now my questions/discussion is

*what is so good about these games? i have heard praise about them before but i dont know what they are so good at doing, so please give some details.

*are they both worth it? or what do they feature? do they build off each other?

Give it a try, its only ten bucks and you get two games for cheaper then they're going individually.

DO IT.

This is not debatable. ShOC and CoP are damned fine games, fun on their own, and infinitely more fun with properly selected mods.

If you liked Fallout 3. If you liked Borderlands. If you like any kind of post-disaster survival kind of shooters, you owe it to yourself to play a STALKER. Then play both again with mods.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are AMAZING, and they are famous for their beautifully detailed environments, brutal AI, realistic gunplay, and creepy atmosphere.

To pass them up would be a mistake!

I always found the underground sections in the first one to be terrifying. Especially with those damned bloodsuckers.

Never played the prequel or sequel.

I'll admit to only having played SoC. I'd say it is worth it though because SoC is worth it alone. There may be some problems with the games, but there are mods to fix most of them.

Clear Sky is decent enough, but the better of the three is Call of Pripyat in my opinion. Call of Pripyat has plenty of room to roam without paying too much attention to the story. I have always enjoyed completing the game at my own pace so I can explore, and Call of Pripyat allows for that.

I have played the first and 2nd game...never got past the beginning really..i don't like it much..mainly cuz it leaves me all alone with no direction to go and i HATE walking around everywhere...so IMO it a bit to realistic for me

- No real depth to the environment
I was wondering. What exactly do you mean by this statement?
Look at, for example, Half-Life 2. The environment has detail, yes, but it also has depth. The environment matters. You use it to solve puzzles. You can move the environment, and it moves with you. The environment changes. It has depth. Well, for an FPS game anyway.

Compare this with STALKER. STALKER's environments are detailed, sure, but they don't MATTER. You never use the environment to do things, or change the environment. It all becomes scenery after a while. Kinda boring.
I am going to have to say that I disagree with you.

The environment in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. promotes exploration and is filled with dangers all of its own. There are burnt out villages with hidden stashes, anomolies that will kill you after mere seconds of exposure, and randomly distributed pockets of radiation that slowly kill everything that ventures into them. Improvised fortresses and camps litter the landscape and often change hands on a daily basis. Once night falls, it becomes apparent that the entire landscape is teaming with creatures that only desire to rip your face off; their cries being heard from miles away as they communicate with one another. Hell, in Call Of Pripyat, there are random emissions from the reactor that roll over the landscape; killing everything in it's path that doesn't take shelter, and it redistributes the artifacts that appear in the anomolies.

The environment in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has far more depth and dimension than you give it credit for. While Half-Life 2 is a great game, for sure, it relies far too heavily on environmentally driven physics puzzles. Believe it or not, having an environment full of physics objects does not necessarily make it better. If nothing else, it can make it cluttered.

Besides, how would you propose we, "Use," the environment in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Would we hit our enemies with boards that we pick up off of the ground? To be honest, I am not seeing your complaint. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is best known for it's environment, and you may still feel it is lacking, but there are thousands of fans, and game reviewers, who disagree.

STALKER is one of the things that makes pc gaming unique.
If you like that or not is up to you.

(I own all 3 and SoC twice)

I think it is worth it. I have played and finished both of them. Like some others have said, they have flaws, but what game does not? Well worth it for thr money. Hell, I paid ?24.99 for CoP a few months ago, and that was well worth it.

Well, if you like your games with atmosphere, get them. Get them now. The shooting is very good (almost like real life), the gameplay is both brutal and rewarding, the atmosphere is unmatched, and it has one of the best modding communities out there.

If you have the computer to run it, for STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, get the LURK mod. It improves the game immensely. The Super Mod Pack is good as well. Complete 2009 is good, but a bit outdated at this point.

