Poll: So my PS3 broke...

I was in the middle of a quite fun game of Uncharted 2 multiplayer when my first-generation 80-gig PS3 suddenly shut down and displayed the light sequence for hardware malfunction. I've owned it since November of '06, so the warranty is up and any repairs will come from my own pocket. So, my question is; Should I have the old repaired (at around $150-$200), or should I get a new PS3 for $100 more, with more memory but no backwards compatibility? And, so there's some discussion involved, what was the worst time that equipment failure happened to you(if at all)?

Repair the old one I say.You get to keep the backwards compatibility with it.

Repair. Cheaper, you dont lose any vital info, and you get to keep your backwards compatability, which i would kill for.

Plus, if you really wanna get more memory, just go and buy a new hard drive. Its dead simple to upgrade memory for the PS3.

Bother technical support first. Try and see how much you can get from them before wasting money. If it isn't actually smoking then see if you can find out if there's actually a software error.

Well there was a family computer that died, and it was old, and nobody made parts for it, and the motherboard was fried, but we were able to get a faster one and move the memory onto it. Desktops keep getting cheaper and cheaper...

I have a backwards compatibility ps3 and I'd most likely just pay to get it fixed if it broke. So I say just fix the old one. =]

When my 360 started overheating and was damaged (RRoD), it was about two years past the warranty, and the repairs were free.
