I used to love this band, but I sort of outgrew it. I still like listening to some of their tracks occasionally, but I suppose I approached this band during a phase when my taste in metal was still undeveloped, in a fledgling state if you will.
In my opinion the self-titled release was great, Iowa was mediocre, Subliminal verses was a slight improvement, and the latest album is crap except for two or three songs.

A lot of the metal community hates nu-metal (the genre Slipknot is from) in general because of its roots. Speaking for me and all my metalhead friends (all of us hate Slipknot) we hate nu-metal as a whole because we all hate grunge/alt. rock, where nu-metal gets its major influence, and then breeds it with metal.

To put it simply, "get your grunge out of my metal".

I used to live in the Middle East and in Abu Dhabi there is a surprisingly large heavy metal scene there and Slipknot were always most recognised. Yet I personally preferred Cradle of Filth.

They're pretty good, not the best, but I like to listen to them sometimes. Especially People = Shit, that song is awesome.

I don't like them. The band itself I could care less about, I listened to them briefly when I was ten, but no longer. Their fans (for the most part) bug me more than the band itself.

I don't think metal is as elitist as people make out; in fact metalheads generally hate each other, constantly going on about what is/isn't metal and the like rather than being elitist towards other genres.
Really, you think so? Weird... true, the bickering about sub-genres is about as big as it gets with metal, but in my experience most metalheads get along fine as long as there's even rudimentary overlap in their tastes. And say what you will, when you get knocked to the ground at a metal concert/festival you don't have to be afraid of getting trampled to death - you'll instantly have about 20 friendly hands helping you up. We might not be the MOST friendly of the genres, but at least we can have a big old laugh at our get-togethers rather than just having a big wank about guns, whores and gangsta businezz.

Not a fan. I kinda liked them to begin with, when I was around 12. But that being said, I think they're only aimed at 12 years olds who hate their dads.

I still like them. Vol3: The subliminal Verses is probably my favourite album. And heck, I enjoy Stone Sour too. I never really payed any attention to what the music community says about particular genres or bands. That way, it's easier for me to have an untainted opinion.

Personally I dislike them. They basically try to... Go with whatever's popular at the time. Now the rise of 'core bands... Whiny vocals... Breakdowns.... Ich. Thank god the singer doesn't whine live. I'll give them that. They certainly are better live than on albums. In my opinion at least. I dislike their fanbase, I dislike their claims of being death metal, I dislike their... "Stanism". :/

I like them, first got into them years ago when their first album came out and something about the music hooked me, since then I have got all their albums. I know alot of people who 'liked' them when I was about 15 because they were known for how they looked and being quite intimidating in sound and appearance and they wanted to be alternative to the norm.

well... when i was in my ickle-gothy-15-year-old phase, i was a huge fan. i still like them, just dont listen to them much anymore..
*shrugs*
i think theyre a great band, but they get a lot of shit from most of the metal community because i think the majority of their fanbase gives them a bad name as a reputable band (like those irritating mall-goths who seem to think drinking goon in parks is cool... or something).
This.

The whole "Maggot" thing discredits the band and makes the fanbase look like snot-nosed immature dicks.

They're a little overrated whilst still being one of my all time favourite bands. They are a great gateway to heavier music too.

I hate when people use the pathetic excuse "Ohh bloo bloo,Slipknot shout and scream and dont make music!"

For the love of god,Corey Taylor has one of the most beautiful singing voices i have ever heard!

Hmn Slipknot aren't really pushing any boundries in terms of originality or musicianship, over all they music if fairly generic and simple, which is why a lot of hard core metal fans don't like them. But i quite like them if i just want to listen to simple, fun uncomplicated music. They are also fantastic live. Its where their simple music style really works for them, since they can actually focus on playing to the audience and interact with them, unlike for example Slayer who just stand there for 2 hours. Slipknot have awesome on-stage presence, and that energy really transfers into the crowd leading to some fantastic concerts. Even if it not near being my favourite band, their concerts are some of the best i've ever been to.

I love the band. I can see why most of the metal community would hate them. I read up on their fan forums when im bored and its 5 in the morning and ive had too much Amp; anyway apparently alot of fans are mad that Corey Taylor (lead singer) made the band Stonesour and used the sort of weaker hard rock crowd to pull more fans to slipknot as opposed to stronger metal heads who have followed the band from its roots. This angered them i guess, cause they come to see Corey Taylor rather than for the actual band, i dunno. I just like their music.
Yeah from what I was told Corey and Jim(the guitarist whose in stone sour and slipknot) spend most of their time with slipknot, when they aren't playing, writing stuff for stone sour. So it seems that they aren't focused what so ever on Slipknot :S
Woah Jim Root is going over to Stone Sour!? Fuckin eh, if that damn cyst of a band hadnt appeared they might have put out an album comparable to Iowa, rather than a the newest POS that they released
Jim has always been in stone sour

Yeah i always thought that metal heads are more tightly nit like one big family since metal heads always help metal heads unlike any other music genre except maybe rock

Perhaps using the word hate was too strong a word; as you've said bickering between them now and then is probably as far as it extends. Metal is a..... for lack of a better word a brotherhood, it is very tightly knit, using the example you've brought up when you're in a pit and you fall over you get picked up fairly quickly.

They are pretty good, but the fanbase is largely shite. However, they are fucking epic live, they definitely deserved the award.

Okay I was on ultimate-guitar recently checking the news in the rock and metal world and There was an article on the Kerrang! awards in which Slipknot won best international and best live band. I read the comments and it seems like the ENTIRE metal community on there hates them, but I want to ask the escapists on their opinion of Slipknot. How do you feel about the nine masked band?
I would not call them the greatest by a long shot..'cough cough SYSTEM OF A DOWN'...but I did see them this year with Trivium and Coheed and Cambria and I must say that the show was absurdly awesome. There was great pit action and if you are in the 'I FU****G HATE YOU ALL!!!' mood, then their sounds provide a wonderful catharsis. They are fine every now and then but I prefer to fill my head with System of A Down, Rage Against the Machine, and Static-X.
