I heard 'before i Forget' on Guitar Hero 3, liked it. But never bought it or listened to it otherwise.

So i guess its a 'meh' for me.

I dont really know too much of them. My drummer is a bit of a maggot but I only really know Before I Forget, which I happen to like a fair bit.

I love the band. I can see why most of the metal community would hate them. I read up on their fan forums when im bored and its 5 in the morning and ive had too much Amp; anyway apparently alot of fans are mad that Corey Taylor (lead singer) made the band Stonesour and used the sort of weaker hard rock crowd to pull more fans to slipknot as opposed to stronger metal heads who have followed the band from its roots. This angered them i guess, cause they come to see Corey Taylor rather than for the actual band, i dunno. I just like their music.
Yeah from what I was told Corey and Jim(the guitarist whose in stone sour and slipknot) spend most of their time with slipknot, when they aren't playing, writing stuff for stone sour. So it seems that they aren't focused what so ever on Slipknot :S
Woah Jim Root is going over to Stone Sour!? Fuckin eh, if that damn cyst of a band hadnt appeared they might have put out an album comparable to Iowa, rather than a the newest POS that they released
Jim Root was in Stone Sour before he was in Slipknot.

Yes, Stone Sour came before Slipknot. They just didn't get famous until afterwards. If those "people who had followed the band from its roots" had actually followed it from its roots, they'd know that...

Okay I was on ultimate-guitar recently checking the news in the rock and metal world and There was an article on the Kerrang! awards in which Slipknot won best international and best live band. I read the comments and it seems like the ENTIRE metal community on there hates them, but I want to ask the escapists on their opinion of Slipknot. How do you feel about the nine masked band?
When I saw them live that was when I realized I wasn't a fan. Stonesour are much better, and Corey should make an album more similat to the first album. Subliminal verses was awful.
They've become mainstream, but not in a good way, like say, Eskimo Joe.

Iowa was pretty good in an experimental sort of way, and Subliminal Verses had it's okay moments.
But the fanbase does tend to give them a really, really bad name.
And Stone Sour is just garbage.

Not a huge metal fan, btw.

My opinion is that they are a fantastic transition band for people who will eventually get into heavier, more intelligent music.
To paraphrase Tsiolkovsky; 'Slipknot is the cradle of a young metalhead, but one cannot eternally live in a cradle.'

I like them, to be honest. I can understand why metal fans would hate them - their last two albums saw their sound mellow and expand... a lot of the songs weren't really that metal. And that's why I like them; they've experimented without worrying what others say.

Sorry to use you as an example but you seem to have said something I was about to expand on.

Personally, I don't like the music, angsty lyrics, faux brutality and without the masks I honestly believe they wouldn't have nearly as big a fan base. But the one thing that really gets to me is the fans. They seem so adamant that slipknot are the most BR00T4L band going and that Joey Jordison is the best drummer EVAARRR. In answer to what you said, "not metal enough" believe me, Slipknot may have a metallic riff here and there but in the few songs I've heard I've not heard any real metal characteristics, it's just heavily distorted hard rock with rapped/yelled vocals.

I was at Wacken Open Air last week and when Slipknot came on the big screen everyone started booing. It was beautiful.

Anyway, most of the metal community hates them because bands like that make the general population believe that metal is for angsty teenagers and emos.
Why were Slipknot on the screen, to provoke a reaction or did they actually play at WACKEN?
Your second point sums up a lot of my feelings too, this generation of angsty little shits really gets on my nerves; though most of them listen to Deathcore now.

I actually in a way have more respect for 'mall-goths' or w/e than metalheads. Mall-goths might listen to not so great music & think they're awesome because of it, but in the end they'll grow out of it. Metalheads on the other hand are way past the age when they should have grown out of having a superiority complex just because of the type of music they listen to. They're also more likely to insult everyone elses taste in music where as mall-goths are just ignorant to it. I also think most metal is pretty lame. Guitar solos don't impress me (I'm with Turisas on 'fuck guitar solos') and nothing much can be said for the lyrics in metal songs. It's ok if you don't take it seriously but metalheads do... they're fairly pityful people for the most part =/

Did I just contradict myself for complaining about people who complain about other people's music tastes and then complaining about metal? I didn't mean to. I was making the point that metalheads are no better than any other type of person, even though they all seem to think they are.

I still keep an album or two on my hard drive, but I don't play them as much as I used to back in high school. I'm not saying I stopped liking them, but I think I stopped relating to their music as I grew up.

First album was ok, Iowa wasn't as good.
Haven't really paid any attention to them after that,
Not that I mind them.

Yes you just did. I don't think metal is as elitist as people make out; in fact metalheads generally hate each other, constantly going on about what is/isn't metal and the like rather than being elitist towards other genres. Metal is BY FAR my chosen genre of music but I still like other things like Classic rock or Blues, but the only genres I find myself completely unable to get into are Hip Hop/RnB/Rap, Country and Pop.

To Satanslawyer:

Sorry, of course I didn't mean EVERY fan, I was just generalising based on my experiences with a few of them.

It was part of the Metal Hammer awards. They were nominated for (and won) a prize.
