I've just gotten into the stealth genre.

I've been playing a lot of MGS3 lately, even though it'll probably be the first Metal Gear game I've beaten. I've played a little bit of 2, and I got 4 from Gamefly, way back when.
The interesting thing is getting used to being patient with your enemies. My first instinct is to just charge into combat the second I'm caught, and that's provided a few issues.
Overall, though, I'm excited to play more of the series, since they have such an awesome, if ridiculous story.

Oh, by the way, I have the Snake Eater disc in the Subsistence box.
I'll order Subsistence at some point off of Amazon, though.

So, do you like the stealth genre?
What games are your favorite, and why?

I like Splinter Cell, it makes me feel like a badass :D

I've never tried MGS though, and I hear it's pretty good >.>

Wait... there are good stealth games apart from Thief?

Huh. News to me.

On a somewhat related note, Assassin's Creed is not a stealth game. It's an action platformer.

I like MGS...

Also, I've got no clue about Assassin's Creed. Never played a single game in the series.

Thief is definitely the best. After that it's Deus Ex. Batman Arkham Asylum kind of counts too.

MGS is interesting, but not particularly good. Haven't played Splinter Cell yet.

Hitman and Tenchu should definitely be in the list before Assassin's Creed though.

Wait a minute, this thread looks awfully familiar... Oh, it is probably nothing.

OT: Hitman by far. Hitman: Blood money was the only game I played were I actually felt stealthy. You had so many options how to approach and take out the targets, and the game played beautifully. Disguising yourself as various people was a great addition as well. I could never "get" Splinter Cell, and I have never played Thief or Tenchu. Assassins Creed is barely a stealth game anymore it seems (well, 2 was barely a stealth game, anyway. Haven't played Brotherhood yet). Metal Gear had a great story, but it controlled terribly, which makes me wary of giving it the label "favorite stealth series".

EDIT: In case I did not make it clear, you really need to get Hitman: Blood Money. It takes a while to get used to, but when you do, woah boy, it is an experience like no other, let me tell you.

Assasin's Creed, as it made the stealth bits optional.

Assassin's Creed, because it didn't matter if they saw you (as long as you weren't conspicuous) and running was a decent option.

Deus Ex and Batman: Arkham Asylum were two excellent games, probably some of the best games of all time. They have a lot of stealth features, but I'm not sure they are stealth based, although each puts a lot of emphasis on stealth. The rest from the poll are good choices too, although I'm not a huge fan of Metal Gear. But Assassin's Creed, that is an action game, I don't remember any part of the series were I needed stealth.

Assassin's Creed really isn't a "stealth" game.

Splinter Cell was definitely the king of the stealth genre before Double Agent happened though.

Yes you feel like the ultimate badass if you actually complete assasins creec being stealthy. But I had to give my vote to splinter cell.

Haven't played many of those... but Thief trumps stealth I've seen in every other game so far.

Hitman because it was stealth where stealth was impossible. You hid directly in your targets sight.
Also, Assassin's Creed isn't a stealth game.

Thief has by far the best stealth mechanics and gameplay of that list in terms of shadows knives & cutthroat skull-drudgery. Stay in the shadows, out of sight. Plan your moves. Avoid the guards, don't draw attention to yourself! Killing is for amateurs, a true master of stealth is neither seen nor heard.

Thief is the only game that really embodies those. The only game you can complete without killing or violence. A 'true' stealth game.

Doesn't mean I think any of the other games are bad. I'm actually a big Hitman fan. But in terms of stealth gameplay and mechanics Thief is the clear winner here, no question.

In the old Splinter Cell games, except for required assassination targets or scripted events, you could make it through every level with no kills/violence.

As a matter of fact, the only way to get 100% in the old Splinter Cell games was to play and not get spotted, kill or knock anyone out (other than required targets) and complete every objective. It was known as "ghosting" the game, and it was damn hard, but damn fun.

I still remember when my friend and I finally ghost'd the UN Level in Chaos Theory on Hard. It was fucking epic.

Didn't we just have this thread a few days ago, with the exact same poll too?

OT: I'd say thief is the best stealth centred series. I'm not sure why people are saying Assassin's Creed - it's a fun game (I only know the first one since I have refused to buy any Ubisoft products at all since the announcement of the DRM on AC2), but it's by no means a stealth game.

You ask for series and yet GoldenEye is on there despite that being just one game?

My personal favorite is Siphon Filter simply because I don't know of any other game where you can do this:
