So I want to play some games with my girlfriend, but she doesn't have a decent PC with her, nor can she afford a game at the moment.

I have two wired Xbox 360 controllers.

I have lots of games on steam and such. Only Portal 2 offers local co-op as far as I know.

I don't see why L4D + L4D2 don't offer local co-op when it's available on the console version.

I think more PC games should include split screen functionality. Imagine all the people you could have playing at once on a single projector screen or something! So many USB ports! The possibilities!!!

So, question: do you know any other PC games that offer local co-op? Or how to get it working on some existing ones?

Edit: hHere's local for L4D2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Nlp1j9u3T1Y

make sure to read the description tho

it is really annoying that they don't include it, i've dinked around and gotten both the portals to work splitscreen but that took some effort.

(i actually had my monitor and my tv as one long display and was able to set it up to have the tv be one splitscreen and my monitor be the other, was quite amazing after all was said and done)

Serious Sam 3 has split screen, from what I recall. It even has full controller support, so if you and your girlfriend fancy shooting the shit out of everything in sight then SS3 should have you covered.

EDIT: And perfect timing! The whole Serious Sam franchise is this week's midweek deal on Steam...

Beat Hazard has two player. It isn't really 'split screen' but it allows two people to control two ships and shoot everything down. I think it's on steam for ten dollars.

Awesomenauts has split-screen, although the game doesn't really have co-op, you're just both on the same team against online players or bots. Still, it's an excellent game worth checking out.

But yeah, more PC games need split-screen or same-screen multiplayer. Especially if companies really want to push the whole living room PC thing, as split-screen games tend to work really well with that kind of setup.

On a related note, more PC games need LAN play, specifically where you can do it with only one copy of the game. There has been many occasions where I've wanted to play a LAN game with friends, but can't because it would require getting two copies, which I would rather not do if I'm just going to play LAN with one or more of them. Personally, I think Steam should have something like "LAN copies" of games, which contain the full multiplayer of a game, but can only be played over LAN with at least one person that owns the full copy.

If you want a hack-and-slash and like LOTR you can play The Return of the King co-op split screen and it is a pretty fun game, though relatively short. Though I'm unsure if this still applies if purchased through Steam.

You could do worse than to get a cheap N64 or PS2, and grab Perfect Dark or Timesplitters.

The only PC games with split screen I've ever enjoyed are Blobby Volley, Liero, and Battle Painters.

I highly recommend the first two

Kayne and Lynch 1 does that I think. I know it doesn't have online PC play at least.

I don't find the functionality that desirable. I'm all for hotseat, though, or a game that otherwise has more people on at once (Fighters like Mortal Kombat or Guilty Gear) but splitscreen just isn't for me - racing, shooters, etc just don't feel right.

I know Shipwreckers does.

It's an old game from the 1990's but it is so fun so go.
Shipwreckers was one of my favorite games as a kid. I think I'll head over to GoG at some point.

Overgrowth (alpha) has local splitscreen and it's awesome. You guys should try it.

Why not play games that are meant for local multiplayer, like Castle Crashers or Street Fighter IV?

Can't think of any decent PC split-screen games better than the ones given, but maybe looking into the older brawlers and shooters might help. If it's old-school 2-player fun on single screen, TNMT, Golden Axe, Bad Dudes, Contra, etc. can all be emulated and played on any machine built in the last ten years. Most emulators have a tool that will let you configure the buttons to a current-day gamepad as well.

A lot of local co-op Megadrive games are, oddly, available on Steam, too. It's awesome.

Monaco just released, and that game is awesome.

With that one, though, you can even go up to 4 people. It's also pretty cheap.

Well I'll refrain from repeating anything stated above.

The lego games are all local co-op if i recall correctly.

Worms is always fun, you might be able to hotseat some RTS or TBS too.

I'm all for it. I want to be able to play more games on my system, when my brother is visiting. It's just fun to chill on the couch with some dudes and play some games together. I honestly can't see why there are not more games that include something like that.

Trine did it with up to three players on one system. I heard RE 5 and 6 do it to. I sort of see why it's not all that common, but many PC gamers (like me) own controllers. There is nothing wrong in giving them a reason to use them.

A hundred times, yes. I don't get much quality time with my brother anymore, so whenever our schedules align we make a point to play local co-op. Problem is, the only games available for local co-op are either racing games (which get very repetitive very fast) or terrible hack-n-slashers from Germany.
