The 23rd of April is England Day. Our patron saint, who never even set foot in the Isles. Unlike other countries that celebrate the day, England has a history of not celebrating it like St Patrick is, worldwide.

Places like Barcelona, Beirut, Lebanon and Bulgaria cheer this "mighty hero" while we might wave a flag and dance round a maypole if we're REALLY pushed.

Scotland tends to push St. Andrew aside for Burn's night, and St. David's Day (Wales) simply marks a whole load of daffodils.

Australia and America both hold the Virgin Mary as their Saint, possibly because they're younger (in Christian terms)?

The thing is though - paradoxically - St George and his flag have been seen as the rallying of the far right, the new Reich, and this is more a case of them stealing it for their own cause.

So, tomorrow, dependent on your culture, what will you be doing?

I will be going about life as normal.

Also, I didn't think maypole dancing was St. Georges day. I know back in infants at primary school we did it, but I thought that was more a May bank holiday thing.

I'll be at work. As per bloody usual.

If I wasn't, I may have had the opportunity to partake of some ale.

Working on my uni work unfortunately, so no celebrating for me. But then I don't celebrate any saint's days, so no big deal really. I only celebrate personal things really.

Well, as usual I forgot to take the day off, so I shall be working which is a shame because its actually quite sunny. Although I don't think it all that big a deal missing it, as I'm sure all the yobs will be out using it as an excuse to get all drunk and nasty.

Now that I know about it, i'll follow the Australian way and get pissed as a nit.

Thankyou for another excuse ^^

Personally i'd consider Simpson [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Simpson_Kirkpatrick] to be more of a saint for Australia, but he doesn't really fit the rules.

It's my birthday so I will probably be spending my new money, enjoying my presents etc. other than that nothing.
I'd heard that it was a big day in England but I haven't noticed anything here in Australia.

EDIT: WAIT, wait...The English need an excuse to get pissed? Damn, here "Its Tuesday" is good enough.

St. Patrick's is not celebrated world-wide. I have never seen anyone wearing green here. A lot of people don't even know who St. Patrick of Ireland was.

And I have no idea who St. George is.

I know that Poland has a lot of Saint Mary's days. Well, days... Some of them are just celebrations of one moment/day of her life. The closest one is on 7th.

But then again, first Polish religious hymn was:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogurodzica

So I think it's justified. Of course, it's a really, really old hymn, so words sound really strange even to us, natives. They can be understood, but nobody uses most of them. SO DON'T TRY TO LEARN FROM THAT! Or they'll think you are peasants.

It's always bugged me how we celebrate st. Patrick but not st. George. Boris Johnson's made it his mission to change that tho (Week long celebration in London) so who knows? Maybe that'll change.

"HEY LADS, LETS CELEBRATE THE ACTIONS OF SOME ARBITRARY NATIONAL FIGURE WHO HAS ABSOLUTLY NO CONNECTION TO US WHATSOEVER!!1!!11"

That about summs up my view, also: Nationalism makes no sense.

We should have a parade, but instead of confetti, we throw tea leaves! And then we should do something like build a papier mache dragon and then have a guy called george attack it... yes, it should be a giant dragon pinata! fantastic!

The infamous SCAMola said:
What did Saint George ever do anyway, he supposedly killed a Dragon(!?!), which is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
NO! ITS THE COOLEST EVER!

Imagine all the women...
oh wait...he was probably celibate.
Boring. lol

Still. St George is my patron saint. I shall celebrate! ^_^
