I know, I know, I KNOW! The first thing I'm going to hear is, "Oh noes, not another Starcraft 2 poll!" But I'm bored, I've got questions, and I don't care what you think!
...okay, maybe I do care what you think, I'm asking for your opinion anyhow.

Anyways, the main reason that I created this thread, is to ask you, escapists, whether you think that I would like Starcraft 2. I've looked at the videos, and reviews, but I don't trust anyone who's payed to spout bullshit out their ass. So, here's a summary of me and my rts past.

So, I'm a casual gamer, I'm not really good at games, I just like to play them. This is especially true for rts's. I kind of suck at them. I mean, I love them, but I have a hard time winning on easy. Rts games I've loved are: Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2, Star Wars: Empire at War, Age of Empires 2(Really loved this game. Used to play this a ton when I was a kid.), and Sins of a Solar Empire.

I really enjoy games where you can build bases and build up your units, cause that's kind of my strategy. I'm told it's called "turtling", and it's the way I win most games.

I HATED Command and Conquer 4, but I didn't play any of the other Command and Conquer games.

So, what do you think? Should I spend my money on it? Also, suggestions for other rts's would be appreciated as well.

Like I said, I hate to seem selfish, but I'm just really not sure whether or not to get this game.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and opinions.

For the singleplayer go ahead, no problem. You might want to try SC1 first to see if you like this type of game. As for the multiplayer; it's punishing as hell so if you don't plan to invest a lot of time in getting better then I wouldn't go for it.

Multiplayer is for people who don't have girlfriends, and do not wish to get girlfriends at any point in the future. It takes up so much time to get the skill to beat even the lowliest player.

I love the base building, though. Like all the C&C games except 4, except a whole lot more complicated.

I think you'd need to change your attitude before you would like SC2. Do you shy away from competition? Do you always stick to the same way of playing even when it clearly doesn't work? Do you have no drive to improve your skills? If so, don't bother. People that say things like admitting they're bad or that they "just want to have fun" tend to be way too sensitive about their skill level and resistant to any suggestion to practice. If you're not willing to practice and learn how to play decently, just go play Sins of a Solar Empire and turtle while spamming long-range frigates like everyone else.

If you're actually willing to PRACTICE and can handle competition, there isn't a single better RTS (or game) in existence.

Maybe for scrubs whose girlfriends don't play Starcraft with them. ;)

I'll say this, if you're only using one tactic to beat players, forget SC2. I mean, sure, it can work, but with so many players and such a big game there will be massive amounts of strategies and counter-strategies. If you want to be really good at it in multi-player, you need several strategies and counter-measures. I learned that from getting my ass kicked over and over in the beta. If you're willing to become better at RTS, there's no other game than Starcraft 2. You could do a lot worse.

As for the single-player, you would probably get some fun out of it if you like RTS. It's a very rich RTS, with many options, and I doubt the single-player is much different from the multi-player, except the enemy is a bot.

use cheese and u will have no problem with multiplayer. btw after being in the beta in it's current state the game is a rehashed package of the original. the story line should be excellent and the mp will be worth it if u don't get to competitive. also the mp ladder is the dumbest invention they have ever conceived. ie groups of 100 in various sections (diamond, plat, gold silver bronze, copper)so each play can think they have achieved something by reaching the top of their bracket. (beyond stupid who cares if u r ranked 3rd in your bracket u r still in copper) etc etc btw bnut 2.0 = broken piece of crap that will crash on release i assure it. also there is a major drop bug still present that was never fixed just fyi

The campaign is sure to be pretty cool, and the multiplayer is pretty fun. I'm not all that good (just short of completely sucking, I was in the middle of bronze I think), but I still have fun playing. Playing with friends is always fun, too.

Don't bother, if you're not good at RTS games you won't have fun with it. If you're really not sure, find a discounted copy of Star Craft and play that, if you enjoy Star Craft 1, you'll like Star Craft 2.

Starcraft 2 is the first RTS game I have enjoyed.
Despite my initial ineptitude, I learned the game quickly and ended up an average player.
The single player campaign looks excellent.

Yes, I would recommend getting Starcraft 2.

You made my eyes hurt. And I'd say troll on this.

OT:

SC2 is Very competitive. If you do not want to invest a lot of time in it and learn how to play properly, you will get punished for every single (wrong) move you make. If you're only turtling, then the campaign could be fun, though it won't always make it a win. So if you lack the competitive spirit, wait till the price has gone down and buy it for Campaign and some costum matches, if you have it; Buy it at release and aim for the top!

You'll probably enjoy this then.

i say sc2 is a definite buy. just youtube some of the custom maps and you will see that sc2 isnt just an rts. i have seen a remake of contra, tetris, a 3rd person shooter, a fps, dota, a variant of pacman, galaga, a top down shooter, and an rpg. one of the taglines for the sc2 map editor system is "you will never need to buy another game". even if you hate sc2 (somehow) the map editors out there will go crazy with the games they create

Geez, that's a hard one to read. Cheese almost never works (Maybe in lower leagues) since you will instantly know something is up when you scout your opponent out.

cheese does work with good micro. example 6 pool... 4 gate... quick banshee... reaper rush on a toss... it works in plat and diamond trust me as long as you can use the exploit to its fullest. the game in itself is well worth the price for custom games. there are currently a mass influx of user created content that is nearly complete with the return of some timeless classics. i was not lying about bnet 2.0 being broken it still has bugs that will ctd and a bug that drops players from 2v2 3v3 and 4v4 matches at the start or 20 min in. it has an achievement system that is tbh pointless and has tried to make it so that in order to unlock "avatars" you must complete x,y,z achievements. if you have the willingness to try out the mp stick against the comp in co-op mode and don't play against insane w/e you do. (it cheats) otherwise the reviews will call it the second coming however not much has changed and it truly is a rehashed product with a new engine for mp. the single player however is worth the price of admission alone

It is a beast of a game that will bend you over it knee and paddle you like a errant schoolboy if you are not on your toes for every single second of the match. I can best sum it up by calling it the twitch shooter of RTSes. That being said, it's arguably the best game that is coming out for the RTS market in the last five years and you should buy it.
