'No plans for a new console' right now doesn't translate to 'there will never be another Sony console.' Let's face it, we don't need new consoles right now anyway.
Agreed. What we need are better games. It's not hard to come up with an original story. There doesn't even need to be many gameplay changes from other games. Red Dead Redemption was basically GTA4, only with horses instead of cars. Extremely little was changed from GTA3 to 4. The Halo games have actually downgraded what you can do. The only reason we ever need new consoles is because we reach out graphical limitation. And I like to believe that a majority of gamers would buy a game with average graphics but with an original story, deep characters and decent gameplay, than a FPS (That plays exactly like CoD) with as much hype as CoD, piss all characters and a story that makes no sense, a four hour long single player mode with multiplayer, and looks photo-realistic graphics.

I don't want any of the companies to pull out of the market. Competition is good, as it forces companies to stay on their toes and actively try to compete with each other.

I also enjoy seeing how some a lot of these comments have devolved into fanboys defending their console of choice.

Hahahahahahaha. I just came to laugh at the idea that Nintendo can't/never was hardcore. There is reason there is a whole slew of games that are known to be of the order of difficulty Nintendo hard.

Now to be on topic since I came no Sony most likely won't be pulling out and there have not been many rumours. It was even their original plan to stick with the PS3 for awhile after the next gen starts which while not ideal is possible.

Wouldn't be that bad. I'm sure every person here has some sort of Microsoft device. Honestly who cares, all Sony and Microsoft ever did was prove that stupidity=$$, and, i also have both a 360 and a ps3 but im a 360 fan, never really like the feel to the PS3.

I don't like Sony. They have done stupid mistakes like storing unencrypted personal informations ready to be snatched up by hackers, their attitude both towards their competition and their customers make them look like asses.

However the less companies are involved the more control they will get over the market and I don't want to see Microsoft getting more power than they already do. They got a lot of influence on the PC front making us upgrade OS for every new DX version is one example. I don't want to see them get more control over the console market too. If they have enough opposition they will have to fight for their customers and fight to get their support and approval. If Microsoft and Nintendo becomes the only companies and Microsoft got the more powerful console developers will pick that system for their biggest titles which will give Microsoft too much control for my taste. I would love to get Sega back on the console market just to get more healthy competition though that's unrealistic with their recent failures and lack of funds. Not to mention DreamCast which didn't make it...

Competition DRIVES innovation. With only Microsoft leading the way, the industry is doomed to stagnation.

If this happened, I don't think Microsoft would abuse their power too much. That being said, I think it would be a bad thing if Microsoft was the only console on the market that appealed to "hardcore" gamers. The console war was stupid yes, but at least it encouraged a little bit of innovation on Sony and Microsoft's part.

I hope you love Linux, because the Microsoft Anti-Trust charge expired not long ago.
Meaning that you can expect MS to go right back to that forced integration bullshit that landed them in hot water to begin with.

(specifically; Windows Explorer code being directly integrated into their Internet Explorer; Imagine not only being unable to uninstall the liability that is IE, but IE becoming the Shell of your entire OS. Otherwise, stick to W7/Vista/XP or find a good flavor of Linux fast.)

It won't happen since Xbox has the least support of the three while they all have a place in the race here (North America) in places like Japan Xbox can't even get off the shelf to the point they won't even sell the system in stores.

There has been a lot of rumors circulating about one of the big three console companies dropping out of the console race next generation. Nintendo has already announced that it will be making the Wii U, and MS has been slowly leaking information about their next console. This leaves sony as the one who is, at this point, most likely to pull out. I could personally see this happening because, as far as lifetime sales go, Sony is in third.

This leaves just Nintendo and Microsoft in the race. Concerning that we all known Nintendo is in a secluded little league of their own, that leaves Microsoft to handle the hardcore video game market next generation.

So...How bad do you think that could turn out? I've heard this sort of thing referred to as the "one console future" before. You may ask, how could this possibly be bad? Its easy, with just Microsoft holding onto the hardcore market, they can begin to charge whatever they want for their products. In this situation, their is no major alternative for console gamers but to pay whatever price Microsoft sets. Essentially, without competition, Microsoft would be able to do whatever they want.

I would like to think that MS wouldn't do something bad with its power once it had the monopoly, but history would tell me otherwise.
Well if history repeats itself , a new contender may arrise . There once was nIntendo and sega , with the nes and masters , then the snes and genesis . Then came sony , making it three , with nintendo and sega , n64 , dreamcast and ps1 . Sega died , and then came microsoft , returnig the balance , with game cube , xbox and , ps2 .

Therefor my theory is , if sony dies , well someone will take it's place.

Three things I see here:
1. Something tells me they'd get in an identical heap of trouble if they tried that.
2. If they do what you describe above, Windows 7 will prove just as capable of sticking around as XP did following the Vista disaster.
3. Barring a mandatory inclusion as part of the O/S, I doubt Microsoft will manage to take over significant market share this way. Chrome and Firefox are the browsers of choice for just about anyone that cares (and that hasn't heard of Opera), and with the Internet having exploded, Microsoft will find itself in much the same position it was in with Bing - launching a competitive at best product into a field of strong opposition and a market that knows the difference. Money and default inclusion won't save MS' bacon this time around, I think.

I respect Nintendo as a company, but let's please not pretend that Nintendo makes games for "our" crowd, ie: hardcore gamers.
I thought of myself as a "hardcore gamer" (Plays games extensively, enjoys complex games from many different genre's et cetera), but seeing as I play Nintendo (and some 3rd party) titles from time to time and enjoy them very much, I'm apparently just some dirty low-life casual.

Considering I switched from 360 to ps3 due to hardware failures id say it would be pretty bad for me since i swore i would never buy one of thier consoles again.
They fixed most of the problems the 360 had with the elite versions they rolled out not to long back. I think this generation we're gonna be seeing a lot less failures, seeing how they mostly got their shit together with it.

At least, that's what I'm hoping.

But yeah. If Microsoft is planning on shoving another subscription fee under our noses just to get online, I think I'll try to convince a few friends to wait for the PS4. Because that shit was ridiculous.

1. They may actually get away with it.
They have more (realistic) numerical competition now from Apple for starters (sadly, not quite as much as I'd hope from Linux, but it's getting to the point where the practicality may finally match Windows for an untrained user).
But more importantly; Apple isn't a plaintiff this time.

2. Yeah, we have Windows 7 and and some lingering XP (and Vista, if desperate, which I am ironically running right now...yeah, I actually tamed Vista. Don't ask me how.) to combat it's inevitable inclusion in Windows 8.

3. They generated a lot of revenue from ad-hits by "stealing" certain kinds of error-control traffic (DNS reroutes to their help website) back when XP was still on top. I do agree that Bing (fortunately) never took off, because it's a complete piece of shit from what little time I've spent using it (it took ONE SEARCH before it installed Adware onto the browser; it was a university computer, and not mine, so I didn't have a choice in the matter).

They have more competition now, but I'm remaining cautious as ever; some things you do not forgive, or forget. And Microsoft's absolute ruthlessness is just one of those things for me.

...You're joking, right? Right?
Second'ed

Seriously, Nintendo may not have a "hardcore" image but that doesn't mean they can't compete against Microsoft. Nintendo has apparently promised to appeal to the hardcore crowd with the Wii U (oxymoron) more and Microsoft might be trying to appeal to the "casual" gamers with the Kinect.

At the end of the day, aren't we all just consumers?
I think he was referring to, you know, PCs.

What about Apple. They could easily snatch up some money from making an i-console. I can see it happening.
