... And I'm wondering what I should do about it. It didn't RROD, the disc reader just broke. So now I'm looking for advice. Should I try to replace the disc reader, or should I replace my Xbox with a new slim? Could I put my 360 Elite hard drive in the slim? Where can I get a replacement disc reader?

For added discussion value, share your console/computer horror stories.

EDIT: I solved the problem by using an "Opti Disc" lens cleaner. No longer needing advice, but I appreciate the help.

Buy a Ps3.

My 360 broke once. I sent it away to get fixed. They just sent me back a new one. That one died too.
Make better hardware Microsoft!

Looks like I'm not alone. My 360's disk reader is broken too. No matter, my Xbox Live Gold Membership only had like 2 weeks left. So it's PC time for me :D

As for your..... does the thing still have it's warranty?

What about the new Xbox360 slim? I don't think They've gotten RROD.

I have a PS3. The Xbox is mainly for my brother, I'm trying to help him out.

Sell, the 360, get a slim. Its more reliable than the old 360, quiet too.
I was thinking that, but I still have a few months of XBL and I don't want to lose all my save games. Is the Xbox Elite hard drive compatible with the slim?

Only problem I've had was my old PC dying out after about 10 years. It was a reasonable amount of time and I had already gotten a new one, so not that bad.

That's a pretty bad idea, actually. I'm sure that if he noticed it breaking, there were definitely some games he wanted to play on it. So, if he buys a PS3, that'll leave him with a bunch of useless Xbox disks.

Also, his profile says he already has one.

I've seen some reports of hardware failures on the new ones, though it's just a light now, not a ring. Though they do seem lots better than the older models

I don't know for sure, but I'm almost positive the HDD from your old elite, won't work with a slim. MS might have a cable or method of transferring the data though I'd look into that.

What is wrong with it? If it isnt reading the disks when you put them in, just open it, take the disk out, close it, open it after a minute or two, put the disk back in and it should read. I had that problem with mine. If it isn't this problem, I can't help, sorry.

My last console did RROD but i got it back within 2 weeks, so not really a horror story. I now have a slim and it is epic. I suggest you buy one of those.

Of note. Not sure of which brand or specific type (if there are any differences in them) A USB connectible disc reader seems to actually work for the 360. My friend up in Boston had a Disk drive break on his, simply plugged in a disk reader and is chugging away.
And no, the new 360's have no place for old hard drives, you'll have to use a flash drive to move things.

EDIT: Some punctuation fixes.

Can people just accept that the 360's problem was only with 1 or 2 batches, most were fine!

Speaking as a PC gamer this is my view.

However I do have a PS3 to play with friends online as not all of them game on PC. But it has never broken so lets just sweep that under the rug.

[sarcasm]Wow, I didn't know that RRODs are caused by something so innocent and simple. I'm glad MS fixed that problem. Now I can buy an X360 Slim with no worries :D [/sarcasm]

On a serious note, repairs would probably be the cheapest way to go.
No console deaths yet, in my 8 year career of gaming. Did have a HDD die on me, with nothing backed up. But it wasn't too bad, all I lost was Guild Wars stuff, and that can just be patched back in.

Ps3's wear out just the same as 360's, depending on usage statistics and how you take care of them (or not) and your discs (or not).
3 360's here and all 3 have worked since (with 1 exception*) I bought them. 1 is 3 years old, 1 is 2 and the 3rd is 6 months.

*Exception note: lightning struck a pipe in the house and also fried a bank of electronics including a surge protector and 1 xbox, which Microsoft FIXED FOR FREE.

You should NOT pay for a replacement. Anyway, your 360 elite hard drive is completely incompatible with the Xbox 360 Slim. That is one of the MANY ways they get you.

When a product like a games console breaks on you what incentive would Microsoft ever have to improve quality and durability if people just go out and buy ANOTHER system? That only encourages them as it's more money in the bank and artificially inflates the perceived popularity of the system (i.e. it's not that so many people bought 1 console, it's than ended up buying 2 or three)

Even if you buy a pre-owned/refurbished model, less on that market moves more to buy new.

If a company fails on you for reliability DO NOT BUY FROM THEM AGAIN! Not again till they have both Openly and candidly Addressed the problem, promised to solve it and it has been independently verified that they have solved the problem, neither of which Microsoft has done. Extended warranty is a sticky plaster on a bullet wound.

It's that simple. If we don't do that and keep buying sub-standard crap then the entire principal of capitalism for progress is undermined, then it becomes all about capitalism for "brands". Other competitors will let standards slip to save money and know they can get away with it like MS does. The consumer must hold these companies responsible.

I suggest you try a different platform that doesn't have Microsoft's reputation for unreliable hardware. PS3. PC. Even Wii for gods sake.

This could be the ideal time to migrate to PC as PC hardware is so cheap yet so much more powerful than 360 or even PS3. In the mean time I'd suggest buying a cheap console from the previous generation that you didn't own and catch up on all the exclusives you missed.
