Hmmm water is tempting since it's pretty overpowered (ask me why, I dare you :p) But earth or fire suit my personality more. On the other hand, airbending lets you effin fly! So any bending would be great really, I'm not picky :)

Off topic: you know how earthbenders get metalbending and firebenders get lightning? I wonder what airbenders would get...
Waterbenders can also get bloodbending, though I suppose you could also say they ice bend if you don't want to go the evil route. I don't think Airbenders get anything else though, which kinda sucks for them.
The way I see it, they probably DID have one or two special forms of airbending. But everyone who could use it/teach it was wiped out during ozai's airbender extermination. So it's left to our own imagination what their special bending could have been. So far I got: soundbending, tornadobending and poison gas bending lol.
Now.. soundbending, to me, has some interesting potential. Maybe you could throw your voice, or mimic other's voices... That sounds pretty effing sweet to me. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

Off-topic, your Auron avatar makes me a happy girl. Yup yup.

Sokka would be my favorite main character, for his intelligence and resourcefulness. His teacher, Master Piandao, would be my favorite supporting character (very militant).

Firebending would be my bending type. My style of combat is very aggressive, yet disciplined. My personality also matches that of firebending: I can be prone to getting angry and frustrated, but I am always aware of it.

That, and my physical features match that of a firebender (black hair, dark eyebrows, light skin).

Exactly! Or be a human megaphone or make music out of thin air... Yeah it really does have potential. And all of them pretty non-violant which would fit their overall philosophy. What's Dimartino's number? We may be on to something here...

Why thank you. A final fantasy personality quiz once said I was a lot like him, so when the time came to pick a face...

My favorite character is probably...Bumi. He's the best.

And as for bending, I'd go with water bending. I constantly find myself surrounded by water, so it'd be fun to use. Plus surfing would be way better.

I can't believe water bending isn't winning by a landslide. A Blood Bender would take out any other kind of bender in any 1 on 1 fight, it basically makes all other strengths and bending useless unless you are fighting the Avatar specifically. Also, the ability to heal yourself and apparently(?) extend your own life (I am assuming Kitara's insane lifespan has to do with her bending and healing abilities)? Holy crap...

I don't need to go into much detail.

1) Iroh. Iroh is always awesome. He's a rock-solid beacon of old-man wisdom and lightheartedness.

2) Earthbending, simply due to its functionality. Have you ever looked at Minecraft, and thought "Yeah, I wish I could rearrange the world in a short time with my bare hands..."?
Earthbending is basically that.

Only during a full moon. :p

And so far the only people who have been able to bloodbend have died.
That's only because they were badguys and that tends to happen to badguys. Also, the full moon isn't a factor if your good enough, which 'The Legend of Korra' has already shown us.

My nature points me toward being an Earthbender.

That and Toph is my hero. I guess second from that would be waterbending but I'm not... a fluid person? Then again Katara was stubborn as all holy hells so I guess it's just random chance.

But Earthbending. All of the bending styles are rad, don't get me wrong, but it sounds like the one I'd be comfortable performing. Quick, rigid motions, defense and strength.

On the recommendation of every peer I have I purchased the first season, sorry... "book", of Airbender. Four episodes in and I just have no enthusiasm to continue. It gets better, right? Tell me it gets better.
Book 2 is where the meat gets juicy for me. Plow on through, you won't regret it. All these seemingly random oneshot characters? Well... just. Keep watching.

I couldn't hook my friends with the first set of episodes either.

Water for me. It is obviously the most versatile of all elements. Water is as good as you are creative.

Soundbending I see as plausible, Tornadobending seems to much of the same as Aaang had made near tornadoes and such. As for poisonbending I can't see it as the Air Nomads where not fighters but lovers of peace and would thus have no need for it.
Agreed on every account. It was just throwing around some ideas based on what may be possible, not on what would make sense canonically. Although, for all we know there may have been rogue tribes of airbenders who did not agree with the monk philosophy. So they left the temples and developed poison gas bending.

Wow this is fanfic writing itself right here isn't it? :)

Aang is my favorite character, but Earthbending is the best - I played in a table top RPG (modified Dragonblood Exalted if anyone's interested) that was based on Avatar, mainly just the inclusion of elemental bending and things like the Fire Nation being cardinal bad guys seeking to take over the world etc. i was the chief earth bender of the group, and it was always really fun thinking of things to do with the ground under people's feet.

Those three were the only exceptions. Even the person who invented bloodbending wasn't capable of doing so on any night other than a full moon, and Katara, who learned the skill in an extremely short time, wasn't capable of doing so either.

And as mentioned before, the ones that were capable of it have died.

Now that bloodbending has been made illegal, the chances of encountering another one during the series has greatly diminished. :p
You forgot Kitara can blood bend and is not dead. Also, that is an incredibly silly way to judge how good a technique is. Everyone capable of this ability either needed another blood bender to stop them, the Avatar, or they were taken down by extenuating circumstances of several people working together to try and stop them. Those aren't arguments against the viability of the ability, they are arguments for it's power. At no point did the technique simply fail, and as such it still proves to be the strongest and most useful ability.

Earth bending has the most application, and is overall my favorite. As for my favorite character I found Toph to be the most enjoyable of the bunch.

Why? Every element can do things that are not shown in the show that are very over powered. Even applications of what they show is possible are overpowered.

The only really interesting suggesstion there is sound bending.. although technically, all those "higher forms of bending" are just basic bending to an extreme degree, and if an Air bender can feasibly pull a tornado out of his ass, I don't think it matters too much what you call it.

Air Bending can directly counter any other bending (other then terrestrial earth bending, where the earth bender pulls a chunk of earth up from the ground, and perhaps the lightning technique of fire benders) if the bender is strong enough. In our RPG, there was a whole network of things various types of benders could potentially manipulate, all through normal elemental bending. Things like liquid lava could be bent by either a Earth bender, or a Fire bender for instance. They'd use it differently, but both could have some effect over it. We had a wood bender (a concession to Dragonblood Exalted) who's natural domain was effecting the growth of plants and the release and control of natural airborn spores and toxins. The air bender had control over those spores and toxins as well, but less direct (although a powerful air bender can be quite precise with his application of air). In Avatar, Water benders can bend plants as well, so that's another place where our Wood and Water benders collided, but Water benders can only manipulate and move plants, the wood bender could actually cause it to miraculously grow.

Feel free to ignore the Wood bender stuff, I'm sure it'll just derail the conversation, but trust me, its inclusion added a very interesting twist to the environment.

Zuko, he's just a total boss.

I am all Firebending, fast, offense, take the advantage, press until the opponent makes a mistake, and then keep punching where it hurts.

Never, ever back down.

Rogue Air monks would be a interesting story but how would they have survived the Genocide of Air Nomads there would of been some indication to them in the temples and the fire nation would of most likely found em if so.

A fanfiction would have to take place before the war to even be plausible tho im sure it would be a fun read :D

It's always possible that it's just not for you. But you should know it's eerily common for people (including me) to not be impressed with the start, only to love it to bits later. Though the exact tipping point seems to vary from person to person.

Firebending for me. You can create it out of nothing (earth and water manipulate the actual element but are useless without some earth or water to use) and get a consistent power-up during the day (unlike water which waxes and wanes with the moon). Air is pretty cool (who wouldn't want to fly), but too defensive for my liking.

Plus if you're good enough with fire you get those awesome lightning powers.

Absolutely, Aang was the only surviving airbender so it could only take place before both of the series.
