Hitman just barely beats out thief. Tenchu deserves an honorable mention. The last few splinter cell games have been pretty good too (the highlight being chaos theory for sure).

In the old Splinter Cell games, except for required assassination targets or scripted events, you could make it through every level with no kills/violence.

As a matter of fact, the only way to get 100% in the old Splinter Cell games was to play and not get spotted, kill or knock anyone out (other than required targets) and complete every objective. It was known as "ghosting" the game, and it was damn hard, but damn fun.

I still remember when my friend and I finally ghost'd the UN Level in Chaos Theory on Hard. It was fucking epic.
Ghosting means the same thing among the Thief community, which seeing as Thief came out before Splinter Cell, it wouldn't surprise me if the term carried over to Splinter Cell later on when it came out seeing as they're both stealth games.

And I know, I own Splinter Cell and was quite a fan when the first game came out (Though I haven't much followed the series since!). The big difference between Thief and Splinter Cell however is simply that the levels are much, much more open and free-form in the Thief series. A series renown for essentially dropping the player into an open map and saying 'here you go, have fun'. Whereas Splinter Cell is a much more scripted and linear thing. There's the occasional side-passage, to be sure, ad the player has some choice on how to proceed. But for the most part it's all a carefully timed series of events and encounters whereas Thief is just an open level for the player to explore and discover at their own will.

I much prefer Thief's take, and wish more games would follow its example. I also feel it better exemplifies the 'stealthy' spirit, allowing players to improvise and choose their own path, to carefully plan out strategies and approaches rather than simply following a pre-destined path.

Hitman series does the same it's worth noting, probably half the reason why of that list it's my second favourite. Assassins Creed as well, though I'm less of a fan of that particular game.

Aside from the Thief games, there are two great stealth games. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Hitman: Blood Money. Well worth playing, don't bother with Hitman itself (I recall a jungle level with an M-60 not very stealthy) and Splinter Cell went downhill when Ubisoft became convinced that stealth means shooting four guys in the face at the same time.

Thief was beautiful. So beautiful in fact that it ruined my ability to play other stealth games and have fun because I compared it them to thief so much. I'm sure others have done it decently but I just can't bring myself to touch the genre in any other form than Thief.

How the hell is Goldeneye a stealth game? There are a couple of slightly stealthy things, but nothing that would make it a stealth game.

The best is probably Thief, but my favourite is the Splinter Cell series, for four reasons.

1) Michael Ironside.
2) Awesome costume & gear.
3) Ridiculously badass gameplay.
4) Co-op! Stealth's an awesome genre for co-op, and Splinter Cell games are the only ones that do it!

Metal Gear
I wish I had a proper opinion. Though for some reason there seems to be a fence between Splinter Cell and Metal Gear and I cannot make myself climb over and give this one a proper try. No questions asked though, those be stealth games.

17.1% (12)
Splinter Cell
Cannot argue with this one. Splinter Cell was an excellent series of stealth games up to the point where Double Agent smashed it all to bits and pieces and left the title bleeding in the gutter. Conviction just casually walked by and gave it another kick for good measure, though at least it had a wonderfully entertaining Cooperative Campaign.

24.6% (17)
Thief
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... rise to victory, oh glorious object of my fangirl attention.
*coughs*
These games excel not only in the gameplay that defines stealth, but also in story telling and the masterful use of sound and voice. From all the ones on your list, Thief is the only one that has a coherent and well told background story to go with. In my opinion.

20% (14)
Assassin's Creed
WAIT WHAT?! Assassin's Creed is not a stealth game. How that even made it onto the list and then managed to outdo two ACTUAL stealth games is beyond me. There is no stealth in it. ZILCH. You run around in a fucking city dressed as a monk (or flamboyant Italian) with YOUR GEAR IN FUCKING PLAIN SIGHT and can hide from people by just casually walking past them. You don't use stealth, all you do is WALK (then stab them in the stomach).

Gah.

GAH!

<.< I have no opinion.

Hitman
>.> I wanted to like them. But it fell flat by the ability to dress up and---well, it just didn't feel like stealth to me. Though definitely more than Assassin's Creed.

11.8% (8)
Tenchu
Have no opinion.

Other
Batman, Arkham Asylum is more of a stealth game than Splinter Cell: Conviction and more so by miles than Assassin's Creed. Even Beyond Good and Evil has better stealth sections than these games and Metro 2033 needs to get a mention as well; You can play it as a stealth game and can actually ghost missions much like I am used to from Thief and the original 3 Splinter Cell games.

I could not agree any more. Though Thief still wins for me. I have a very soft spot for Mister Garrett.

I'm afraid I chose AssCreed. Sure its not great in terms of stealth but the game itself is much better than the other stealth games I've played (Splinter cell: Double Agent and Hitman: Blood Money). If the OP is calling AssCreed a stealth game then so be it.

Wait... there are good stealth games apart from Thief?

Huh. News to me.

On a somewhat related note, Assassin's Creed is not a stealth game. It's an action platformer.
Sorry but it does qualify as a stealth game, the objective is to ideally not be identified un till your job is done.

OT: You bastard for making me choose!
I love most of those listed there, I'll go with hitman simply because you can kill someone with a weapon you extract from a checken/cake, that is automaticly awsome.
One theng though, why no pizza boxes?
That'd be perfect to hide a gun/bomb inside.

Tenchu wrath of heaven (ps2) was a great game, I used to love playing that and having my mate come over and do the couple of multiplayer levels they stuck in it. Tenchu Z was also alright...such great concept having the online play and customising appearance but lack of funds make this game suffer. Would love for another game with a higher budget so that the 50 odd missions arent just 5-10 levels appearing multiple times just with different guard routes.

Damn, wish I had my ps2 to play wrath of heaven now...

Thief, probably the 3rd in the series was my favourite. The condition that you are neither a tank nor a ninja means that the importance of the stealth element was emphasised. It was also easy to sympathise with Garrett's plight.

was it a port or an original game? i'd love to play it again but I don't want to get a bloody xbrick to play it...

EDIT: HOLY CRAP ITS A PORT, MY LIFE IS COMPLETE AGAIN.

Well first off I think somebody needs to hit the op in the head for calling assassins creed a stealth game. That right there is an insult to stealth games.

1) Hitman
2) MGS
3) Splinter Cell

Never played thief so I cant comment on it. I heard it was good but I just havnt gotten around to even looking for it yet.
the first one was kinda but the sequels...

Metal Gear, Hitman and Splinter Cell are my favorite stealth genres. I voted Metal Gear because I prefer the story and you can be stealthy or guns blazing if you want too - your choice. I guess you can do that in Hitman too, but you risk failing a mission if you do cause sometimes target might flee.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is my favorite in the genre. Did co-op better than all the others that I have played. I'm looking to Skryrim's improved stealth mechanics.
