Due to the fact that I found my old game collection I have been going back and playing some of the games from when I was younger, namely Pokemon on the GameBoy colour and the first 3 Resident Evil games on my PSOne.

I missed out the original as I plan to replay that on my Gamecube at some point but have just finished 2. The controls, to put it politely, are bad. I'm not a huge fan of the camera angles although it adds to the tension in some parts but not always. I do however love the scares and even though I knew they were coming I did honestly jump a number of times even though the graphics are more than a little dated now, proving atmosphere helps build a good horror game. So anyway I have been thinking...

Let's say Capcom are planning to decommision the franchse but before doing so are giving the fans a chance to save it.

The choices are that the game continues to get more action based, the story more convoluted and the scares forgotten about almost completely. ALMOST.

OR

Option 2, we get back the creepy atmosphere and all voice actors play the part without venturing into the world of chesseyness. But this comes at a cost. The new shoulder view camera is scrapped for the traditional cluncky mechanics of the orginal games + 0.

So yeah, what would you do?

I honestly had more fun with 2 than I did with 5 and as such I think I would sacrifice good controls. (RE:6 may persuade me otherwise however)

I just want a game with Resi 4 style controls (Specifically Revelations style) in Raccoon city. Maybe a "stories of Raccoon city" game which is stories of different characters in the outbreak, such as a cop, doctor etc. Basically Outbreak with a actual story in each chapter.

Between those two I can't really say. I'm not a big fan of the old tank controls, but the more modern ones still don't have the controls you need for a full on action game it so obviously wants to be.

The "new" post-RE4 controls are still the same tank controls as the old games. The only thing that changed was the the camera angle, and the ability to freely aim where you wanted. Considering 4 is BY FAR the best game in the series, and 5 was still better than, say, Code: Veronica or Resi 1. I say they should keep it in the new style.

That said, I'd love "Remakes" of the first few games done in the RE4 style, mostly because I really liked the setting, but we do not need to go back to the old static camera angles.

Proper creepiness is in order. And for the record, Resident Evil 4 IS proper creepiness. I'm stuck in the middle of flipping nowhere with a creepy cult of people who seem almost undead and it turns out they've all got WTF parasites growing in them, plus they have hideous monsters roaming around? It's brown trousers time!

I agree. And that fuckin' Dr. Salvador. I had 2 bullets the first time I encountered that chainsaw wielding maniac. I'm terrified of chainsaws as it is. RE4 was the scariest in the series for me. I felt nothing when I played other RE games that came before it. I remember one time in RE4, a fuckin' chicken startled me. That game really knew how to make you feel alone and exposed to all kinds of horrors. And the Regenerators...FUCK THE REGENERATORS!

Insofar as the doc was concerned, I would've liked a few saving throws aganst that jerk.

I'd go for option one, I played 4 until that little freaky gnome guy showed up and then I was pretty much "fuck this, I'm outta here", it made even the retarded Code Veronica shit look less ridiculous. While I thought it played better I just had no interest in the story. The haunted mansion atmosphere of the 1st and the localised zombie apocalypse of the second were just right for me.

As for my favourite, I couldn't decide between 1 and 2.

I'm going with option one, just so I can take it to the most insane places possible.

i pick option 3, wherein they continue trying to find that perfect blend of 3rd person action and horror. sure there were some bumps and imbalances toward the action side along the way, but im holding out that RE6 could find that sweet spot

The Resident Evil Remake was goddamn brilliant. That's all there is to say about that. I, for one, would return RE to its roots.

I think 4 was the best, seeing as I've only played 4, 5, and Raccoon City. 6 is showing some promise because it's bringing back Ada, so we'll see. But, if the series was left in my hands, I would do one thing: Bring back Rebecca. Even though I've never seen her in-game outside of Mercs and only know her from reading about her, she's my favorite character. So yeah, I'd make her the main character.
As for the villian, I'd make it that one lady who was 'unaccounted for' in that list you found in RE5. I think her name was Jenny or something? Anyway, you find a list of former Umbrella employees. One is in prison for life and is no longer considered a threat, the rest are dead, whether by accident or 'accident', but there was one girl on there whose location was unknown. So yeah, so something with her.

REmake was phenominal, I was genuinly scared by that game when I played it, RE4 was too actiony for me. There is nothing scary about dragging a suitcase of guns around a third world Spanish town.

I would go with option 1.

I'd like to see something with the mechanics more along the lines of the early versions of RE4. More control than the the pre-4 games, but not so action oriented of the later ones.

Or just RE4 style with better atmosphere and less actiony.

I like the ridiculousness of Resident Evil, personally, and I had a lot more fun with RE5 than with any of the others, even RE4, so definitely option 1 for me!

Well first I'd make sure the underlings know how to spell properly.

Then I get them to try and make it like Resident Evil 4, because I liked that one.

Or I'd just bin it and get them to work on Dead Rising, because the Capcom zombie series I enjoy more!

Ummm, can't we take Option 2 without undoing years of learning from previous mistakes in control schemes?

To me, setting and theme has always been the most consistent thing about the RE series, although evidently some of the hammier characters like Wesker and Chris have gotten strong followings. If you make a game where there is a virus or similar outbreak that creates zombies and various nastier monsters unleashed by an (initially) human villain which you must survive somewhere long enough to stop, people will already know the game without even looking at the title, even if all the characters are different.

For me Resident Evil 4 was the best, the gameplay was solid and varied and I could see where I was aiming. I didn't mind escorting Ashley all that much she knew when to duck, hid in a box when I told her to and managed to get kidnapped every once in a while to give me a break. I was a bit disappointed that there were no zombies and that some enemies used guns, but it was still a very good game.

I played the first two Resident Evils a little bit and I still have RE2. I liked the atmosphere and the zombies but I really hated the controls combined with the static camera.
I never made it very far in both games because I had trouble making out where I was aiming before getting eaten, and the ink ribbon system got in the way of my habit of save spamming.

I've started playing RE5 co-op with a friend a couple of months ago. but we can only manage to play through it one chapter at a time before one of us turns of the xbox to do something fun together.
Last time he was over he brought RE5, but we didn't even bothered and watched Firefly instead.

And if I could make a new Resident Evil,

I'd make a single player only more horror focused resident evil with the T and G-virus. As for gameplay I'd use over the shoulder gun play of the newer games, and the inventory system of RE4.
I always hated the ink ribbon system from the early games so infinite saves.
Also give the player less ammo, add some more puzzles and put in an unstoppable monster that chases you around every now and then.

I'd bring back the mysterious merchant from RE4 because I really liked him, make Leon the protagonist and in the end Albert Wesker turns out to be alive and behind it all.
I don't know, because the Wesker you killed in RE5 turned out to be a clone all along or something like that.

It's a toss up between Resi 2 and 4, I even enjoyed Code Veronica. (I know you ran out of room on the poll)

I think Claire is my favourite character in the series and I'm sad to see she's not back for 6. I have a bad feeling resident evil 6 has become victim to the COD brodudes :p but I guess we will have to see if it's true survival horror or not. At least you can move and shoot this time. xD

If I was in charge I'd make ammo scarce have an oppressive atmosphere and try to stay away from it becoming a shooter. I think Resi 4 was just about the right balance.

I choose

Also a new dino crisis game would be awesome :p Even it's name is cheesy goodness.
