No this is not a versus thread so be still oh twitchy fingered ones.
There are usually 2 types of soldier, you have your genetically engineered super soldiers, ala Spartans and then you have your soldier whose abilities rely on the good old Bioware code of being one of the most skilled soldiers in that universe, ala Spectres. This does not necessarily mean Spectres in general but the idea that the protagonist is born to be a hero and has nothing to do with genetic modifications. So people such as Commander Shepard, Revan, The Gray Warden etc.

I prefer those Spectres over Spartans, it kind of adds a nice touch to that universe. Your character isn't amazing for being in a programme with 10,000 other people, your character is renowned because of determination, peserverance and a touch of luck. That's not to say that some super soldiers don't (just look at Master Chief, you don't become the last Spartan without having skill and luck).

So escapists, which do you prefer and why.

Spartans arent just awesome because of their mods, spartan were selected as children because thay showed amazing genetic traits. E.g John was 10 but had the body of a 15 yr old. they had parents who had high IQs and good physical abilities. Dr. halsey herself says that even if they werent selected to be spartans they whould have become heroes of the war anyway. they just had the genetic traits to be great.

Spectres were born to be good soldiers, for them it's all skill and initiative. Spartans are just your run of the mill super soldier that can was made by scientists, nothing special about them.

Spectres all the way.

Natural greatness vs. Forced greatness. Hmm.

Depends what it's for I suppose. If it's just a straight up "Here is some combat, fight your way through to the other side" you would want the Spartan.

If it's a more general "Here is an objective, which requires charisma and combat, as well as deductive reasoning" and being a general bad-ass, you would want the Spectre.

I suppose the ideal would be a Spectre who had some Spartans kicking about as fire support.

Difficult to say. For all the amazing Spartans out there, there is only one with the skills and luck to save humanity. Same can be said for the Spectres. In a straight fight, I'd go with a Spartan (Master Chief generally "lone wolfs" missions, whereas even Shepard needs to build a crew). I'd say being a Spectre gives me a better feeling of being that "one special ingredient that makes a difference" though.

I can't call it. I abstain.

I think we have an idea for a new game there...

Spectres for me, I think its the sense of acomplishment that also comes with building up to be the best. Being "built" to be great wouldnt be all its cracked up to be, plus I hear the Spartans augmentation process was.....rather painful.

I'll have to go with Spectre, mainly for all the reasons already listed above. Or possibly because I haven't actually ever played a Halo game. That said, reading through what others have written so far I draw the conclusion that Spartans are the type of men (and women? I don't know anything about the Halo lore) that would be chosen for the Spectres regardless, at least if they have some amount of charisma.

However, science is always cheating and I don't like cheating, so I'm going to go with Spectre in the end.

Looks like a versus thread to me.

But to stay on topic, ermm I chose Spartans I guess, I've got a PS3 so I'm kinda fucked in the decision making process of choosing because Xbox exclusive characters and mythos.

I find both overrated, but since I prefer Halo to Mass Effect I'm going to say Spartans. The Spartan III's from Reach. Not every single Spartan was made like Mastercheif, the III's aren't cyborg supersoldiers, They are as human as anyone of you people on this board.
I think you missed the point. He's not talking about Halo Spartans and Mass Effect Spectres, he's referring to genetically enhanced supersoldiers and just naturally awesome people. He's using the terms to generalise.

But where would we put Marcus Fenix and his square-headed friend from the Gears of War series? They've got power armour, and they're certainly enhanced in some way above the rank and file, but I don't think they're enhanced enough to be called super soldiers.

I'm going with Spartan. Simply because out of 10,000 people, only handful survived and you play one of them. Spectres are chosen from elite soldiers. Plus, Spartans are usually chosen because they have showed some potential at Childhood and the augmentations are just increasing them.
