I browse the Splinter Cell forums alot, and the overwhelming feeling is one of massive disappointment, in some cases anger. I'm a massive fan on Splinter Cell, of stealth games in general. To me, the pivotal meaning of stealth is being able to AVOID your enemies where possible.

Conviction disregards that, to make it more "accessible" in the words of Mr Bell End, sorry, Mr Beland. All the game consists of is stage-to-stage encounters where you kill all the enemies using M&E and admittedly pretty cool melee takedowns. It doesn't feel like a Stealth game. More of a shooter with stealth elements thrown in.

Not to say it's a bad game, although it does get incredibly repetitive after a few hours.

All of this is my opinion, and the opinions of roughly 80% of the people on the forum. However, they are mainly Splinter Cell fans, and are as such biased.

What about the Escapist? Gamers interested in a wide range of games? What do you think?

PS. I search for this topic, but couldnt find it.

I found Conviction to be great. Sure, it wasn't conventional, but it was fun, and fun makes games for me.

I found it to be great, but not really Splinter Cell. A new Hitman is coming out at the end of the year, I heard.

It wasn't a true Splinter Cell in my mind, but it was fun, and continued the narrative in a rational way.

It showed me why games are supposed to be fun. It sure entertained me throughout the course of the single-player.

I just had images in my head of a Hitman game playing like Conviction. I'll have nightmares tonight.

It was fun, though it wasn't even close to what I wanted. The stealth was pathetic at best.

It's not stealth, now even though not all stealth is about avoiding conflict, the way SC:C handled it was horrible.

Hell, UC2 stealth sections made more sense than SC:C, at least in that game when you got spotted the enemy AI actually reacted like they had half a brain taking cover and shoot in your vicinity instead of walking in circles calling your name like a retard with a bullseye painted on their forehead...=/

I really enjoyed Splinter Cell Conviction, it was the first adventure of Sam Fisher's that I really got into. SC:C created the feeling that makes me play stealth games; makes you feel powerful. Most stealth games make you feel weak, you have to hide or die. Conviction and Batman: Arkham Asylum created the feeling that you're a predator. You felt like: I'm taking down these guys one at a time, not because I'm weak and powerless, but because I'm just fucking with them. This is fun, I'm a dangerous predator, I'm coming for you. Just a matter of when.

I just don't think of it as a Splinter Cell game. It was fun, and the co-op is a blast. All in all, a great game, but not a Splinter Cell game.

haven't played it, but as long as the stealth game doesn't FORCE me to stealth, and it gives viable options to stealth or go gung ho on the room/area, depending on if im low on ammo or depending on the situation, i prefer when its not forced to fight or FORCED to stealth around, i freaking hated batman AA when they forced you to stealth and crap, just let me KICK ASS

If you're not going to sneak why bother playing a STEALTH game at all. That kind of ruins the point.

And in Conviction there is NO WAY to sneak through the whole level on ANY level. There's almost no stealth at all it's an average TPS with minimal stealth elements. Hell MGS is a stealth-action game and you can sneak through 90% of it unnoticed if you do it right.

I thought it was fun. Since getting spotted means you've got to disappear or else you're screwed, I'd say that's stealth.

I always thought the game needed to be more freeflowing - If anything, this is a step in the right direction. I liked this SC alot, but it just needed to be stretched a bit - Open Worlded maps perhaps, and making the older form of stealth an OPTION but still allow the current improvements; Like using a button to change the style with which you move.

I could go on forever...

i like to sneak when its a free flow environment, but when the damn game FORCES me to do it their way it pisses me off, like in batman, why can't i choose how to stealth? if im the one doing the sneaking i think i should be able to choose how to do it and which way to go.

just my opinion, this is why i dont play too many stealth games..

well conviction i might have to check out, once the prices go down of course.

I disliked it and it became one of those games that I call the "I can't believe I wasted 60 bucks on this."

The game wasen't bad at first, but after about 3 levels of the same thing, I got bored. Splinter Cell:Double Agent is often called one of the weaker splinter cell games, but I loved it and rather hated what they did in Conviction. I'm glad they tried something new, I'm just rather upset that it no longer feels like a Splinter Cell game and more like the Bourne game without the melee moments.
