While this may seem like a ridiculous statement to most of you out there (and to me as well), my father, an otherwise intelligent and rational person with an illogical hatred of video games, has recently been condemning games on the grounds that they may contain spyware. His theory seems to be that some "data mining corporations" could be paying developers (especially indie developers with a low budget) large sums of money under the table to hide spyware into their games, so that said mysterious corporations could extract your personal information and use it how they pleased. I already explained to him that no self-respecting developer or publisher would do that to their customers (well, excepting maybe EA, but they're corrupt enough as it is) but he remains unconvinced. I thought perhaps if I had some back up from you guys I could change his mind. Do you think developers would do this? I'd like to hear everyone's opinion.

More likly, EA and it's Nazi Haroring ways would make Spyware and Viruses to crash your pc and blow it up if you tried to pirate it. Ea's been getting depreased.

You mean depressing, right?

But yeah, EA already put Securom into Spore and won't let us remove it... so this already has a precedent. I presume you mean more serious stuff though. I doubt it'll happen. Too many legal problems and consumer backlash to handle.

What I mean is that my dad seems to believe that some little indie developer who's enjoyed moderate success like TaleWorlds or 2Dboy would be just as likely to do this as those bastards at EA; that it's just as likely that the next Half-life game or a sequel to Mount & Blade would have some kind of spyware in it as the next Electronic Arts release. I agree though, it wouldn't be logical in any sense.

Gamers tend to be a fairly tech savvy bunch. If a major company tried putting spyware in their games someone would figure it out. Word of mouth would kill any future purchases from said company from a decent sized portion of the community.

In short, it would never happen because companies are (hopefully) smart enough to realize that future profits will probably be worth more in the long-run than a short term gain.

I think EA needs to get laid.
Then they won't be as fucking evil.
Anyway, yeah, EA'd do it in a heartbeat, but no, most indie developers have souls still, or at least remember having one, so they won't do that.
