This is something I notice around here, and my most stupid post ever.

You know when someone has a complaint about the game, They will most likely say It's take it' "story too seriously."
To me, that kind of like an wall banger. How can they tell the story without taking it seriously? You have to be serious, because god helped you if the Development teams screwed it up.

What I'm trying to say, are story developers subjected to double standards?

That's kind of like "an wall banger"? WHAT????

Anyway, I think the complaint that a game takes its story "too seriously" is a pretty dumb argument, and I find games which try to parody themselves usually fail pretty hard.

Of course, it's impossible to please people. They take it too seriously and they get a complaint, they don't take it serious and they get a complaint. You can't win with the masses.

I think I'm taking your post too seriously...

No, seriously though... stories can be stupid, funny or serious. It doesn't matter. Some people like stories that are serious, some people don't, and some are seriously stupid.

Seriously.

I hope this doesn't make me sound thick but I'm having trouble understanding your point.

Yes I do understand though that it's stupid for someone to accuse a game of taking itself too seriously because if the game wants to tell a story it has to do it as strongly as possible. If it felt like it wasn't emphasizing everything to make it as engaging as possible people would point that out as well.

Unless it's a parody you should try to take your story seriously, even comedy based games like Brooeutal Legend have a substantial degree of seriousness. Otherwise you end up coming off as not caring about the thing You are writing.

People like different things. It may sound silly to say that they shouldn't take the story so seriously to us, but maybe it makes sense to others

I see this come up a lot actually. People seem to think that if any aspect of a game sounds slightly funny or out of place, it should be treated as such. Meanwhile, perhaps the intent was just that it is actually normal in the setting that was written, and as such, there is no way for it to not be taken seriously in context.

For instance, because I am bored. Lets say I imagine a world and make something out of it, be it game or book. The protagonist is a gun toting badass. The main villain sends an army of mutant, man eating giraffe type things to kill said protagonist. And I write it off in all seriousness, as a dire battle for the hero, with an epic victory. There is major death and all, a member of the protagonist's family is eaten by one of said creatures. Just to add to the idea.

Now the common perspective of that idea will undoubtedly be that I'm taking the story too seriously, as its far too silly to actually be an epic battle of sorts, with a sad loss. At the same time, in perspective of the world I wrote, it was a life or death situation, with fearsome beasts to these people, and was a vital victory on the quest to stop the antagonist's quest for world domination/destruction/whatever.

It's a tv Trope term, I'm a Troper.

Anyway here is the def:

"The origin of the term is attributed to Samuel Goldwyn, who described a script as having made a "Hell of a bang, when I threw it against the wall." However, another term for it is something so mind-numbingly riddled with Fridge Logic or Insane Troll Logic that it's absolutely painful."

I voted "Yes" so each option would have three votes and would be at 33.3%.

I don't really understand your question though. It's just that I couldn't resist the urge to make the options feel equal. They even gained a cool pattern to boot!

The idea I got was that people claim script writers take ideas seriously in movies and games and books too much, according to people. But if they stopped doing so, people would tell them they need to take it more seriously. This applies to both plots, and what the style of the material is.

At the end of the day, someone will complain about something. People are stupid that way and feel the need to complain about anything.

Only by the stupid are they subjected to any type of double standard. And as everyone knows, arguing with the stupid will turn you stupid.

Have I been taking The Three Stooges and one of my all-time favorites, The Great Dictator, too lightly?
Was the former a grim meditation on casual violence among so-called friends and was the latter the most broken Holocaust movie ever made?

As a matter of fact, Mad World nor Day of the Tentacle or any thing by Tim Schafer or Hideki Kamiya for that matter is meant to be taken seriously.

Am I even understanding the original post correctly in the first place, by which you claim or ask if all games are meant to be taken seriously rather than as escapism?

I have a teensy little favor to ask. Please lay off of the Trope Talk outside of the TV Tropes site. As it is, a staggering number of those things are so decayed that you can see daylight through them. Wall Banger is looking like a shuffling corpse that should be put down then bought back right!
