To quote half the thread: I don't smoke cigarettes and I never will. The smell alone disgusts me. I have smoked cigars on occasion but not too often.

My grandma and mom smoke enough for everyone in our family. My great grandmother smoked for around 70 years, and she only quit because the Alzheimers made her forget she smoked. Luckily no one in my family has suffered any illnesses because of it. *knocks on wood*

But to answer the OP, no. I tried once when I was 15ish and I was sick for three days. Not going there again.

You're free to destroy your body however you please, so long as you do it responsibly- in my opinion. I've never been interested in smoking; to me the smell is unpleasant, and the effects of nicotine aren't worth the drawbacks of the delivery system. In short, it's a dumb habit, but do your thing; just don't do it where I have no choice but to smell it.
I generally stand with the smokers when it comes to the trend towards "Nanny State" restrictions on the vice. For me it's almost worth the smoke-filled restaurants and pubs to know people are still willing to stand up for some sort of rights... At least, some of the time.

Consider, my fellow Americans: alcohol kills more innocent bystanders every year than tobacco, but the booze industry doesn't have a tenth of the stigma that the tobacco industry does. (Possibly because they haven't been quite so underhanded, but that's just a guess.)

To reiterate, go ahead and smoke. You smell bad and look stupid doing it, but that's mostly your lookout.

Hello,
I have noticed a large portion of you quoting me, so I decided I would clarify myself.

1. I do not smoke
2. I do not approve of smoking, yet I do not believe in restricting it for those that do.
3. This thread needed some form of counterargument, because it is increadably biased. I understand that a large portion of people have bad experiences with smoking.
4. Finally, I do not know why people smoke, yet there has to be some benefit. If millions of people, maby billions, have been smoking since man created fire, there has to be some reason. Why do people drink or do drugs.

1. Ok.
2. Second-hand smoke. If one of your parents smokes for your entire childhood, your lungs are going to be affected. That's why we restrict it. It smells terrible, too.
3. All Right.
4. There is no benefit. It's just addictive as hell.

Everything I've ever heard about smoking seems to talk about Slippery Slopes and bad medical effects so I think I'll give it a miss.

I'm not really bothered by people smoking though, it's roughly the same idea as alcohol. Use as much as you want, you know what it can do.

Well my dad has just been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to his kidney's and stomach, from excessive smoking and drinking, so I don't think I will ever smoke...
Wake up calls are a *****, like most of my family used to smoke, until something bad happened. Now most of them don't smoke, and I have no intentions to start.

Spoken like a true non smoker.

Except for the addictive part, that's right on the money...However...

The attraction is simple and physiological, cigarette smoke chokes off your oxygen supply, thereby limiting the flow of oxygenated blood to the rest of your system, most importantly, your brain. Said lack of oxygen induces a state of calmness and mild euphoria, thereby making the shitty-ness of everyday life a little easier to take. At least, that's why I stuck with it for almost ten years.

I started when I was 19 and working at Wal-Mart...the stress level was higher than I could have ever imagined. I "officially" quit when my wife got pregnant with my daughter, but I still smoke at work; being a line cook, it's the only way you EVER get a break.

Cigarettes are only addicting. They don't alter your mind like alcohol or mary jane it just simply kills you, ages you, makes you smell bad, gives you cancer, so on and so forth.

I smoke say, two a day? Doesn't sound like much but one after work and another after the dog walk is enjoyable. I smoke loads when I go out drinking saturday nights though. I know I shouldn't, but until I want to quit, no-one's going to tell me what to do.

I NEVER smoke inside. I go outside even if there's a thunderstorm (and there often is). I only want to smell smoke when I'm smoking, not on every damn thing everywhere. I try to be considerate. I remember when there was a rainstorm at the bus stop suddenly and everyone huddled under this chip shop awning. Roughly 14 people there, and the person right in the middle lit up a cig. I could have punched him out myself to be honest.

yes i smoke however, i dont smoke around food or drink, if walking with someone that doesnt or isnt smoking ill hold it in the hand furthest away from them, i never blow it in people faces and i never smoke inside ever if others are. if i choose to be curteous with these things then the last thing i ever want to hear is "YOU KNOW IT KEELS YOU RIGHT" or "thats stupid". if i choose to smoke its my choice and without sounding defensive i dont think that i should get judged as a person on whether i smoke or not.

How odd...as if addiction enough wasn't a significant mind altering experience. Though...I've seen them affect extreme crabbiness in those

Really? Hmm...wonder why people just don't go around choking themselves then? Save a bundle of money not having to buy cigarettes anymore ^^'

I'm too young to smoke, but I might, MIGHT later on in my life. It depends on the stress level of my future job.

No, it's too expensive a habit. I can't afford to smoke especially not in this recession.
