You need us to tell you which game to get between a relatively unknown game and a game that has been hyped up for about a year?

Alpha Protocol has some good ideas, but after watching gameplay it just comes across as downright shoddy.

Splinter Cell it's just that good. But if you don't know much about the series main character Sam Fisher i recommend you play the other four games which are

Splinter Cell
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (good luck finding it)
Splinter Cell: Double Agent

I'd go with Alpha Protocol, if I had to choose.

An Obsidian game that wasn't rushed out the door by the publisher? I want it!

I know I'm going for Alpha Protocol, because apparently it's more Stealth/RPG, and I love RPG's.

Alpha Protocol is probably the more stealthy game, from what I've played of Conviction's demo.
Conviction is more like a third-person shooter with elements of stealth now... though, if that's your sort of thing, go for it.

Pretty much this exactly, it just doesn't look polished, or even finished in places. Plus the Splinter Cell Conviction trailer includes Johnny Cash, you do not argue with the Man in Black.

I would really like to hear you reasoning behind that statement.
Elaborate.
I played the demo, but my issues were with the gameplay itself (which I assume is consistent throughout the game).

-I didn't like the silly system whereby you could 'tag' enemies and just press a button to have the game played for you.
-I didn't like that you can completely disregard stealth and cunning and just gun down enemies.
-I didn't like how the lens flare completely obscures the screen at time.

This is all massively subjective, mind, so don't take it too personally.

Not to nitpick, but couldn't you still do this in Chaos Theory and Double Agent? Sure, in Chaos Theory that resulted in foes gearing up, and Double Agent had...wait, what did Double Agent have?

Anyway, you could pretty much play through using a shotgun attached to your assault rifle to give foes a right good rodgering, as well as a sniper rifle attachment, unless the point of the mission is to avoid detection. We've only seen one level thus far, and it just so happened to be one where being detected wasn't that big a deal.

Now, if the game comes out and then we see it's all like that, with no downsides like in CT, then I'm with you. I thought the point was that Sam is meant to be working with improvised tactics and gear, not the fancy Third Echelon stuff, you can't go "herpaderp, i runz in and spray n pray" all the time. Until then, I'll wait and see.

The last Splinter Cell game I played was the first one. I'm not really an expert on the series, so my opinion is highly dubious.

The first two are completely optional though to be fair.

If it's Xbox then Splinter Cell, if it's PC, then Alpha Protocol, as you WANT to avoid the DRM at ALL COSTS!

Alpha protocol is a spy/stealth game made by obsidian who have made games such as star wars knights of the old repulic the neverwinter nights series and will be making fallout new vegas. In the game obsidian is hoping to blend the rpg game elements with the spy stealth genre to create a game that looks alot like mass effect, it has good graphics but like borderlands (a game with similar intent, it looks like it might take too long to kill someone). And a final note in this game you do not have to be a stealthy character you get to change your character the way you want to with about 10 different options.

Is that enough information? If not just check out some gameplay at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHWagzuijxs

I agree that the splinter cell conviction demo shows almost no regard for the past game, more often than not I just shoot people instead of attacking from stealth killing them (this is probablly becasue of the amount of people closed in together), I the only reason I think half of you don't like it is because you are comparing it to other splinter cell games rather than thinking about the game itself.

Just for accuracy here, Obsidian made Knights of the Old Republic 2, and Neverwinter Nights 2. Bioware created the originals and handed off the sequals to Obsidian. Just FYI
