Chances are i will, eventually, because i like the storyline a lot and want to see where it goes... (especially Raynor's story, that guy is awesome) the problem is the price.

So i will wait patiently that Blizz sell all three games in a bundle for much less than the 150$+ it will cost if i did otherwise. Im in no hurry.

]i realised RTS had very little strategy element
RTS's have little strategy but a lot of tactics, they honestly just named the genre wrong
Well, from what I understand, tactics is like strategy, but with more detail and on a smaller scale. So within the context of Starcraft 2, a tactic might be a certain maneouver a group of units does to achieve something. (micromanagement.) whereas strategy is your long-term planning (micromanagement.)

Again, tell me if I'm wrong.
I have always been told that tactics are what you use on a smaller scale, battles and skirmishes, and strategy is what you use as the overall battle plan for the operation or war.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactic_%28method%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategy

"In military usage strategy is distinct from tactics, which are concerned with the conduct of an engagement, while strategy is concerned with how different engagements are linked. How a battle is fought is a matter of tactics: the terms and conditions that it is fought on and whether it should be fought at all is a matter of strategy, which is part of the four levels of warfare: political goals or grand strategy, strategy, operations, and tactics."(Wikipedia)

That basically sums it up

StarCraft was one of the most popular and successful RTS games ever made. Koreans play it professionally. So it's a big deal no matter how you look at it. I loved the 3 different races, the awesome story and the varied and interesting characters. The online play was where it was at though, with UMS games like Evolves and Golems. Actually, this thread gives me a good opportunity.

A few days ago, Gamestop called me and told me I had a SCII Beta Key to pick up, due to signing my name and phone number a few years back when it was supposedly going to be released in 2009. I would love to play, but in all honesty I'm not really someone who does well with beta tests. I would not be able to devote 100% of my time to finding bugs or cracks in the game, or even enjoying it like other people might. Since their pretty common now, what do you guys suggest I do with it?
Sell it. You'll still get a pretty penny from it.

gagalloogie, are you by any chance a fan of Roger Ebert? It's just that you sound a lot like him.

Honestly, a lot of the beta is just stress testing right now, so just look at it as an opportunity to enjoy the game's MP for free for a while?

If you're looking for really good strategy games, try the Warhammer RTS's. They all have upgradable units, limits on what you can take into a battle (there's no base building and reinforcements), and you actually have to play tactically.

Get your archers to soften up the enemy, and make sure you get the charge not him. Eliminate his hero units before they chomp up your normal units. Take down the siege / cannon type weapons before they turn your troops to mulch.

I'm horrible at it... and it's still more fun than the build-a-huge-army-and-crush-your-enemy type games that claim to be Strategy games.

I don't need money though. I was thinking of giving it away, but I don't know anyone who is personally into it who doesn't have it already. At least in real life. :/
Ok then. Sell it and give the money to charity

I kind of hate the fact that everyone is completely disregarding the singleplayer that comes with SC2
You're right. Even though Blizzard's stories shifted to a very patriotic pathos, I enjoy playing their games for the story. They don't refuse to make their main characters suffer in new ways and build good surrounding lore to their games. Remember the manuals for Diablo and Starcaft? All the lore to give more context to the games' universe...

Seems as if people who like a developed plot in their games is a dying breed :(

Pylon Hard on.

...Come on, someone had to say it.

Anyways, don't care for it, but given how the original Starcraft is still hailed as the holy grail of RTSs, it's easy to understand how people might be excited over the sequel...

That said, it seems like more of the same to me.

Not entirely sure what the point of discussion is here. The OP is obviously of the opinion that anything he doesn't like must be flawed. That's not something that can be argued away.

Anyway, SC2 will be awesome. SC was awesome. I mostly loved it for the cheats in the campaign (remember, there isn't a cow level :D), and the variety of scenarios to play online. It was great to start with, and allowed itself to become legendary by engaging the creativity of its players. Heaven knows why so few games have picked up on that formula since.

"Very little strategy" you say? Just how many games become actual sports? Have you even heard of a little place called South Korea?

And yeah I don't see how to argue this, he just seems to be in a little bubble where RTSes are rock paper scissor games with graphics.

Yup, no strategy here:
Compared to all the other leading RTS's in the market - no not really.
Most game's ive seen/played consist of a random mix between who can gank the fastest, who can tech to their best flyer the fastest, and who can harvest the most with wasting as little resources as possible/ rape the other guys harvesters on the sly.

It consists very little of army balancing, positioning, and field manoeuvres.

I like strategy games and some RTS games included, however from what i'd heard, until a few decent posts actually gave evidence, Starcraft 2 sounded pretty RTS classic with little strategy.

BTW- Dawn of war 2 is not good official, (according to critics), i thought it was meh borderline OK, but only played it a few times.
'is not good official'

What... what are you even saying? I realize you're just trolling, but seriously, what does that even mean? If DOW2 had received a bad reception I 'might' be able to puzzle out what you mean, but it's got an 85% rating on metacritic and is widely considered one of the best rts out right now, so honestly I've no clue what you're trying to imply. Are you deliberately typing incoherently in order to confuse people? I can't think of any other excuse for such terrifyingly bad grammar!

Although it is nice to see the whole 'I never really played it but I'm going to judge it anyway' strategy being employed here.

Truly you are a troll among troll.

Personally I can't bloody wait for Starcraft 2. While I enjoy the new trends for rts like those employed in Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, Sins of a Solar Empire, and yes; Dawn of War 2. It'll be nice to return to some classic RTS gameplay tightened up with modern technology and Blizzards famous attention to detail. Oughta be grand!
