I'd say the vampire lord form is worth it, since you no longer need a mount and can fly across water.

For the record: they straight-up give you a crossbow before you have to officially make your choice...so you don't have to worry about missing out on the new weapon.
It's not the crossbow that's the problem, it's the crossbow bolts that are difficult to acquire. Without joining the Dawnguard there is no where to buy them or craft them, so as a vampire you are more or less left with picking them off dead Dawnguard members. Although, I'm pretty sure there's an exploit with illusion spells that allows you to craft them as a vampire.
PC players can just give themselves bolts via console commands if they were so inclined.

OT: I have played both options but I generally prefer Dawnguard on replays, its less of a buggy experience than the Vampire side of things.

With the Better Vampires mod, vampire lord is a lot more fun to play around as (basically, way more vampire perks, spells, abilities, ways to feed, and complete customisability through MCM, as well as being a basic vampire having it's own levelling system.). This is the only Scrolls game I've played where I have an alternate form, and it's great fun. Dawnguard ultimately has better missions, story and the like though.

If you really wanted, you could become a Vampire, then get a mod that lets you continue the Dawnguard storyline, as a sort of hidden vampire.

Besides, the eyes make you look pretty menacing:

Dawnguard all the way baby. Fuck vampires, let them burn in the cleansing fire of the light of the sun, and restoration magic. And the power of that Daedric Prince who hates undead (I forget her name), and Arkay (The god of death who hates undead).

May they be purged in fire and light.

Go with your gut, OP. Actually, no. Who do you like better, Dracula or Van Helsing? You got your answer right there.

Personally I go with Dawnguard because vampirism in Skyrim, it's just not interesting.

Also, if you go Vampire it does't "really" matter how you spec your character, the vampire lord form doesn't get bonuses from your skill trees.

Brb, just going to perform the black sacrament.
I use the bones I scavenge from his corpse to forge a sword, which I then name Paarthurnax in honor of our glorious combat.

Skyrim has abysmal vampire story content. Bad vampires doing bad things because they're bad and stuff. Become a vampire and it changes basically nothing. Worst aspect of the game, IMO.

Dawnguard, because I am too much of a goody two shoes to do anything bad, even in Skyrim.

pfft, I think of it as a good deed. Those hordes of bandits on the roads aren't going to drink themselves. Also the vampires are providing jobs for all the thralls. Without the assistance of our fanged brethren, they would be out on the street begging for bread. :)

Always liked Dawnguard better. That Dwemer crossbow, it was love at first murder. Plus all the crazy bolts you can get for it. Also, I usually RP as crazy/good and am a huge Castlevania fan so vampire killer fit the bill. Now if you were going full Mage, I'd say vamp it up. V-lords stomp ass in that regard, but for non-magical leaning twinks, the guard is the way to go

Dawnguard, every time.
To be honest, I didn't even like being saddled with a `friendly` vampire and wished I could just kill her, especially since the game was trying to make me give a damn about her, and that was so not happening.

Where you go into the Soul Cairn and meet Serana's mother and she talks about how you'd just kill her cause she's a vampire and you're a Dawnguard, ignoring how vampires do exactly the same thing and also eat people so she can't exactly claim moral highground

So yeah, I'd kill every single vampire.

But I did save it before my choice, choose vampire, get all the perks for the achievement and then reload so none of it had ever happened.
