I would rather have a charater that talks because it just adds more color to the character. I'm pretty sure that if I was being shot at and was blowing people away with a shotgun I would have something to say(like the characters in Gears of War 2). But thats just my opinion. So escapists whats yours?

I like talkative characters better. I can relate to them better, and their personality comes through much more easily.

I like talkative characters as well though think it's unrealistic when they have long in depth conversations during firefights or car chases. In real life, wouldn't those conversations simply be some swearing or, at least, shorter? Save the long speeches for when I've got time to focus on what you're saying instead of being more concerned with avoiding the bullets that are being shot at my skull or trying to drive a vehicle down a crowded street while fighting off other cars that are trying to make me crash or go "boom".

I like a character who can talk but also says something, an asshole who won't shut the fuck up and never says anything smart or interesting is a serious pain in the sack.

Example of good, Elika in the new PoP, she talks when it is necessary and besides the few context sensitive snippets she keeps quiet.

Example of bad, Any game with a high-pitched little bastard who follows you around, Akko in Onimusha 3, any kid characters you have to protect.

It is all about the comments, the context and the tone. I love good voice acting. I'm LOVING Mass Effect for that alone. But characters with whiny voices, who make stupid comments?

Please no.

I'd rather have a character who has no emotions or voice instead of one who is a douche/has terrible voice acting. This is why I hate Oblivion, most of the voices are so damn annoying after a while.

In Oblivion you play a silent protagonist.

I prefer ones with voices, feels like the character is part of the world rather than just a force acting on the world, if you get me.

If you're referring to Silent Protagonists, I sometimes like 'em 'cause then it allows me to substitute in my own voice.

I'd rather just read what they're saying. Talking characters are too distracting and mostly annoying. Rarely is there a good voice actor and script that can pull it off.

It all depends on the character's personality for me. If they character with a voice is just a complete douchebag on a stick then i'd rather them shutting the hell up and their mouth's getting sewn shut.

Depends on if I like what they say. I love the out of place british wise cracking in Saints Row 2 but wouldn't like it if Gordon Freeman Eulogized every whitecoat that died screaming.

I prefer talkative, but I get to choose what they say. Quiet characters are silly, ones that are talkative are alright for telling a story about a character, but I like having control over how my character interacts with the world and it's peoples.

Yep, I prefer talkative. They usually have a lot more personality that way.

Sometimes the character personality annoys me, so I guess I would prefer it Silent, I already am the mute who does anything anyone asks him to do, so I can get behind quiet guys.

alot of the times its just an easy thing to cut out of a game for some companies, if you dont like their voices and stuff you could just turn down the voices to minimum volume in the menu (which is in most games) so if you dont like em then there is that, so i always prefer it, and i dont get annoyed by voices easily at all due to some people i know in person, so i prefer voices

I like RPGs with silent characters, because it allows me to "roleplay" the character more easily. Harder to do when they have their own distinct personality already. Then again, Shephard in Mass Effect talks a lot, and yet I love those games.

FPS's are fine with talkative characters, because it's story driven in a much more enclosed way, rather than being something you project yourself into. Then again, Gordon Freeman never says a word, and yet I love those games.

Thus, it varies.

In games where you get to choose your dialogue I prefer a talkative character: Mass Effect as opposed to Dragon Age. But Most games I'm fine with silent protagonists.

It depends on the game. Sometimes I don't mind silent characters, but I think I wouldn't like a silent character in any kind of modern game, no matter what genre.
