Call me a pessimist but I get really annoyed when I see these facebook status updates, groups invitations, and pages about some asinine meme that is meant to draw attention.

A good recent example is the "I like it on the..." thing where girls will post where they like their purse, but not mention the purse. ( example: I like it on the couch ;] )This is designed to imply a sexual innuendo and it acts like a rain catcher to collect pure, distilled attention. Most guys will obviously wonder wtf she means. I have never seen first hand a moment where the girl explained the true meaning behind the message, so its up to the guys to spread it around.

Apparantly its about Raising Awareness to Breast Cancer. I have so many problems with this I don't know where to begin. By not explaining it you just ruined its only purpose, and turned it into attention whoring (that's more or less a synonym for "raising awareness").

Raising awareness IMO is a feel-good tactic that prevents people from doing real helpful things. Its like when you had to clean up the classroom after an arts-and-craft session, and that one kid stands there and points at all the bits of paper on the ground so others can see then, and he truly thinks he's helping. That's annoying right?

When everyone does some silly thing as a group to whore attention, they feel good about it. This what I have a problem with

And before someone says "well what have YOU done for charity you goddamn saint?"
Let me just say that I admittedly don't actively donate enough for philanthropy to be one of my main qualities, but at least I'm confident enough to admit that I'm not helping much; and not dumb enough to delude myself into thinking I am.

Anyone else on the Escapist feel the same way? I hope this thread doesn't fall flat on its ass, I just like to call out bullshit whenever I can.

Bottom line is, if you have any cause you want to promote, your options are to "raise awareness" about it or solve it directly. Solving it directly it beyond the means of many people. Consequently, if they feel that intently about it, they'll try the former route.

I feel the same way. Especially aggravating is the "Gay Silence Day". Where people duct tape their mouths shut in order to "raise awareness" of the struggle LGBTQ people face.

Except, you're going to tell people what's going on by duct taping your mouths shut? How?

Sometimes raising awareness actually does what it's supposed to do, but not often enough.

Of course there is no "expected amount" when it comes to donating, all that matters is that you did directly contribute.

The inherent problem with charities is that its hard to feel good when you actually did something! If you donate, is it not enough? Does stopping mean you suddenly lose interest? Was it selfish to just donate $10? So much guilt comes out if you over think it.

What if you donate once and think you're done your quota? That you did your part? I don't like that mindset either.

I guess there's really no winning.
