LAS VEGAS -- The next big game-machine war won't be fought over graphics or fancy controllers, says Valve founder Gabe Newell. Instead, victory will go to the hardware firm that helps connect software publishers with their customers.

Kicking off the 2009 DICE Summit Wednesday evening, Newell's keynote speech revolved around videogames as a service-based industry. Through its Steam game download platform for PC, Newell said, the company is able to monitor sales and user activity in real time -- leading to deep, broad insight about the performance of its games.

Newell values this more than anything, and believes that any game console maker who gives publishers such insight will garner the most developer support in the next round. "Consoles will succeed or fail to the degree to which they enable better customer/publisher relationships," he said. "It's a critical battleground among the various console holders."
I see this as Valve doing some early posturing for digital distribution of console games.
Not only would that make them gazillions of dollars,
it would make them gazillions of dollars.

They have the network, the bandwidth, the capital, and several years as the digital distribution leader.

You can download games via xbox live you know.
Yea, that and Valve makes me somewhat uncomfortable. Their general attitude towards Sony products kinda pisses me off. Oh, and Gabe Newell is a pig, at least I think so.

Ok.

1- What about Sony?
EDIT: Thanks Codgo.

2- Why is Gabe Newell a pig?

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all have their own digital distribution channels, and if Steam has or gains an advantage in terms of software features, it won't be hard for the console makers to copy.

What will be interesting to watch is whether enough people are willing to choose digital distribution over piracy to save the PC from low-developer-interest purgatory.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft would NEVER allow a third party publisher to set up a rival download system on their consoles.

Even less likely that they would allow the industry leader in Digital Distribution to do it.
