Poll: So has an advert ever actually put you off spending money on the product advertised?

This is by far, one of the stupidest reasons to not purchase a game I have ever seen. Some shitty 30 second advert and you're going on about some moral code you have to stand by? Not to mention, it being for a game that is actually pretty great (I finished it maybe an hour ago, and it's one of the best games I've played all year)

its funny, I got Dead Space 2 the day it came out and didnt finish untill just this year

Pretty much this, don't take it so seriously, and it's actually kind of funny, in that so bad it's funny way. Laughing at EA at least a few times a day is good for your health.

I apologize if it has been said, but that is the most obvious example I could think of and I was definitely NOT buying Daikatana after that. I don't even know why they released a demo for that textured and programmed vomit bag.

Not to my current memory, but I can tell you about an add that instantly made me think to my self, "I need this now!"
It was an advert for a tortilla oven bowl that turns ordinary tortilla "slices" (w/e they're called) into tasty taco shell bowls!
best purchase of my life.

Apple Products

I don't like Apple products as a matter of practice. I find their reliance of proprietary services to be detrimental to their consumer base as a whole and their business method of planned obsolescence annoys me.

But it's their ads that really get my dander up. They're self righteous, pretentious and in general completely insufferable.



The Expendables/Expendables 2

Yeah I get the idea that these movies are just action porn, but I won't go see a movie if the trailers are too dumb or too ashamed to tell me what the fucking plot is.
A bunch of has beens, wish they weres and never will bes standing next to eachother while shit explodes isn't enough to have me dedicate 90 minutes of my life to watching it.

This one is cheating because I do still have my Gamefly subscription. But boy do I fucking hate their ads.

Look, we all know that some gamers can be a little bit...entitled and maybe just a tiny bit prone to over reactionary outbursts. But marketing your entire service by painting your potential clientele as the worst examples of their subculture is probably not the best idea.

Advertisements for me just alert me to the knowledge that the product exists if I did not already know. Whether or not I happen to buy the product in the end relies on anything but the advertisement itself.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. All that really affects whether or not I buy something is if I want it. All a commercial really tells me is that it is up for purchase. I've seen commercials that were totally stupid but had a product I wanted. The opposite is true with awesome commercials and products I didn't care for at all.

Honestly I can count on one hand the number of ads I've seen that don't make me hate the product.

I find most commercials fall into three categories.

1 Only idiots buy our products
2 Only assholes buy our products
3 Our product has the addictive and self destructive properties of heroin.

Almost any shaving cream & after shave commercials ever. I'm saddened that people actually fall for it.
On the other hand, I bought Old Spice just for the sake of having Old Spice.
And the smell turned out to be smashing.

well, that was the reason to not buy the game for me, too.
I did, however, lend it from a friend and played it through. It was ok, but not great.
I however thing that was less the game's fault but more the "sequel" fault.
I was just not scared. I then played Dead Space 1 again and i wasn't scared, either.
I probably just have gotten used to the necromorphs. They get old pretty fast.

I can't say I've ever watched an ad that actually changed my mind upon viewing it. But I can think of a few examples where the advertising has helped me come to a decision.

For instance, even though it's been stated before, Dead Space 2, I was perusing the new release section at EB Games, looking for a new title, when I was torn between two, Dead Space 2, and another game I can't remember right now. I was actually reading the back of the case when that "your mom will hate it" ad came on, I watched that ad through, and at the end, after the shock and disgust wore off, put the game down and walked away. I think I just ended up grabbing something out of the used bin, but I honestly can't remember what, even though I can see every game I own on the shelf right now.

There has been other times when advertising has helped me come to a decision about a purchase. But nothing quite so serendipitous as that Dead Space 2 ad.

Thank you commercial for helping me chose between Dr Pepper and Mr Pibb. I'm a guy myself and feel offended by that commercial! Who exactly was that thing made for? I've heard the argument that the 'it's not for women' campaign was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek challenge sort of thing but that doesn't excuse it from being so overtly sexist.

I concur really I dont see many ads now (well I do because they are everywhere) but I dont watch many commercial ads where they make a mini show and try and sell you stuff because it annoys the crap out of me but if I was going to buy it an ad is highly unlikely to put me off and will never change my mind if I wasnt interested anyway. The only time an ad ever really has any sway is if I am in two minds about buying it then it can push me either way but this rarely happens as I just do research on it look at the options then decide in the rare case im still on the fence then the ad may sway me but it usually sways me not to buy it simply because I dont like ads they annoy me to no end and were one of the reasons I stopped watching TV.

And me, I stay away from anything that's advertised with Spotify. I mustn't reward them for ruining my music. Thank goodness I got a paid account a year back.
