I love sniping in games, which I guess is more stealthy.

Taking a room out with a silenced pistol without anyone realising is also far cooler than unleashing 5000 bullets into the walls and occasionally hitting some people too.

Part of the reason I'm dying to play Splinter Cell: Conviction.

How on earth would you silence a battle axe?
It's not the battle axe making the noise, it's the people you're hitting with it. How to silence them? More battle axe, naturally.

I use knives. I paint them red so I can run really fast.

I like both, especially when mixed. I was playing Mirrors Edge yesterday in the parking garage part. Stole the first guy's gun then proceeded to massacre the rest of the guys.

As far as MW2 goes, I'll only go silent long enough to get a heartbeat sensor. I can't stand the range reduction; I want to be useful at any distance... save for the requisite "stealth" class, that is. Only really play it for counter-sniper purposes.

Anyway, yeah. IRL, I'll definitely take the noise reduction so I don't have to compromise my ability to pick up on ambient noise. Won't go for subsonic ammunition, I'm only looking to preserve my senses.

Loud and proud. Give me the gatling gun and I'll tear everything to pieces. I suck at being stealthy.

if you're sneaky you can take down five enemies at once so I choose silent. its better to go behind and surprise them then running in the open.

Silenced, as sexy as a huge "boom" sounds, the light "pitoo!" of a quiet shot, followed by the slump of a body hitting earth always makes me feel more immersed in the game.

That said, silenced weapons usually suck. Unless they're crossbows. <3

I like me some assault rifles, machine guns and the occasional shotgun, so I'd say loud and proud.

Not stealthy, per se, but tactical. For example, I'll be unsilenced, but behind you.

And then behind your friend.

And then behind your team.

Muahahaha.

Non-silenced unless it has to be. If a silenced weapon needs to be carried it's better to use a handgun calibre weapon (9*19mm, 9*18mm or 0.45 calibre). Rifle suppressors are ineffective, at best. (Generally generating a similar level of sound to a car door being slammed)

In addition, subsonic 5,56 or 5,45 ammo severely lacks stopping power, almost every modern military has vests that'll stop that. Only very developed nations have vests that'll stop a standard round, and even these are standard issue for most troops due to their weight and general clunkyness.

The obvious exception to this is the new Russian 9*39mm round, used in the AS VAL and VSS Vintorez rifles (and others, though these are best silenced ones), which maintains high subsonic stopping power due to it's size and design.

Stealth operations by no means should rely on silenced weapons, as they still generate a visible flash. This is extremely noticeable during night-time as well. (IIRC, during the night, the human eye can pick out a single candle 5km away)

I'd also like to state that if you didn't know about suppressed weapons needing subsonic ammunition you probably shouldn't argue with this.

And now, to debunk the flawed arguments everyone else has made!

Anyway, pretty much every army in the world uses the sneaky approach too, it's sensible battle planning. Apart from the USA, of course. The USA seems to love being loud and proud...
I'mma call bullshit. Out of the major modern armies (The US, UK, Germany, France, Israel, India, Russia and China) the US, if anything, use the most silenced weapons per head. I don't have anything to back this, and it's possible the Russian's have more, but they don't use them as much. The Russian Doctrine focuses heavily on high-mobility, well armed and armoured task force tactics, with specialist operations being used for peacekeeping afterwards.

Silenced guns.

They make Pew pew noises.
Nopers! They make "Thunk thunk" and "click click" noises. Watch this:

Loud and proud, although I am usually a stealth person. Actually it's loud and proud with snipers and silenced and sneaky with sub machine guns.

Silenced, close and personal. Something in .45, or more preferably something pointy for when they're within arm's reach. If they're far away; loud, proud, one shot, then i'm getting the fuck out of there.

Really? I thought a suppressor eliminates almost all of the muzzle flash. Of course, "almost all" doesn't cut it for night ops, as you mentioned, but it's still the preferable option.

Back on topic, though: There are a million games out there that give all the dakka you could possibly want; I much prefer the stealthy approach, just for a change of pace. Unless it's a shotgun. Now there's a weapon that just has to be loud.

Loud noise to your left so I can stab you from the right. Noise does have its uses though, mostly as a distraction or tool of psychological warfare. Secrecy makes it harder for others to know where to shoot and since getting shot is bad, silence is my preferred method. It's how I beat my friends at their FPS's (usually Halo) though I rarely play it. They like firefights, I come from behind with a shotgun or sword and then disappear again. Seriously, you play a non-stealth game with stealth in multi and it's disturbingly easy at times

*edit* bows are conveniently silent and will pierce just about every conventional body armor out there these days (don't know how well it does against solid plates but it rips through kelvar.

Loud and proud. If it doesn't go BOOM at at least 120 dB, I don't feel like doing any damage at all.
