The 'head' of the 'fish' has been cut off, unless a new one is put on soon then the whole 'fish' will rot. Without the analogy, if a new leader isn't found soon then al'quada will disband.
Even if they find a new leader. The man will be younger, less experenced. That is exactly part of what we are doing over there, A few years ago we killed one of there officals in command at the age of I believe 34, They got another one at the age of 26, they are unable to replace with the same quality so they they diminish and diminish down to nothing.

I would think Al'quada has SOME sort of hierarchy.
They probably do, but if the new head doesn't establish themselves soon then they won't have the kind of power or respect they need.
Al'qaeda is not an organization. It is closer to a brand. Just like anyone can set up a McDonalds and run it with very little input from the main organization, only needing their permission and supplies to operate, terrorists will terrorise in the name of Al'Qaeda, whether they have met another member of it or not before. It isn't one 'big fish', it is a lot of independant tiny pirahnas.

Think Anonymous, they operate in a similar fashion.

I'm certain it can provide some degree of closure to at least some of the 9/11 families.
Insurgency is a crazy subject, especially combined with religious extremism. Do I think it will have an impact? Yes, although no where near as much as the little boy or the fat man had on WW2. Do I think it will change anything? Not really, the point of the war wasn't to kill Osama, so the troops certainly won't notice, hell I'm sure there are still tons of Al Qaeda who don't know about the death/ think the U.S. is FOS, even if they do, it won't take long for them to reorganize and continue as always, meanwhile the casualty list will continue to be filled. We're in this until it's done.

As rich hall puts it, the guy is (or was) the face of al-qaeda, but he's not responsible for it all- that's like colonel sanders doing all the work at KFC

When I first head about it?-yes

When I heard it on fifty different threads in the same day?-no

I don't care if it didn't affect the war, dude was involved in 9/11 and killing him means justice, I'll take my victories where I can get em.

He's dead, this shows some things, like dont fuck with Navy SEALs. He has paid for his crimes through his death, we have made but only a step forward with the War on Terror with this, but, someone will take his place, but has this done something, yes.

I care in the sense that he was such a major figurehead of the whole 9/11 debacle and public enemy number one for an entire decade. So having him finally dead is quite interesting.

However, I doubt it's going to change anything. Zawahri will probably just take over the organization and pick up where Osama left off.

So I think it matters from a purely symbolic standpoint but not from a practical one.

Oh of course someoen will take his place it is just a matter of who, how many rivals he killed to get to that position and how weak that will leave the group after the guy who takes over finally consolidates his power.

The number of people who "don't care" is disturbing. This goes to show that too many have a singular method of thinking, in other words they think only in black and white.

Think about what the death of Bin Laden, at the hands of US troops, truly means.

It means we won and he lost. This is a moral boast to the American people.

A moral boast to the populous can have a number of positive effects.

For example, a boast in citizen moral means a boast to the economy. People spend money when they celebrate.

So, would you kindly stop trying to downplay this as nothing and look at the big picture here?

Before, he was the man who spat in the U.S.'s face and walked away.

Now, he's just a dead son of a *****. Any influence he has to his cause as a martyr is nothing compared to his influence still alive.

It's a big deal to the U.S. for obvious reasons. Sorry you don't understand that if you live in Australia.

Your poll and your questions ask different things. Whether or not I care about him having been killed has no real relation, that's worth anything, to whether or not I think it will change anything.

I care that he is dead, I like that. I don't think it changes anything though.

Was that moral boost worth the 14,000 to 34,00 (depending on report) civilian deaths? That is, death, end of life, nothing, nada. Was that boost worth the 7,000 + US soldiers who died?

I'm not saying it's all been for nothing, but it's a hollow victory at best. If you think a brief economic surge is going to make up for that, you're mistaken. He's dead, and it all still happened. End.

I don't give a shit, won't stop all the other splinter cells of Al Quide, I mean look at the IRA.

Although not to sound conspiracy theory-ish, kinda strange they go rid of the body so fast, Islamic law or not.
