And to my surprise, it actually works. And it's kinda fun.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the motion-control gimmick as much as the next guy, and after seeing all the ridiculous online videos of it being broken (models who can't run, vendors who can turn and shoot, etc.) I expected it to be crap.

Shockingly, navigating the menus with your hands worked perfectly, the track and field game responded well, and Kinect Joy Ride was weirdly enjoyable. I suppose it helped that the people running the booth explained how everything works (running speed is determined by knee height when you run, not how fast you move your feet, etc.), but either way the interface isn't quite as stupid as I thought it would be.

So yeah, now I don't know what to think. Assuming it does everything M$ promises it will, and might actually be fun, would you even consider giving Kinect a chance? Or is it still just a stupid gimmick in your eyes?

p.s. Kinect is at the Texas State Fair - they have two trailers set up all weekend - so give it a whirl if you're in the area.

I already own both a Wii and an Xbox360. Not worth paying money to have one of them try and be the other.

I've only had a go on a dancing game for it, humiliating myself on stage at Eurogamer to Lady GaGa. Good times.

I found it quite fun, not really sure how well I was doing, but, y'know.
Not really worth buying though, hopefully I'll get a chance to try out that Star Wars game for it elsewhere.

I don't know. It depends on who is making which games with Kinect support. I'm not going to buy it for shovelware. I'm glad to hear that it works well though. I was skeptical.

Motion controls aren't so much a gimmick, cause i feel the industry is going to force them into the next generation of consoles whether we want them or not, but they are terrible for gamers and gameplay.
Nothing breaks my immersion more than flailing around wildly in front of a screen. And here i am trying to make my family think games can be art and for sensible people.

Interesting topic. I dunno, to tell you the truth. Most of my favorite games won't even support Kinect, and it's super expensive. I don't have the money to spend on that. I'd rather spend it on a new PS3 (of course, then I'll be even shorter on cash... excellent...)

No. I dont want motion controls, I am okay with motion control as a way to increase sales to casual gamers, but its not for me.

They have an entire shop set up to promo it in dublin city centre, saw it the other day but was too busy to give it a go, definitely going back next week to give it a through playthrough.

Ha, yeah motion controls and "games are art" should probably never be mentioned in the same sentence.

Though Heavy Rain might be an interesting exception...

My problem with it is that most of the games designed specifically for the Kinect look like games I'm really not interested in playing. My parents have no interest in these 'family' games, and I don't have any siblings, so it's not like there's that.

It just sounds like a waste of money to buy a Kinect and get a game I'm not interested in for it purely to try the gimmick.

I don't know. If someone can show me that 'hardcore' titles or more mainstream titles work on the Kinect, then I might consider it, but I'm really not convinced that will be the case. Besides, even if other, conventional titles are proven to work on the Kinect, it just seems like the novelty of swinging my arms around like a Jedi would wear off really fast, and, once I get tired of it, it wouldn't be worth my investment.

Besides, as I've said before, having no physical feedback would get really frustrating really fast. At least vibration and button pressing tells you when you've hit your target, or gotten hit yourself (and an awful lot faster than a visual response does). Put it this way, there's no way you could play something as hectic as COD on a Kinect.

IMHO, if they want a gimmicky controller that will sell based on novelty, they should just bring back the light gun or the joystick.

I'll have to see what games they release for it first. In the meantime, my friend is getting it right away, so I'll just mooch off of him and check it out.

My dad is pestering me to let him buy it (I don't know, I just go with it). I suppose I'll find out soon if its a gimmick. I do prefer to be sitting when playing my games though.
