Poll: So where do you stand on Anonymous and why?

My goodness, you people.
Anon is not a large organised group of people. It's just a bunch of people from 4chan; which I should mention has many boards other than /b/ and /v/. They're not a large group of people bent on raising hell.

Anyone remember the 'You Done Goofed' girl? It was an image meme featuring a crying girl and a father yelling incompetently at the internet through her webcam. It was set up to look like the stereotypical redneck father vainly shaking his fist at 'them durned kids.' A story of Anonymous, the proud upstanding geeks being able to laugh at the stupid hillbilly who can't beat them up over a wireless connection. Except that it all started when Anonymous make lewd sexual suggestions to an elementary school girl, including asking her to strip, and then started to send her death threats. The girl ended up under police protection while her father made his ultimately useless rant to try desperately to get them to leave his little girl alone.


No, they attack the weak and the innocent. SO that's why I don't like them.

Whilst I prefer the old fashioned way of discovering memes, http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/jessi-slaughter will suitably educate you on the matter. She is not so innocent as you seem to suggest. I think this sums her up fairly well "She is also quoted as saying ?Any type of fame, I?ll take.? at the beginning."

They do not just attack the weak and innocent. Quite frankly they don't care that much often enough. Any request to cause an attack will likely be met with "Not your personal army." Stop being so bloody afraid of 4chan, all of you. It is not a secret club, it is not hard to understand that it is little more than any other conglomeration of people albeit behind a mask.

Remember the famous quote: ?Ethics is what you do when no one is looking.? And on 4chan, they may be looking at you, but they cannot see you. Of course if some of you actually went there and stopped judging people on more than hearsay, well you might form more justified opinions.

I personally feel like if they could strike a deal with the government and come out of anonmity to the government only then they could be a real organization. It just seems like they NEED rules and NEED screening processes or else they open themselves to fire from people who my not support their real goals idk my logic is probably quite flawed

I haven't quite made up my mind on them yet. They've done some incredibly good things for the world. However they've all done some really dickish things. They seem to like to resort to cyber bullying people which I don't really like. So yeah, not on there side, not opposing them. Don't bother me and I won't bother you. Though if they're taking on the WBC then I'll rally to their side for this campaign.

I think they're an interesting social phenomenon.

Normal person + anonymity = huge douchebag.

Normal person + anonymity + animal abuse = awesome, righteous shitstorm.

So yeah, uhm, they do good sometimes, they stand for utter and indiscriminate open speech... I like 'em, for the most part. And the shit where they do stupid stuff? Trolls are everywhere on the internet, and if you don't learn to deal with them you'll have a rough time here.

Were talking about the group that rallied behind wikileaks and recently had a fake scuffle with the WBC but they have also been blamed for some horrible stuff on 4chan and facebook. pretty much what the other people posted sums it all up.

I don't understand how anyone can have an opinion on "Anonymous" if "Anonymous" isn't even a consistent group.

Anonymous is simply whoever happens to be on 4chan's /b/ at any given point in time, which is far too big and ambiguous a group of people to put a label on. There's a reason they're called "Anonymous."

Some people started making some troll posts here and there on her videos, so she made a retaliation video where she said something along the lines of "Ima bust a cap in your bitchasses" or something about shooting people that was heavily coated in profanity while she went on about how awesome she was. So /b/ trolled the shit out of her. She couldn't take it and her dad came in with the funniest rant I've ever seen while she cried about how people were being mean to her when she didn't do anything. Honestly, anon went to far, but she deserved some form of punishment. Besides, it was for the lulz.


Anyway, rant aside, I enjoy the antics of anonymous and /b/. And I may or may not have helped in the DDoS attacks in support of Wikileaks.

If thats the case then I agree that they went too far but what you said is typically what gets left out when theres a story about underage girls and creeps

I support Anonymous (and slightly off topic...Wikileaks) the more light that is shed on a situation, the better. Anyone who keeps major corporations and asshat politicians on their toes is a winner in my book.

Naturally, as with anything, I do not agree with everything they do. Blind faith in anything only leads to your own downfall.

But in general...my hat's off to you, Anon!

I think they're a moderator of sorts. If somebody gets out of hand on the internet, it's nice to have a body willing to say "NOPE" and smack them down with all the dispassion of someone swatting a fly.

Still, I do think they can go out of hand- but for the most part, their escapades have been relativley innocuous as of late. Attacking people that torture animals? Cool by me. Attacking Westboro Baptist? Still cool. Attacking companies that target filesharers? Eh, slightly less cool, but I'm not exactly up in arms over it.
