I've recently restarted Monster Hunter Tri (I play Sns mostly, or bowgun for shits'n'giggles), and I was wondering. As an Sns user, I know that it is 'pertinent' that I basically get a sword from every elemental tree, because elemental damage is where Sns really shines. But here's the thing, in my last play through, I had poison, paralyse and sleep swords, and obviously parlayse is insanely useful for cutting tails or for online co-op, and sleep is great for healing/sharpening time and getting massive damage from bomb-abuse, but poison seems strangely under-powered.

Anyway, to the point, I looked on google and couldn't find anything(I'm bad at googling so if I missed something obvious, be gentle) so I wanted to ask you all; does poison prevent health regeneration as well as doing DoT? And if it does, does this make it more useful than people give it credit for, or does it forever remain inferior to the otehr elements/statuses?

EDIT: Oh right, discussion value ... okay, gimme a second to think ...

Okay, attempt number one! From any game, what is your favourite element and why? (Name the game and what the element does)

My favourite element from a game is generally ice (for the 'slow' effect), or fire from Borderlands for the obscene DoT.

I'm afraid I have to ask; what is Final Fight (I have a knack for being deceptively uncultured. It surprises a lot of people when they realise I know next to nothing about sub-cultures I seemingly belong to)

For clarity, final fight, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fight, is a beat'em up with a character in it called Poison. People then freak out because Poison is a transsexual woman and that's apparently a big deal. Since the thread isn't about this though, I don't feel it's appropriate to go further.

As it is this thread doesn't seem to be about much. I challenge you to a duel!!!

Kinda.
Poison was changed to a man because apparently beating up a woman is morally objectionable.

This didn't actually change her character model at all, however. You can still see her cleavage when you punch her.

If one follows the common conventions, poison delivers steady damage over a long period of time (and tends to be the deadliest in absolute terms), ice tends to be the weakest but generally confers some sort of defensive advantage (armor, slowed enemy attacks), fire is purely offensive and is generally the most effective means of committing atrocity, earth tends to be largely defensive in nature (armor, stuns), wind is is likewise defensive (generally crowd control), and water is generally relegated to healing.

Most games, however, just use poison/fire/ice as it offers a reasonable mix of offensive and defensive elements. As a rule, I tend to think that effective murder power is a better way to resolve pesky defense issues and thus opt for fire.

Man, this thread got off-topic quick.

I'm not sure if it does, but based on my experience, I'd guess it doesn't. It's nice for getting through a few annoying abilities, though.

In most games my favourite element is ice because it is usually related to crowd control. For example on WoW a frost mage is able to dish out absurd amount of control with its frost novas and cone of cold, and still able to use polymorph because none of them do any damage over time. What this results in is a mage being able to stack up 2-3 debuffs on a target and then follow it up by a polymorph which takes a while to dispel (in pvp, I swear none of the classes feel very special playstyle-wise in PvE, it's just 'do your rotation')

So it's mainly due to the control. I also like shatter physics where you are able to do extra damage to frozen targets (usually involves freezing your target, following up by another spell to shatter the enemy completely). I love how lethal it is when done with another person.

I never noticed poison doing much, and I do not think it prevents regen. Though I do not know to much, always a hammers man in tri. Gunhammer is awesome.

As for other games, I like the MTG card Wolfbriar elemental. Because wolf is an element.

My first thought was the Ultima series (or the Gold Box series or any other old school RPG). God, poison sucked in those games.

Mmmm coming from a guy who have play Monster Hunter Tri (I think you can re edit the thread title) I think poison weren't that great. I think they only chip off their health a bit but I guess it all count toward slaying/capturing it?
The only think I remember about using poison is using the poison knifes against Uragaan since it can get poison easily.
Don't take my words for it since I haven't play that game for ages (I quit once I got rank 100 online and got the Alatreon spear. The game got repetitive for me to play anymore).

I read the poll before the OP, and I thought this was about making a (possibly) quite regrettable decision...

Anyway, I have no idea about Monster Hunter Tri, so I'll give some completely useless advice:

Yes! Use poison! It'll be totally worth it. I know exactly what I'm talking about.

Well that must have been confusing when you got to the bit about a monster's weak element.
