gone through the side quests of Oblivion and ignored the main story right up until I had nearly nothing left. I loved leveling up my character and exploring the world before it started getting wrecked by Oblivion Gates. And I appreciate any game that allows you lots of side quest options but does not penalize you if you do not complete them. Likewise I like it when the game doesn't feel it has to push you along to the end because you are having fun being thorough (like Spore did, grr).

And the real beauty of side quests is that it lets me milk the game for more enjoyment for longer so I have less time to wait for the next great game. ^-^