The ones in the deal, Call of Pripyat and SoC, are the best. Clear Sky has a lot of problems, so it's only for the hardcore fans, but SoC and CoP are more than worth the 10 quid.
thanks for the suggestion on the mods, ill have to try those out (i'd like to think i have a decent pc as it can run everything i've thrown at it thus far)

STALKER is an FPS with a semi-linear story, it has some sandbox aspects in that you can explore areas and find loot, do sidequests, etc. It has some looting, buying and selling weapons, armor, and so on. There are also special artifacts you can equip to gain abilities.

Pros:
+ Quite sandboxy
+ Lots of weapons, armor, customization basically
+ Questing and exploring is quite engaging
+ The world environment is fairly detailed and engaging
+ Often quite good atmosphere in the game

Cons:
- Poor localisation (Voice acting, grammar, etc)
- Quest repetition becomes tedious and ruins immersion
- No real depth to the environment
- CAN NOT REPAIR ITEMS GAHHH
- Last part of the game is quite poor, I remember rushing it due to complete boredom

Overall I'd rate it 7/10. I think it's well worth it to get STALKER and CoP for 6 quid.
thank you for the detailed response, it definitly looks like a game i can enjoy at my own pace, especially for 10 dollars, ill have to get it tommorrow more then likely

- It is not the environment which promotes exploration, but the promise of loot. Big difference.

- The hidden stashes are good, yes I agree.

- The anomalies are static, and boring. Nothing more than an annoyance after the initial novelty factor wears off. Same goes for radiation.

- The AI in STALKER is not good enough to use these 'fortresses', as you call them, intelligently.

- Similarly, the AI of creatures, night or day, is nothing special. The fear factor quickly wears off when you realise how dumb they are.

- Can't comment on CoP features, I haven't played that game.

- I disagree that in HL2, the environment is simply 'cluttered'. In HL2 the environment matters from a gameplay perspective - it is USED in that gameplay. It is not just scenery like in STALKER. (And yes, deadly scenery is still scenery)

Ok so you would like me to invent some possible ways of using the environment in a sandboxy, open world game like STALKER. I'm not a games dev and I don't get paid to do this, but I can think of a few things off the top of my head.

1) A bridge could be destroyed with a well-placed explosive, bringing it down onto a bunch of enemies.

2) A squad of enemies could be lured into an anomaly.

3) Climb a tree to snipe enemies, or kill a horde of attacking dogs/creatures/whatever safely.

4) Anomalies could be used/controlled somehow to solve puzzles and interact with the environment.

5) Trees could be brought down with an axe in order to cross ravines, get past anomalies, etc.

6) Heavy objects could be used to barricade doors in order to create a defensible building.

etc etc
Simply having to stack cinder blocks on a plank to get on top of a ledge is hardly an impressive use of the environment. The problem with HL2 is that it is constantly reminding you to, "Use this block to get up here," and things of that nature. It really doesn't add anything - especially since HL2 doesn't have the open world that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has.

Crysis would be a far better example of, "Using the environment," than HL2 anyway. Crysis offers far more freedom and there are far more objects to manipulate (including the ability to bring down trees and blow up bridges that you mentioned). However, the mechanics you described are either unnecessary in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or are already present in the game (luring enemies in anomolies and sniping enemies from a safe vantage point). I should also point out that I have yet to find a game that allows the player to easily climb a tree in a way that is actually useful, and that the engine developed for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was not designed for building the game around physics puzzles.

Having puzzles embedded in the environment need not make it exciting. It generally makes it tedious. HL2's puzzles were more of a break in the action than 'fun.' Why are you so fixated on the, "move this box here," aspect of the environment anyway? It's not necessarily a needed game mechanic.

I've played all the stalkers and I haven't really enjoyed any of them too much. There are just a lot better FPS's out there. I found myself getting really bored with them before I got too close to the end.

I will give the games atmosphere credit though, it's kinda cool seeing all the lightning and gloomy weather but otherwise I would rate the games at about a 7 or so.

My opinion? Go for it. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is one of the best, most original and most atmospheric FPS series in the world. Every second you spent reading this post is wasted time you could be spending buying and playing it.
